Antenna RequirementsIncludedwiththeSP-400isaflexiblerubberantenna(RubberDuck),whichmaybeusedforbothCOMMandNAVfrequencies.However,anexternalantennamaybeneededifoperatinginsideanaircraft(mustbeproperlyinstalledbyanaircraftradioshop),automobileorothermetalenclosure.
OntopoftheSP-400isaBNCconnector,whichisstandardforuse onaircraftradios.Therefore,littledifficultyshouldbeencounteredinconnectinganexistingaircraftradioantennatotheSP-400.
Whenusingtheflexibleantennainsideanaircraftorotherenclosure,theoptionalRemoteAntennaMountallowstheantennatobepositionedinasidewindoworotherfavorablelocationforimproved reception.TheSP-400canalsobepositionedinasidewindowor otherfavorablelocationusingtheoptionalSuctionCupTransceiverHolder.SeeAccessoriessectionofthismanualfortheseproducts.
BatteriesAnAlkalineBatteryPackisstandardequipmentwiththeSP-400.Alkalinebatteriesareagoodpowersourceforabackupradiobecausetheyhaveexcellentstoragelifeandnomaintenanceisrequired.Energizer®aretherecommendedAlkalinebatteryfortheSP-400.
TheAlkalineBatteryPackisNOTrechargeable.Thebatteriesmustbe replaced.Toreplacethebatteries,turnthepowerOFFandthenremove thebatterypackfromtheunitbypushingtheBatteryPackRelease Buttonin(seeControlssectionofthismanual)andslidingthebatterypackdown.Removethebatterycoverbypressingdownonthetabandgentlypullingitout.Eight1.5voltAAAlkalinebatteriesarerequired.
Replacethebatteriesbyfollowingthepositive(+)andnegative(-) terminalmarkingsinsidethecase.Whenthebatteriesarereplaced, replacethebatterycoverandattachthebatterypacktotheradio.
ToattachtheAlkalineorNiMHBatteryPack,makesurethepowerisOFFandthenalignthegroovesontheSP-400andbatterypack.Slidethebatterypackontotheradiountilitlocksinplace.

Manual Frequency Selection TheSP-400willreceive200NAVfrequencies(108.000MHzto117.950MHz)and3,000COMMfrequencies(118.000MHzto142.975MHz).TheSP-400willtransmiton2,280COMMfrequencies(118.000MHzto136.975MHz).ThefrequencycurrentlyselectedisalwaysdisplayedatthetopoftheSP-400’sscreenandthelastfrequencyisalwaysunderneaththecurrentfrequency.
Fromtheexampleabove,theSP-400isreceiving122.975MHzwiththelastfrequencybeing118.000MHz.Tomanuallyenteradesiredfrequencysuchas118.700MHz,enter118700usingthenumerickeypad.Aseachdigitisentered,theflashingcursormovestothenextdigit.Sixdigitsmayberequiredtoselectafrequency.
TheSP-400willreturntothepreviousfrequencyifthereisapauseoffivesecondsbetweenkeyentrieswhileenteringanewfrequency.TheClearKeymaybepressedanytimepriortoenteringthesixthdigittoclearthedigitsenteredandreturntothepreviousfrequency.
Anyfrequencyoutsideoftherangelistedabovewillnotbeaccepted.TheSP-400willbeepwhensuchadigitisentered.Forexample,startinganyfrequencyselectionwithanumberotherthan1orattemptingtoplacea5,6,7,8or9intheseconddigitwillresult inabeep.

Frequency Search Tomanuallysearchthroughthefrequencyrange(COMMandNAV),theUpKeyorDownKeymaybepressedatanytimetoselectthenexthigherorlowerfrequency.Thisuses8.33KHzstepsintheCOMM frequencyrange.TheUpandDownKeysmaybepressedrepeatedly tocontinuechangingtheselectedfrequency.
ToautomaticallysearchtheentireCOMMfrequencyrangefora broadcastingsignal,theUpKeyorDownKeymaybepressedand heldforonesecond.TheScreenwilldisplaySEARCHasseenbelow.
Thefrequencieswilleitherscrollupordownin8.33KHzstepsdependinguponwhethertheUporDownKeywasusedtoinitiatetheSearch.
Whenabroadcastingsignalisfound,thewordSEARCHwillflashandtheSP-400willstoptemporarilyonthatfrequency.Ifthebroadcastingsignaliscutoffformorethantwoseconds,theSearchwillresumeuntilanothersignalisfound.When142.975MHzisreachedduringan upwardSearch,theSearchautomaticallycontinuesat118.000MHz.Likewise,when118.000MHzisreachedduringadownwardSearch,theSearchautomaticallycontinuesat142.975MHz.
TheSearchmaybecanceledatanytimebypressingtheClearKey. ThedirectionoftheSearchmayalsobereversedatanytimeby pressingandholdingtheUpandDownKey(whicheverisappropriate)foronesecond.
ItisveryimportantthattheSquelchbeproperlyadjustedpriorto initiatingaSearch.Thebackgroundstaticreceivedwiththesquelch offmaybestrongenoughtodisruptaSearch.IfaSearchgets“stuck” onafrequencywithtoomuchbackgroundnoise,increasetheSquelchorpressandholdtheUporDownKeyforonesecondtoskipthat frequencyandresumeSearching.

Frequency Memory TheSP-400has20visualmemorychannelsnumbered00to19tostorethosefrequenciesusedmostoften.Thesechannelsarestoredingroupsoffiveonfourseparatepages.ThesememorychannelsmaybeusedtostoreCOMM,NAVandWXfrequencies.
Selectadesiredfrequency,suchas122.700,tobestoredbyusingeithermanualfrequencyselectionorfrequencysearch.Tostorethisfrequency,presstheMemoryKey.Thefollowingscreenwillappear.
Thefirstavailablememorychannelwillbedisplayedwithanarrowonthescreen.Inthisexample,memorychannel01isthefirstavailable location.Tostorethefrequency,presstheMemoryKeyasecondtime.Thescreenwillnowdisplaythefollowingforonesecondtoverify122.700hasbeenstoredinmemorychannel01.

Youmayalsooverwriteanexistingmemorychannelorselectan availablememorychannelotherthanthefirstonedisplayed.Onceagain,selectthedesiredfrequencyandthenpresstheMemoryKey.
Thefirstavailablememorychannelwillbedisplayedwithanarrowonthescreen.NowpresseithertheUporDownKeytoscrollthroughthe20memorychannels.Ifamemorychannelisalreadystoringafrequency,thestoredfrequencywillbedisplayednexttothememorychannelnumberonthescreenwhileyourselectedfrequencyremains onthetopline.
Oncethedesiredmemorychannelisselected,presstheMemoryKeyandthefrequencywillbestored.Remember,ifachannelwasselectedthatwasalreadystoringafrequency,theoldfrequencywillbeerasedwhenyourselectedfrequencyisstored.
YoumayexitthememoryfunctionbypressingtheClearKeyany timepriortostoringthefrequency(pressingtheMemoryKeythe secondtime).

Memory Recall Torecallafrequencystoredinamemorychannel,presstheRecallKey.Thefirstfivememorychannelnumbersandtheircorrespondingfrequencieswillbedisplayed.ThefirststoredmemorychannelimmediatelybecomestheactivefrequencyandisreceivedbytheSP-400.
Inthisexample,memorychannel00islistedfirst.
AtthispointyoumayselectanystoredmemorychannelbyeitherpressingtheUporDownKeytoscrollthroughthestoredfrequencies.MemorychannelsstoredonotherpagesmayalsobeaccesseddirectlybyusingtheNumericKeypad.Forexample,toreceivememorychannel08youmayeither:
1. Press the Recall Key followed by the Up or Down Key to scroll to 08
Or 2. Press the Recall Key followed by 0 8
OnceintheRecallfunction,theSP-400staysinRecalluntiltheClearKeyispressed.Thisallowsyoutosequenceyourfrequenciesintheorderyoumaywishtousethem.Forexample,youmaywishtostoreyourairport’sATISinmemorychannel00,ClearanceDeliveryinchannel01,Groundinchannel02,Towerinchannel03andDepartureControlinchannel04.ForthisexampleyouwouldpresstheRecallKeyoncefollowedbytheDownKeyforeveryfrequencychangeinsteadofhavingtoentereachfrequencymanually.
WhileintheRecallfunctiontheonlyentriesacceptedareNumericKeypadentriesbetween00and19,theUporDownKeyortheClearKey.AllotherinputscausetheSP-400tobeep.Remember,youmaypresstheClearKeyatanytimetoexittheRecallfunction.OnceyouhavelefttheRecallfunction,theSP-400willremainonthelastfrequencythatwasbeingreceived.

Memory Scan TheMemoryScanfunctionisverysimilartotheSearchfunction, exceptitonlyscansthoseCOMMfrequenciesstoredinthememorychannels.ToScanthememorychannels,presstheRecallKeytoentertheRecallfunction.ThenpressandholdtheUporDownKeyforonesecondtoinitiateeitheranupwardordownwardScan.ThewordSCANwillappearonthescreenandthememorychannelnumber andfrequencywillbedisplayedonthetoplineofthescreen.
Whenabroadcastingsignalisfound,thewordSCANwillflashand theSP-400willstoptemporarilyonthatfrequency.Ifthebroadcastingsignaliscutoffformorethantwoseconds,theScanwillresumeuntilanothersignalisfound.
