We are wrapping up our Fitness Challenge, below are the challenges the kids will do this month and part of next month: *Run/Walk: 1st grade = 1/4 mile run/walk
2nd grade = 1/2 mile run/walk
3rd grade = 3/4 mile run/walk
4th grade = 1 mile run/walk
*Arm Hang/Sit and Reach
*Plank hold
The kids have really enjoyed these challenges and I have been so proud of all of them, they have tried their best!!!
The health topic for the month is sleep. Every child between 5-12 years old should be getting 10-11 hours a night, is your child getting this amount?
I have a “Family Fitness” board outside the gym, check it out the next time you’re here. I have told the kids to send me a picture of them doing something active. Take a picture and send it my way so I can put their picture on the board. It can be anything active from climbing a tree, riding a bike or walking their dog, the list goes on!!
I hope you enjoyed “Take Your Parent to PE Week.” It was so much fun for the kids to have their parents come join them in all our fun activities. I hope you can continue to be active with your child!!
From the Music Room I enjoyed meeting many parents and younger siblings at Meet the
Teacher Night. If you were unable to visit, feel free to stop by anytime. Many parents asked about our music goals for students at Carey
Ridge. Our music curriculum is based on the State and National Standards for Music Education. These include nine area for grades K-4: vocal per-formance, instrumental performance, reading music, improvisation, compo-sition, analyzing, evaluating, and understanding music in relationship to other disciplines, and other cultures. All of the activities in music class are designed to help your students grow in these areas as well as develop a love for music. Parents can find more details about the music curriculum by visiting the Indiana Department of Education at https://learningconnection.doe.in.gov/Standards/About.aspx?art=11.

ning at each turn. Why should we be any different?”

Welcome to ART! The art room is a remarkable place where students hone a variety of
skills to produce amazing works. My goal is to provide learning experiences for students
that offer a balance of technical skills, meaningful thinking and creativity. This month, I
am excited to introduce abstract art to the curriculum. According Tate, abstract art is
“artworks that do not attempt a recognizable reality but instead use shapes, colors,
forms, and textures to achieve their effect.” http://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/a/
abstract-art
What better way to celebrate Dot Day than in the art room while making these connec-
tions! The art students will learn how to create abstract compositions using geometric
shapes and color characterized by monochromatic color schemes; leading them to the
conclusion that form and color alone may have a powerful effect. Each grade level will
combine different media, techniques and processes to communicate their individual ab-
stract ideas.
About Dot Day
Celebrate Creativity, Courage & Collaboration
International Dot Day, a global celebration of creativity, courage and collaboration. The
Dot Day has gone on to inspire countless children and adults around the globe.
Make Your Mark
In honor of International Dot Day, the Carey Ridge Elementary art students will celebrate,
design and create their own abstract dot artwork using geometry and color to make
their “mark”.
Get ready to make your mark on International Dot Day.
Happy Creating...and Dot Making!
Respectfully,
Katie Collier

This month one of our focus has been International Dot Day! Dot Day is celebrated on September 15th. International Dot Day is named for the classic Peter H. Reynolds storybook, The Dot. Ask your child about the book! Some of the activities included:
Kindergarten: Creating a picture from one black dot after the poem, “The Magic Dot”.
First Grade: We designed our own dots and got to see them come alive (3D) using the app, Quiver. It is a free app. For more info, visit http://www.quivervision.com/
Second Grade: After hearing The Dot, students wrote how they could “make their mark.” We are taking our writings and “smashing apps” now. Student are designing a dot in Doodle Buddy and then taking it into ChatterKid recording how they can make their mark!
Third Grade: We took another book that is full of dots, Press Here, by Herve Tullet. Students have been creating a class book full of adventures focusing on writing and illustrating on cause and ef-fects scenarios for their dots.
Fourth Grade: We tried something new, a Breakout Edu game! In Breakout EDU games, players work collaboratively to solve a series of critical thinking puzzles in order to open a locked box. It in-volves active learning, the Four C's --critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and communication, and cultivating grit. This past rotation, the students had to solve, The Dot: Make Your Mark! puzzle. It was so fun watching them work together, listening to new ideas on how to interpret the clues given, and to see them not giving up.
