BOYS’ BASKETBALL Rampart 49, Rock Canyon 45At Rock Canyon: Max Cook scored 15 points to

lead Rampart over host Rock Canyon.Alex Hammelev scored 12 points and Ryan

Cook added 11 for the Rams. WRESTLING Rampart 35, Palmer 34At Rampart: Rampart jumped out to an early

lead and held on for a narrow victory. The Rams were assisted by three forfeit victories, as they jumped out to an early 24-12 lead.

Cameron Allen started things off for Rampart with a pinfall of Nick Benson 45 seconds into their match at 215 pounds. Clark Jones secured a victory with a 6-5 decision at 171 over Paul Manka. Jones capped a second period with a two-point reversal to secure the final margin.

“Clark is only a sophomore, but he is wres-tling really well,” Rampart coach Casey Bartels said. “There were a few times in the third period where Clark almost secured the pin, but Manka was able to fight him off.

“This was a good win for us, especially against a very good Palmer squad. The kids came out a little lethargic, but were able to pull it together for the victory.”

Palmer Ridge 43, Lewis-Palmer 23At Lewis-Palmer: Palmer Ridge picked up

major decisions at 125, 135 and 140 pounds en route to a 20-point victory.

Billy Farmer picked up the quickest pinfall victory for Palmer Ridge, just 44 seconds into the match at 160.

Lewis-Palmer picked up a pinfall victory at 130 by Nate Still, who secured his victory in 22 seconds. Palmer Ridge also had a point deducted from their team score for unsports-manlike conduct in that match.

TCA 38, Manitou Springs 30At Manitou Springs: Mason Haycock of TCA

helped set the tone of the match with a pinfall victory over Ryan Carpenter at 103 pounds. Haycock’s pin was one of five Titan pinfalls on the day.

Zach Dillon may have had the most impres-sive victory of the day, as he wrestled up at 171 pounds. Dillon picked up a technical fall 3:30 into the match. Dillon, who normally wrestles at 160, was filling in for an injured Daniel Register and lead 15-0 to bring on a technical fall over Nate Titcomb.

“Our wrestlers did a great job today, espe-cially Zach,” TCA coach Sean Collins said. “It’s

pretty special to be able to control a match that way. We knew that it was going to be a tough match because of the quality of wres-tlers that Manitou has.”

GIRLS’ SWIMMING Doherty 101, Discovery Canyon 85At Doherty: Caitlin Johnson and Sarah James

helped lead Doherty to a close victory over Discovery Canyon.

Johnson picked up individual victories in the 50 and 100 free, while James added victories in the 100 butterfly and backstroke. Both swim-mers were part of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

Discovery Canyon was led by Kelsey Oettinger who picked up a victory in the 500 free.

HOCKEY Air Academy 4, Coronado 1At Sertich Ice Center: Conor Henricks scored

43 seconds into the game as Air Academy jumped out early against Coronado. Henricks scored his second goal of the period to give the Kadets a 3-0 lead at intermission.

Dalton Adams scored for Coronado, off as-sists from Joey Garcia and Brock Lofgren.

Barry roars down the base-line into a trio of defenders.

He jumps into the middle of the crowd and pulls the ball high. The trio all reach for the ball, but Canyon fools them, yanking it down, floating under the rim and scoring on a reverse layup.

A few minutes later, Canyon steps to the line. Virtually every high school player shoots one-handed free throws, reaching high before releasing.

Canyon goes low, embrac-ing family tradition from the line. He grips the ball with both hands before gen-tly shooting underhanded.

“What the ...” shouts a Thomas Jefferson supporter as Barry prepares to shoot.

Yes, Canyon wants to de-velop his own basketball per-sonality, but he’s wise enough to follow the steps of his father. Rick sank 90 percent of his underhand free throws during his NBA career.

“Logic says that if one of the best free throw shooters of all time shot underhand-ed, why not try it?” Canyon asks. “It’s a great shot, a lot softer than an overhand shot. ... It’s the right shot for me.”

From the stands, Rick watches the layups and free throws with quiet intensity.

As a player, Rick attacked the game with distinctive rage, sharing opinions with teammates, coaches, oppo-nents and officials. He did not specialize in basketball diplomacy.

Mike Dunleavy, Barry’s teammate and friend, once summarized Barry’s person-ality.

“You could send him to the U.N. and he’d start World War III,” Dunleavy said.

As a basketball parent, Rick is silent man of peace. While watching games, he sits on the top row, scrib-bling suggestions for Can-yon in pencil. He does not utter one word to coaches or officials.

“I just watch,” Rick says. “I’m not a meddling parent.”

Belveal confirms this. Other parents offer advice, ask questions.

says. “He does that on purpose. And I appreciate it. Having an NBA Hall of Famer in your ear every day, that could be intimidating.”

And not only to a coach. The formula for a basket-ball catastrophe is there for father and son, too.

It was a conclusion that Rieck anticipated from the point he learned he would take the mat the last.

“Freshman year it came down to (team-mate) Nathan (Burak) and he pulled through,” Rieck said. “Last year it came down to Carter (McElhany) and he pulled through. I was expecting something simi-lar.”

Pine Creek opened a 22-6 lead, dominat-ing the lower weights to win five of the first six matches. But the Cougars clawed their way back, accumulating bonus points with four pins and two technical falls.

Sophomore Adrian Cordova, No. 1 at 112, scored a first period pin for the Cougars only points in the first six matches. Senior Justin Hays, ranked seventh at 140, No. 8 junior Trevor Powers (152), No. 2 senior Ethan Olson (171) followed Cordova’s lead.

Powers pinned Geoffrey Curtis in 58 sec-onds, igniting the crowd and setting off the decisive run for the Cougars.

“I’ve got to get a pin,” Powers said of this thought process entering his match. “It’s the most points, so I had to get it.”

embraced a gentle approach to teaching the game. They encouraged Canyon to pursue other interests, and he’s done so with gusto. He’s an A student, an Eagle Scout, a devoted musician and a state champion in tennis doubles. He hopes to become a doctor, a family tradition on his mother’s side.

Canyon has learned bas-ketball at his pace, not his parents’ pace.

“I tell him that it’s no big deal, just go out and have fun,” Rick says. “It’s up to him. I don’t ever make him go out and shoot and practice. If he does, I try to make myself available and give him insight and guid-ance, but it’s got to be up to him.”

Canyon confirms his

father’s words. He never encounters the fiery man who dominated NBA games in the ’60s and ’70s.

“He’s always encouraged me,” Canyon says. “He says, ‘Try to get better. Have fun.’”

Canyon smiles as he looks forward to the ride with his father to their home near The Broadmoor.

He knows his father will compliment him for hustle on defense and generosity on offense. He suspects dad also will mention he failed to drop his shooting shoul-der on jump shots.

The pressure on Canyon’s still-slim shoulders could be crushing, but it’s not. He’s surrounded by supporters, not critics.

“I’m blessed,” he says, “to come from a basketball family.”
