Medical AlertThe Humane Society receives in many injured dogs and cats throughout the year and with the help of the Bill Michael’s Medical Rescue Fund, we are able to help these animals receive the care they need before finding their new homes. The Medical Alert page was created as an extension of this fund to highlight a particular animal through its journey up until adoption. We hope to educate the public with videos, photographs and information.

Our first Medical Alert, a 1 year old Australian Cattle Dog named Bo, came to the Humane Society as a stray with a leg injury. Because of his energy and loving personality, we are certain that he will be a great companion. His leg injury kept him in pain so a much needed surgery was performed.

Dachshunds RescueIn December 2009, the Humane Society of San Antonio loaned over 40 wire cages to Bandera Animal Control to temporarily shelter Dachshunds after a puppy mill seizure. Twelve Dachshunds were transferred to the Humane Society to be available for adoption and are now living with their new families.

For many people, companion animals are important members of their household. However, most animal owners have no plans for the care of their beloved companions in the event of the owner’s death. With that in mind, the Humane Society of San Antonio recently developed a Pet Guardianship Program.

We ensure that their pet will come into the loving care of the Humane Society of San Antonio where we will take full responsibility for finding him/her a loving home to live out their life.

The agreement for each animal can be established by bequest through a will or trust, with an insurance policy, or can be paid in full at the time of enrollment.

Success Story - ChimichangaMy boyfriend and I adopted “Tammy,” a Basset Hound/ Labrador mix from the Humane Society of San Antonio this past June. When we saw her for the first time we started to laugh because she looked so silly and had never seen a dog that looked like her before- the body of a Basset Hound with short little legs and the colors and features of a Labrador.

We knew that she was going to be our life long companion from the moment we first met her. We had to wait for a month before we took her home because she was heart worm positive, so we would come every weekend to visit with her and see how she was doing. Now she has spent 7 months in our home with us and we couldn’t be happier. She brings so much joy and happiness into our lives and loves to play and

cuddle. We were quickly able to teach her the basic tricks like sit, shake, lay down and roll over. Now when we ask her to sit she does all of the other tricks one after another so she can get her treat faster. She’s a smart dog. Her new name is now Chimi “Sunshine” Changa Lilly Ramilly, or Chimichanga for short. We wanted to pick a name that made us laugh as much as she does. She’s one spoiled doggy. Attached is a picture of her going boogy boarding at the beach.

El Rey Fido 2010! All you and your dog have to do is raise money for the orphaned pets at the Humane Society of San Antonio.

If your dog raises the most he/she will be crowned El Rey Fido VIII. The next 5 highest fundraisers will become part of the Royal Court that will reign for one year with El Rey Fido VIII and serve as dog ambassadors for the Humane Society of San Antonio.

Go to our website www.sahumane.org and start raising money for this event. Deadline is Thursday, April 1st. Coronation takes place on Saturday April 10th at Grand Hyatt San Antonio.
