EAST JORDAN – It may be

but East Jordan senior Austen

Mellios is in mid season form as

he scattered three hits, struck out

four and walked three in game

one of a Lake Michigan Confer-

ence doubleheader against

Grayling on April 13.

Zach Shepard went deep to

pace the East Jordan offense,

while Skylar Gibson, Matt Bolser

and Jordan Harasewicz all sin-

gled.

“Classic pitchers dual, we

played excellent defense and

Austen (Mellios) kept the hitters

off balance by mixing his

pitches,” Red Devil coach Al Stal-

lard said. “Zach (Shepard) tied

the game with a home run in the

4th and also had a sacrifice bunt

in the seventh inning to move the

eventual winning run to third,

which would later score on a

passed ball.”

Game two had Harasewicz tak-

ing the loss, as he allowed eight

runs on three hits, fanned two

and walked three over three in-

nings. Only one Viking run was

earned.

Aaron Peck pitched the final

three innings in relief, allowing

two hits, striking our one and

walking one.

“We played good defensive

baseball for 12 of the 13 innings

Friday,” the coach said. “Unfortu-

nately in the second inning of

game two we committed 8 er-

rors,it was good to see us regroup

and settle back down after that,

the boys kept playing hard and

supported each other through

some adversity.”

Bolser pounded out three hits

including a double to lead the

Red Devils at the dish, while Gib-

son and Wyatt Werner added hits.

Bolser finished with two RBI in

the contest.

nings of relief, shutting down the

Hornets offense.

Mellios, Harasewicz and Peck

each finished with two hits in the

contest, while Skyler Gibson,

Shepard and Wyatt Werner all

singled.

“It was good to see us come

back after falling behind early in

the game,” East Jordan coach Al

Stallard said. “We turned a dou-

ble play in the 4th to end the in-

ning, and then ended the game

when Aaron Peck made a great

play to throw a hitter out at first

on a slow roller down the third

base line, and first basemen Zach

CHARLEVOIX – The Rayders

and really serve received well

against her opponent who had a

very strong serve.”

tally and really played through a

few mental toughness moments

to show she will prove herself to

have solid play through the sea-

son.”

In No. 4 singles Charlevoix’s

Paige Poirier defeated Grayling’s

Katrina Foguth, 6-3, 7-5.

The Retired & Senior

Volunteer Program

(RSVP) of Charlevoix &

Emmet Counties (a pro-

gram of Friendship

Centers of Emmet

County) will again

sponsor the AARP

Driver Safety Program,

to be held on Thursday

and Friday, May 3 and 4

from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

in the library of the

Petoskey Friendship

Center, 1322 Anderson

Road. The program is

aimed at drivers 50

years and older. The

class covers normal

age-related changes in

hearing, vision and re-

action time, and traffic

situations most chal-

lenging for seniors. A

number of driving

strategies are discussed

to address these issues.

The goal is to reduce

the risk of crashes, in-

juries and violations

and make seniors safer

drivers over a longer

period of time. Many

auto insurance compa-

nies reduce premium

rates for drivers that

have completed the

class.

The program con-

sists of two four-hour

classroom sessions.

Participants are tested

on their retention of

knowledge during the

class, but no record is

kept of results. The

cost for the two ses-

sions is $12.00 for AARP

members, and $14.00 for

non-members. Class

size is limited, and pre-

registration is re-

quired. Call the

Petoskey Friendship

Center at (231) 347-3211

or (888) 347-0369, ext. 29

to register.

AARP Driver Safety Program offeredat Petoskey Friendship Center

by brian Whitaker

The Centers for Disease Con-

trol report that over 60% of

Americans don’t get the recom-

mended amount of exercise, with

25% being almost completely

sedentary. With inactivity comes

a range of health problems, in-

cluding heart disease, osteoporo-

sis, and obesity. Many

Americans would like to get more

exercise, but don’t because they

are intimidated by workout cen-

ters, don’t know where to start, or

find it to be inconvenient. That’s

where home exercise equipment

can be helpful. Just fifteen min-

utes of exercise five days a week

can make an enormous differ-

ence in health and well being,

and most people are more likely

to exercise if they can do it at

home.

There are many types of home

exercise equipment out there.

Going to your local sporting

goods store can result in an over-

whelming variety of choices.

With each kind of equipment,

there are advantages and disad-

vantages. This article covers ex-

ercise equipment in several price

ranges and gives you some ideas

of what you ought to buy.

General RulesWhen buying exercise equip-

ment, you should think about cer-

tain things. Among these are:

Is the machine portable? Will it

be easy to move and store?

Is it well made? Does it seem

rickety? Are sharp edges covered

or smoothed?

Is it adjustable? Can you make

it easier or harder?

Aerobic ExercisersWhen people think about buy-

ing a home gym, they immedi-

ately think of aerobic exercise

equipment. Stationary bicycles,

treadmills, elliptical trainers, and

stair steppers all fall into this cat-

egory. These machines are good

for burning fat and improving

cardiovascular health. Aerobic

exercise is essential to fitness, so

if you’re only going to buy one

piece of equipment, an aerobic

machine is what you should buy.

ExErcisE BikEs. Almost

every American is familiar with

these. An exercise bike is great

for overall cardiovascular fitness,

tones the legs and buttocks, and

aids in losing weight. Many of

these also have some kind of

built-in exercise for the arms.

Exercise bikes come in a range of

prices, from $80 to $500.

TrEadmills. A treadmill lets

you walk or run inside your

home, with many models offering

incline adjustments (simulating

hills) and built-in programs to

keep your interest. There are

great fitness machines, but prob-

ably aren’t for people with degen-

erative bone or joint disease, as

they offer a relatively high im-

pact level. Treadmills are also

fairly expensive, ranging from

$399 to $2499 and more.

EllipTical TrainErs.

These are not as common as

bikes or treadmills, but offer a

great workout without the impact

of treadmills. Ellipticals offer a

motion more like cross-country

skiing or hiking, which helps re-

duce wear and tear on the joints.

Many also include some kind of

arm exercise. They range in

price from $399 to $999.

sTair sTEppErs. Most peo-

ple are fairly familiar with these

machines, which offer an exer-

cise that is similar to climbing a

flight of stairs. Arm exercises

aren’t usually an option with

these. Some of these are very in-

expensive, with prices as little as

$80, but stick with those that cost

$150 and up.

Weight / Resistance

MachinesMany people are afraid of

weight equipment, and it’s true

that free weights can be danger-

ous. But weight training is an es-

sential part of fitness. Resistance

machines offer a range of weight

and resistance exercises that

build muscle and improve en-

durance. Many people consider

buying some kind of multi-gym

or fitness machine for the home,

and that’s a good idea for some-

one who has the space to spare

and the money to spend. Prices

range from $399 to $900 and up.

To find out more, go to your

local sporting goods store or stop

by a department store. They usu-

ally have a good range of exercise

equipment. With a little money

and a little effort, you may find

yourself traveling the road to a

fitter, firmer you very soon.

Question & Answers AboutSelling Real Estate

Make spring cleaning less of

a chore by following these

smarter—and mostly

greener—tips for this annual

rite of homeownership.

parT 1 of 4

BathroomsWhen it’s time to get down

and dirty, many people start

with the bathroom. Allen

Rathey, founder of The House-

keeping Channel, says remov-

ing mineral deposits, rust,

and such from toilets doesn’t

have to mean chemical war-

fare. Don rubber gloves and

use a pumice stone to erase

stubborn stains. If you want

more scouring power, Rathey

recommends mixing baking

soda with acidic vinegar. The

concoction is just as effective

as conventional cleaners, and

there are no toxic fumes to in-

hale. This approach works

equally well on tub and

shower stains.

Buy your supplies in bulk to

save. A 64-ounce bottle of

vinegar costs about $4; a 12-

pound bag of baking soda,

about $7. Both items can be

used throughout the house.

For just $1 you can mix equal

parts vinegar and water in a

32-ounce spray bottle to make

a terrific all-purpose surface

cleaner. That’s about $4

cheaper than buying a spray

cleaner at the store.

Spring cleaning is the per-

fect time to extract dirt from

porous grouted surfaces. For

tile floors use your usual

cleaner, but don’t mop. In-

stead, run a wet/dry vac,

which will suck contaminants

out of the grout. Mopping

drives the grime into the

grout rather than removing it.

According to Rathey, grout

can harbor stinky bacteria

that leave a bad odor in the

bathroom. This technique is

more time-consuming than

mopping, but it’s worthwhile

to do at least once a year.

by Jim akans

“I can see for miles and miles

and miles” relates the lyric of a

classic rock song by the Who, and

it is an apt description of the ex-

traordinary panoramic views

offer from the hilltop setting of

this exceptional, custom designed

and built home near Boyne City.

From nearly every room in this

home, the outdoor vista’s stretch

for miles to the horizon, embrac-

ing lush, green northern terrain,

forests, and majestic views of

Lake Charlevoix.

The home has a two-level floor

plan, with approximately 3,400

total square feet of living space

divided between the main floor

and lower level walkout. The

amenities are all top notch; with

gorgeous hardwood flooring in

the main living, dining and

kitchen area, tongue and groove

wood wall and ceiling finishes

throughout most of the living

spaces, and solid wood 6-panel in-

terior doors.

The main living room features

a soaring cathedral ceiling and

huge window array framing the

outdoor views. Other amenities

include in-floor heating,

whirlpool bath, thermally effi-

cient wood sash windows, and

kitchen with stainless steel appli-

ances and a preparation island

with built-in cooktop.

And while this is certainly a

stunningly beautiful and meticu-

lously maintained home, the in-

credible outdoor setting beckons

from virtually every room. The

spectacular scenery surrounding

this home can also be enjoyed

from a pair of raised and open

decks off the main level, and

there is outdoor access to the

yard from the lower level. An-

other great feature of this home

is an attached three-car garage;

providing plenty of space for ve-

hicles as well as additional stor-

age.

This is a fabulous custom built

home on 2.26 acres of nicely land-

scaped property, plus miles upon

miles of extraordinary views. Lo-

cated at 1127 Crozier Crest near

Boyne City, this home is being of-

fered at $359,900.
