Spring 1 Week 5 – 8th February 2019 What have we been learning? This week we have been learning the last of our digraphs and trigraphs - we have learnt so many and done so well! We have looked at air , ure and er and we decorated ging erbread men for er. We have been practising writing all of these sounds too! We have been learning all about the Chinese New Year festival this week. We listened to the story of how twelve animals had a race to see which order the years would be named after them. We showed that we were good at remembering the story because we each wrote a sentence about it afterwards. We have also decorated paper plates in the Willow Patternstyle, made Chinese New Year cards, coloured in Chinese dragons, painted paper plate pigs and decorated biscuits in the shape of a pigs face (for the Year of the Pig), coloured in Chinese Lions on the PCs and tried eating with chopsticks - the last one was lots of fun but quite tricky! In Maths we have been adding the spots on dominoes and writing number sentences to match using ‘+’ and ‘=‘ symbols. Mrs Short made it harder for us by making us add the spots on two dominoes! We are getting really good at remembering how to write the number to 20 that we need. Homework Literacy - Sounds - especially new sounds air, ure and er, and practise correct formation of letters. - Reading books - Please remember to write a comment in the Reading Diary each week, thank you. - Sight words. Maths - Practise adding using small amounts of objects, counting on to find the total amount, and reinforce the language of add”, “total”, “altogether”. Understanding the World - Ask your child to draw a Chinese New Year picture. Can they recall something that they have learned about this festival? Please can you write what your child tells you next to their picture, or ask them to have a go at writing a simple label. Wed love to see what theyve remembered! Chinese New Year activities... Spring 1 Week 5 – 8th February 2019

What have we been learning?

This week we have been learning the last of our digraphs and trigraphs - we have learnt so many and done so well! We have looked at air, ure and er and we decorated gingerbread men for er. We have been practising writing all

of these sounds too!

We have been learning all about the Chinese New Year festival this week. We listened to the story of how twelve animals had a race to see which order the years would be named after them. We showed that we were good at

remembering the story because we each wrote a sentence about it afterwards. We have also decorated paper plates in the “Willow Pattern” style, made Chinese New Year cards, coloured in Chinese dragons, painted paper plate pigs and decorated biscuits in the shape of a pig’s face (for the Year of the Pig), coloured in Chinese Lions on the PCs and tried eating with chopsticks - the last one was lots of fun but quite tricky!

Maths - Practise adding using small amounts of objects, counting on to find the total amount, and reinforce the language of “add”, “total”, “altogether”. Understanding the World - Ask your child to draw a Chinese New Year picture. Can they recall something that they have learned about this festival? Please can you write what your child tells you next to their picture, or ask them to have a go at writing a simple label. We’d love to see what they’ve remembered!

Chinese New Year activities...

Safer Internet Day

On Tuesday it was “Safer Internet Day”. We talked about how to be safe when we are using the Internet as we read the story “Smartie the Penguin” and we found out how he learnt to keep safe when using the Internet too. We learnt a little rhyme to help us to remember - “Before you click, click, click, you need to think, think, think and TELL SOMEONE!”.
