42 Journal of Community Nursing May/June 2013, volume 27, issue 3 Spot Light New Drug Tariff pricing for Biatain ® Super Biatain ® Super has new Drug Tariff pricing that comes into effect on May 1st 2013 and represents a 20-37% price reduction across the range. Biatain Super, formerly known as Alione ® is a super absorbent dressing for use on highly exuding wounds. The hydrocapillary pad contains super absorbent particles, which rapidly absorb and lock exudate away from the wound bed and surrounding skin. The semi permeable top film allows evaporation, which increases the overall capacity of the dressing. Biatain Super also includes a non-adherent wound contact layer minimising trauma on dressing removal making it the ideal all in one dressing for highly exuding wounds. www.coloplast.com You take care of your patients, let ActivHeal ® take care of cost Advanced Medical Solutions have announced a new edition to their wound care range, ActivHeal ® Foam Contact. The new polyurethane foam dressing has a multi layer design that provides a number of clinically effective properties. ActivHeal ® Foam Contact has been developed to offer excellent absorption properties alongside security and protection on moderate to heavily exuding chronic and acute wounds. The perforated wound contact layer minimises trauma during dressing changes, whilst the continuous adhesive coverage securely positions the dressing in place. This reduces the risk of leakage whilst the foam pad provides increased fluid handling when required - a combination that will give confidence to the clinician and the patient. www.foamcontact.com sorbion sana – prices reduced by 60%! sorbion sana combines a unique 3D wound contact layer (WCL) and Hydration Response Technology fluid management properties. sorbion sana is indicated as a primary dressing for low to highly exuding wounds of varying aetiologies, provides tissue protection, is dual sided for easy application and is hypoallergenic, making it an ideal dressing for all patients. sorbion sana provides upto 7 days wear time and saves up to 54% in cost compared to combinations of WCLs and absorbent dressings. sorbion sana has long been recognised as an outstanding dressing, but high prices have meant many PCT’s have not been able to afford it. In response to market demand, and due to reduced manufacturing costs, the prices are being slashed by over 60% on Drug Tariff effective May 1 st . sorbion sana is now a viable alternative to foam and hydrofibre dressings for the first time and allows the NHS to reduce costs. At these prices why use anything else? I t's good to know that Granny'sadvice has now been scientificallycorroborated. A team of researchers

in New Zealand explored a novelapproach to preventing winter falls.Study part ic ipants wore socks(of different colours) over theirshoes while walking down a slipperyfootpath. Self-reported levels of s l ipperyness were an outcomemeasure. Traction was improved by the wearing of socks over shoes, although an improperly applied sockwas the cause of one fall, and onemember of the control group alsoslipped. This doesn't alter the fact thatwearing socks over shoes is terminallyuncool. For the full story, go tohttp://journal.nzma.org.nz/journal/122-1298/3683/

A company in New York hasdeveloped something verytechnical and clever which

means that keys may be a thing of thepast. Apparently, you can downloadan app that will let you open the door at the touch of a button on your phone. And it doesn’t matterwhere in the world you are as you canallow others access. Just think howhandy that will be when you gethome after a run of 7 nights andrealise you have the ward keys inyour pocket…

A pparently birdsong facilitatesa myriad of things, not justinterest from another bird.

At Alder Hey Children's Hospital, birdsong is played while injectionsand other treatments are given. It's also been shown to negate thepost-lunch slump, although giventhat many of you never get a lunchbreak, that's hardly likely to help youunfortunately.

A ccording to the Daily Tele-graph (working with cancerResearch UK), those of us over

the age of 50 should be embracing'the second half of our life'. Goodgrief! Really? the second half? Surelythat starts at about 35-38, or do theyknow something we don't?

Idon’t know about you, but working in acall centre would not be on my bucketlist. Having to deal with on the whole,

very irate customers without being Scot-tish would be just too much (apparently, the Scottish accent is the most trusted andreassuring in call centres…). However, Imay change my mind. A Wrexhamcompany asked staff if they wished towork night shifts to cover workload.Naturally, only a few volunteered, and thecompany was aware of the detrimentaleffects of night working. So, some cleverbod came up with the idea of sendingsome of its staff to New Zealand to work. While we are tucked up asleep, NZ isalready 12 hours into the future, so theselucky staff are ensuring a continuousservice in the UK. Now, where do I apply?

Isuspect that this will be the mostwanted kitten in the world – the little 5-week old mite that was covered in

petrol and set on fire. Not only does ithave burns all across its body, but it hasalso lost its ears. Bet you can’t look at thiswithout going aahhhh (and of course, wanting to do commit acts of harm tothose that did this).
