M ike Heck has been fly fishing the beloved Cumberland Valley

streams since boyhood. Childhood fishing years would be spent on the Falling Springs, where one could get an ice cream from Frey’s Dairy for a quarter and then back to fishing.

Once Mike got his PA drivers license it

was “game on”. Days out of school would be spent on the many great spring creeks in the area. He was blessed to have been able to learn the art of fly fishing on some of the hard-est and most famous spring creeks in the country, which he has been doing so for over thirty years. Mike’s articles have appeared in Fly Fisherman, American Angler and Fish and Fly Magazine. He has also appeared on the TV show, “Road Trip USA”, on the Discovery channel that aired across Europe.

Currently, Mike operates an Orvis Endorsed profes-sional guide service for the Falling Springs, Letort, Yellow Breeches and many other South Central PA trout streams.

When not on the stream, Mike can be found up at his camp taking in the great outdoors. Along with fly fishing, he is an avid hunter of both big and small game. Mike is married to his lovely wife, Shelley, and has two children Breanne and son Fisher. You can find Mike Heck’s Trout Guides on the web at www.fallingsprings.com.

So come out the TROUT SHOW on March 14th and meet Mike and get ready for the upcoming fishing season. You don’t want to miss this one!

H appy New Year! Yes, it is mid-February but the first newsletter of the new year so still appropri-

ate. This is also a good time to remind all that a new PA fishing license and trout stamp are in order. PA Fish and Boat has launched 3- and 5-year fishing li-censes (and extra permit stamps) in addition to the usual single year resident and non-resident licenses. There is a bit of a discount for multi-year; I wonder if the print from an ink jet printer will last that long…

The important news to pass along is to remind you all to save Thursday, March 14, for the TROUT SHOW! Mike Heck is the speaker as we are again at Valley Forge Middle School. Mike’s presentation will cover south central PA spring creeks, techniques and tactics. Mike will be available to sign copies of his book Spring Creek Strategies. We will have copies for sale. Come out and get ready for the trout season opening.

At the last board meeting I asked for someone to be out in front on VFTUs Veterans Service Program (VSP). Close to me and under the hubbub of “discussion” I received a quiet “I will” from Chuck Cutshall. Chuck is just like that and always has tons of ideas. I am de-lighted to have him volunteer! The first thing he did for this project was to immediately sign-up for and par-ticipate in a Saturday Project Healing Waters training session. Thanks Chuck! Yes, I will read your debrief email very soon…

Victory Night

VFTUs big event this last quarter was a night of social-izing at Victory Brewing in Downingtown in place of the January general meeting. A few more than 70 people attended including the President and Vice President of Tulpehocken TU, Bill Eggleston and Jeff Schronce; Christine Sharbaugh and fiancé from Sporting Gentle-man; professional fly fishing guide and fly tyer, Mary Kuss; and Kate Jensen and several interns from Valley Forge National Historical Park. It was delightful to have non-members join us for great night of friends, pizza and beer.

Special guest of the evening was Miguel Hernandez, Com-mander of Downingtown VFW. Miguel attended on behalf of the VFW post to present VFTU with a check for $3,000 as seed money to help fund fly tying and fly fishing activities for our Veterans Service Pro-gram. The Post has also gen-erously offered their location as a meeting place for the pro-gram. One of Jim Clark’s ma-jor concerns has been securing a facility where meeting and teaching could be done; this is a huge opportunity for the program. Thank you Down-ingtown VFW and Tom Ames for suggesting the Post’s involvement!

PATU held the first leadership conference call on Janu-ary 17. The strategic plan has been updated and is available at http://patrout.org/docs/documents/strategic-plan_2013.pdf?sfvrsn=0 State Council has a number of items to be implemented in 2013 so take a look.

The Fall Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Shavers Creek Fire Hall and Community Center - 8 miles from the Little Juniata and south east of State College. It will be a one day event. No lodging will be provided.

A Trout in the Classroom (TIC) Program Partner re-fresher course will be in June. This event will be for any current program partner. There will be discussion of ways the program can benefit the chapter, ways to become active in TIC and share experiences. The Trout in the Classroom Start-up and Existing Grants will be available February 1, at http://w w w . p a t r o u t i n t h e c l a s s r o o m . o r g / F u n d i n g /PATUGrants.aspx.

T he PA Turnpike’s Slip Ramps at Route 29 opened for business in December, and I have used them

once and should have used them last Saturday night but forgot they were there. I have heard from a friend who lives on Route 401 north of Route 202 that he has observed a decrease in traffic there. The ulti-mate impact of the slip ramps will be determined in the future.

The PA Turnpike Widening Project (MP 320 – 326) continues to move along at a pace that is hard to de-termine. We have requested to be kept in the loop, but as of this writing I am not feeling the love. Each question gets a minimal re-sponse that leads to more questions that need to be followed up to get a re-sponse. One good bit of re-cently received information is that national Trout Unlimited has given us conditional ap-proval to appeal the Turn-pike’s NPDES permit if we feel that it inadequately protects Valley Creek.

Atwater Update

The Atwater Development is really ramping up. With the near completion of the Shire (specialty biophar-maceutical company) corporate headquarters, the in-creased activity on the development of the south side of Atwater Lake for the Endo headquarters

(healthcare solutions company), and the ancillary amenities of trails and open space linking with the Open Land Conservancy preserves and their network of trails, it is a busy place these days.

There were a flurry of phone calls and emails a while ago over the treeless flood plain of Valley Creek in Chester-brook. It turns out

that this was right-of-way clearing for Tredyffrin to get to their sanitary sewer lines. They do need ac-cess on short notice, especially with those lines get-ting older and less secure. However, the over-wide clearing was noted and discussed with the township’s Director of Public Works, Scott Cannon. This tree cut-ting made poignant a recent article sent to me from the magazine of the International Society of Arboricul-ture. Here are the highlights that I extracted. “Tree Canada recently celebrated its 20th Anniversary in conjunction with the 10th National Canadian Urban

Forest Conference. Tree Canada has arranged for the planting of 78 million trees in 20 years!” In Canada! From what I have seen of Canada it is covered with trees. Any-way, moving on…. The arti-cle spoke of people at the conference understanding and using the term urban forest. The article’s author went on to say that he was

“pleasantly surprised to hear from multiple planners, mayors, council members, and even a former Pre-mier, that trees are part of their city’s infrastructure.”

Crabby Project

An expanded Crabby Creek project is still on the burner as we try to cobble together enough money from multiple sources to push it forward. Chotty Sprenkle of the Chester County Conservation District is seeking a lead on some funding (not the usual play-ers). Owen Owens set up a creek side meeting with Kurt Imhoff , Senator Bob Casey’s Regional Represen-tative to see if there might be a federal source or two for funding the project. As we stood on top of where the old access road was and looked over the canyon, a huge backhoe was pushing trees out of the right-of-way for the new sewer line on the far side of the hill, and a fox, hunting in the grass through the light snow. trotted into view. It is still a gorgeous place even with all of the insults it has had to endure. Kurt said that he would see what he could find in the way of funding.

As noted above, Tredyffrin Township is moving for-ward with their sanitary sewer project that parallels Crabby Creek. The work so far has been clearing

RIVERS CONSERVATION CAMP

June 16-21, 2013

for boys and girls ages 14 to 17 (born between June 21, 1995 and June 16, 1999)

Hosted by the Cumberland Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited & held at the Allenberry Resort on the Yellow Breeches

in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania Applications are being accepted until March 31, 2013

Some points about the camp: No student will be turned away because of financial need

Cost is only $350 for the entire week and is all inclusive

Students stay at the Allenberry Resort with 2 students per room

Fly fishing and fly tying equipment is available for loan to the students

There are no tests and this is not a pass/fail situation like a class in school

Students will complete an in-stream habitat project. It will be a lasting reminder of what they accomplished.

The highly structured curriculum is based on college level classes. Students are instructed in ecology, aquatic biology, geology, hydro-geology, erosion and sedimentation control, ichthyology, riparian corridor protection, watershed management, entomology and much more. Students also participate in a hands-on stream habitat improvement project.

Fly fishing and fly tying are also included. Nationally known instructors teach the students fly casting, fly tying, stream etiquette, how to “read” the water, and of course there is fishing. The camp begins on Sunday and ends the following Friday

The camp will be limited to 32 selected qualified students, ages 14 to 17. The applicants must have been born between June 21, 1995 and June 16, 1999.

The Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp was founded in 1995 through the efforts of the late Dr. John R. “Jack” Beck and the late Enoch S. “Inky” Moore, Jr., Pennsylvania Fish Commissioner. Their goal was to select thirty-two teenagers each year who are the leaders in their class. The thought is that today’s leaders in high school become the leader of tomorrow’s communities.

For more information or an application brochure contact the camp at: Rivers Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp

PO Box 71 Boiling Springs, PA 17007

or visit the camp’s website at www.riverscamp.com.

(more trees lost in our urban watershed) and minor grading with some erosion and sedimentation controls installed. We will be keeping an eye on this work.

What’s Hot!

Detention Basin retrofits are hot. The Chester County Conservation District grant with the Valley Creek Trus-tee Council is now completed. Five sites were identi-fied to look at for improvements in the management of stormwater. Of the five sites, one was found un-suitable but among the others, six basins were identi-fied to be professionally assessed. After the basins, drainage areas, and other conditions were considered, a concept plan was produced with the goal of enhanc-ing the basin’s functionality. With concept plans in hand, these owners can now move forward to repair a n d / o r r e d e s i g n t h e i r b a s i n s . Green Valleys Association— now Green Valleys Water-shed Association— submitted an application for a Growing Greener grant to survey the detention basins in the Valley Creek watershed and determine which are suitable for vegetated retrofits. Some of the work is ongoing even without the grant funding. The map-ping and ground truthing will create baseline informa-tion. The Chapter is involved in this work with GVWA. The grant seeks to retrofit 10 – 12 basins which may include some of those identified in the Trustee Council grant mentioned above. The Growing Greener appli-cation was for about $240,000.

Earth Day in Chesterbrook : Mark your calendars– it will be on Saturday, April 20th in Wilson Farm Park. This will also be the day we do our annual stream cleanup in the Valley Creek Watershed. There are a lot of things in the planning stages at this point, so stay tuned as details shake out. Our very good friend Bill Bellew has taken this bull by the horns and is orga-nizing a wonderful event. Please reserve the day to celebrate Earth Day and our watershed.

In late May or June we will hold a volunteer work day for planting the two demonstration rain gardens in Wilson Farm Park. These gardens are a long time coming. Jim Nelson signed the grant documents when he was chapter president. Tredyffrin Township’s Pub-lic works will be providing labor, equipment, and com-post for the project. We have provided the profes-sional designs, will do the planting, and will provide maintenance for three years. We will also provide signage to educate park users as to the benefits of rain gardens.

The Williams/Transco gas pipeline crossing of the East Branch of the Brandywine Creek is a project that should have never been permitted using the coffer dam, dry cut method. This was allowed only by a 180 degree reversal of a prior DEP permit. The prior per-mit said the crossing needed to be done using Hori-zontal Directional Drilling or similar method. We are cobbling together a group of individuals from various organizations to monitor the work and be the con-science of the project. This won’t be the last gas line to come through our backyard, but it will be the last where we were not prepared for its arrival. If you are interested in being a part of this effort contact Pete Goodman or Jeff Bush (contact info. inside the back cover of BANKNOTES.)

Joining the Coalition

The Chapter has sent in their application to join the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed. It was formed to raise awareness of the Watershed’s remark-able resources, provide a mechanism for collaborative and coordinated advocacy, and foster accountability of those charged with protecting and managing the Dela-ware River and its tributaries, from the headwaters to the Bay. By coordinating communications, messages, and actions across organizations, the Coalition for the Delaware River Watershed is able to focus attention on the shared priorities of its members. Early partners include local, regional, and national organizations such

the amount of $3000. The current commander, Mi-guel Hernandez, presented us with a check at our so-cial night at Victory Brewing on Jan. 10. Even better, in my opinion, is that we can use their banquet facil-ity, free of charge, to hold our get togethers for the project. Cool, huh?

Enthusiastic Start

Next, another volunteer, Jay Breneman, has been talking to folks at the Coatesville VA, and tells me that they are very enthusiastic about our project, and has given me phone numbers for several contacts there.

I have been talking to photographer Matt Romano about Project Healing Waters (PHW) as he is very fa-miliar with it, and in fact, has taken most of the pho-tos used in their displays. I originally had some con-cerns with PHW, but Matt has allayed most of them. Because of this, I have asked the board to consider signing up with PHW for a year. If it turns out that PHW is not a good fit for us, we can change at a later date.

Other volunteers include Ed Penry and John Dettrey, past and present deans of our Fly Fishing School, and volunteer Dan Rudloff is a licensed PA guide. Chris Burns has been sending me some greatly appreciated suggestions. I have not yet met Jay, Dan, Chris, and Lee Evan Tabas, but hope to soon.

Head Honcho

Up until now, I have set myself up as the contact per-son for this project, but eventually I want my role to be in the areas of fly tying instruction and stream tactics. I mentioned this at the January board meeting, and Chuck Cutshall has agreed to head up this ef-fort. With this kind of support, I think this project will turn out to be mutually beneficial to both veterans and VFTU.

I guess there was a lot more going on than I thought. See you at the TROUT SHOW!

Amy Ruhe is back at her Valley Forge National Histori-cal Park desk from maternity leave. She has jumped right on the Keeper of the Stream program. We are re-looking at the program to see how we can improve its effectiveness. We are thinking we might do a little re-aligning and re-assignment of the beats to get better coverage. We are also looking into having the beat volunteer obtain land owners’ permission to cross their property. As you may be aware, land-owners’ permissions have been a big stumbling block in getting the program to an effective level. If you are inter-ested in the program and becoming a volunteer please contact me, Pete Goodman at [email protected] or Amy Ruhe at [email protected].
