Growing into the Future

In 2003-2004, the College constructed andopened the new 94-bed Bridges Residence Hall, completed a new entrance to the campus, iden-

tified the location where over 20 new lamppostswith signage banners will be installed, added trees, shrubs, and ground cover to beautify the campus, andinstalled irrigation systems to support these plantings. As adeclaration of faith in the mission of the College, the Board secured a loan

to cover these projects. A $1 million gift from SMC Trustee, Ms. Susan Bridges and her family, infuseda contagious spirit of optimism in the students, faculty, staff, Trustees, and friends of the College. Thatspirit continues as plans are made for the future of the College.

At the 2004 February Board meeting, Trustees engaged in a “needs analysis” of the institution.Leaders from the area of Computer Services presented an overview of computer and technology needs, emphasizing the ineffective and disjointed administrative software system that must be replaced assoon as possible. Following this presentation, Trustees toured several campus facilities and soon con-cluded that much work must be done to upgrade housing and educational facilities throughout the insti-tution.

Following the tour of campus facilities, the Trustees participated in a fundraising workshop led bythe Institutional Advancement staff. The workshop led to a declaration by Trustees that it will take ateam effort to raise sufficient funds to eliminate the current debt on the Bridges Residence Hall and toprovide adequate resources to address student housing concerns and the academic needs of theCollege.

The Board directed the administration to initiate a study of Willard Residence Hall to determine ifthe College should remodel the facility and restore it as a residence hall, remodel and convert the facili-ty to other purposes, or demolish the structure and build another new residence hall. The results ofthe study will be presented to the Board in the May Board meeting.

Recognizing that the number and state of classrooms and faculty offices in the Montgomery ScienceBuilding, Walker Classroom Building and the Bridges Arena are insufficient to meet the educationalneeds and expectations of students and faculty, the Board will consider renovating these facilitiesand/or constructing a new classroom building. The Board also noted that the location of the music anddrama departments overlaps the teaching of physical education and health classes in the BarrettLearning Center. As Trustees toured the Barrett Learning Center, other needs were identified: Thelighting in Camak Auditorium needs to be upgraded, the carpet on the mezzanine walkway around thegymnasium floor needs to be replaced, and the training room and fitness areas are too small to meetcurrent institutional needs. Ultimately, a field house needs to be constructed to support our intercolle-giate athletic program.

Alumni and friends of the College, you are a significant part of the SMC Team. We consider you tobe among our finest teammates. We are grateful for your gifts and ask that you continue to supportthe College as we move forward. With your assistance, we are confident that the future of this greatinstitution is on a firm foundation. What a marvelous time to be involved in crafting the future ofSpartanburg Methodist College!

also serves as faculty advisor for Phi ThetaKappa, a national honor society of two-year col-lege students. Last year he decided that volun-teering at the center would be a worthwhile stu-dent project. Since starting out with seven stu-dents in the fall of 2002, Haller has recruited

additional students to join the PTK members incaring for dogs and cats and assisting the staffby cleaning cages, grooming, or just taking thedogs out for a walk on the center grounds.

The work is less about complexities of ani-mal behavior and more about perseverance anddedication. Simply taking time to toss a ball ortake a walk is therapeutic – not only for thedogs – but also the human volunteers.

Affectionately stroking a dog’s fur coat orscratching behind its ears can go a long way.

Ponnicaterral McKenzie first gotinvolved with the Center during Freshmen

Day of Service last August. “I was oneof the lucky ones to go to theHumane Society. Once we got tosocializing with the animals, I fell inlove,” McKenzie recalls. After that,he returned to the shelter each

week. “Most of the time I walk thedogs, pet them, or groom them,”McKenzie added. Sometimes he helpsthe staff with feeding, watering, clean-ing cages, or taking out the garbage.Theresa Whitson endures episodes ofbeing jumped on by an overly eagerdog, knowing that she can make thedifference between their finding a lov-ing home or being put down.

“I always wanted a dog, andfinally got one when I was about 15,but I love dogs,” said Whitson, whoenjoys being able to work with sever-

For just over a year now, SMC students havebeen helping save the lives of dogs simplyby giving them attention and making them

feel wanted. The Spartanburg Humane Societydaily sees unwanted canines for a number ofreasons. Economic downturns and changingfamily situations work not only against people, but also against their pets. When an owner getslaid off from his job he may find himself unableto afford proper care for a pet. Moving from ahouse to an apartment that prohibits pets alsoleaves owners with difficult choices.

Like people, dogs experience trauma whensuch changes occur. Starved for attention, thesedogs are often hyperactive when a potentialowner looks them over, and a more docileanimal is chosen instead. This also meansthe already-overburdened animal shelterwill eventually have to euthanize thosepotential pets that are not adopted.

Volunteers at Spartanburg HumaneSociety’s Education and AdoptionCenter dare to look beyond thedogs’ extra-frisky behavior andbefriend them, hoping to makea life-saving difference. Thesimple act of running with adog and playing with it helpsbuild confidence and overcomethe trauma of abandonment.

Jim and Lynn Haller ofSpartanburg Methodist College fre-quently come to the aid of unwanteddogs at the facility. The Hallers havepersonally shared their home with afew of the dogs. Jim directs the col-lege’s Learning Resources Center andLynn is a mathematics professor. Jim

For the Center’s staff, volunteers are essen-tial in light of severe funding cuts. CenterDirector Joel Warner says, “We’ve had to cutback and try to still provide for the animals.”According to Warner, the center sees 18,000 ani-mals a year, far more than it was designed tohandle. Warner hopes that increased educationabout spaying and neutering will help turn thosenumbers around. But the need further under-scores the value of volunteers. Lisa Cook,Volunteer Education Coordinator at the center, says volunteers are needed most for socializingwith the animals, especially adult dogs. Cooksays the animals don’t get out as much sincefunding cutbacks have forced them to reducetheir staff.

For those considering volunteering at thecenter, Lynn offers this warning: “You’ll fall inlove if you hang around too long.”

al dogs in addition to her own. The more Whitsonand other student volunteers spend time with thedogs, the better their chances for adoption. Dogsgetting extra attention from Whitson and theother volunteers are calmer when people visit.Whitson feels she’s made a positive contributionwhen one of her dogs gets adopted.

Misha Gregory, a student who is a work-study at the library, saw Jim signing up anotherstudent to help at the shelter one day. Also a doglover, Gregory decided to get involved and beganvolunteering at the facility. For Gregory, whodoesn’t have a pet at home, caring for the dogsis a plus. “In a way I get entertained, and itgives you a good feeling when you walk dogs orplay with them, knowing people don’t normallygive them any attention.” Gregory takes one ortwo dogs into a play area at the center. “We walkthem around the building where there is a grassyarea in the back.”

Reaching OutBy Kim DayDirector of Student Activities and Leadership Development

It was a normal Wednesday morning.Around 8:30 a.m., I was walking up thesteps of the Student Center ready toface the challenges of a new day, when

my cell phone unexpectedly rang. I stoppedright outside the door and started franticallysearching through the receipts, gum wrap-pers, and other odds and ends that usuallycrowd my purse while trying to find my cellphone. Various thoughts ran through mymind. Is it my mother or father? Hassomething happened to someone in my fam-ily? Maybe it is a student who needs to askme a question. As I looked at the incomingcall message flashing on my phone, I did notrecognize the number, but answerednonetheless.

It was the mother of a student callingfrom an Upstate hospital. My cell phonenumber was the only number for SMC shecould find without access to a Spartanburgphone book or the Internet. Her daughterwas a member of the Student GovernmentAssociation and had attended our winterretreat. I had asked the students not tobring cell phones on the retreat, but hadgiven them my cell number to share withtheir families in case of an emergency. Now, over a month later, that number wasput to use. The mother shared with me thather father-in-law was in the hospital and wasnot expected to make it through the day.She knew her daughter would not share thisinformation with anyone as she tends tokeep things bottled up inside. This motherwanted to make sure that someone at SMC

9:00 p.m. – Ah, a bitof time to chill. I’mgoing to hang outwith my suitematesand do homework. This would also be agood time to read myBible or to catch upon laundry. 10:20 p.m. – I think Imight grab a quickshower before thedrying is done.

11:30 p.m. – I wonder if Kim is up to some latenight study. No, I’d better chill tonight. I’ll prob-ably catch her tomorrow. Since I’m going to bedsoon, I could maybe go to breakfast for oncewith Amber and Lara. But then that would meangetting up early. Maybe next week. 11:37 p.m. – Let’s see who is awake. I’ll chillwith Lindsay, my new suitemate, for a few min-utes. I’m so glad she is cool with our “staying uplate” ways. 12:00 a.m. – Time for bed. At the beginning ofthe year, I wanted to make myself a curfew, andbe in bed between 10 and 11. That didn’t workout. I’m lucky to be in so early tonight. I’d bet-ter call Mom and say good night. I’m sure shewill tell Dad and my brothers good night for me.I don’t think Mom has called me today to getafter me for something I did or didn’t do. Did Ido my homework? But of course (most of it).Oh, well, good night.

go to the student lounge for my hall program. 8:30 p.m. – For the hall program, Dipali and Ibring some snacks. We planned to watch a movieon the big-screen TV, but there’s a problem withthe DVD player. Instead we decide to watch TVshows. 10:30 p.m. – I get an hour break and decide to dohomework.11:30 p.m. – I go toHammond, where Ihave to sit at the deskand sign people out, making sure visitorsleave by midnight. After everyone issigned out I head outto do final rounds, then return my radioto the security office.12:00 a.m. – I havejust finished watchinga movie with myfriends Stephen andPatrick. I often haveto wait late to hang out with friends. But tonight Ionly have time to watch a movie. Now I’m readyto go to bed and tomorrow I’ll start another busyday.

knew what was happening and could bethere to support her daughter and inform therest of the SMC community in the event ofthis grandfather’s death. I assured themother that I would contact her daughterthat morning and gave her the number tothe Academic Affairs office so that her pro-fessors and instructors could be properlyinformed.

I hung up the phone and walked to myoffice. I waited a few minutes before callingthis student. After all, it was before 9 a.m.,and she is in college. When I didcall, I briefly explained to thestudent that I was aware of hergrandfather’s illness and wasthere for her if she needed totalk. She claimed to be fine andsaid she only wanted to continuethroughout the day as normal.About an hour later, my officephone rang. This same studentwas on the other end in tears. She had changed her mind andwanted to know if my offer stillstood. I encouraged her to comeimmediately, and a few minuteslater the two of us stood in myoffice in an embrace. I listenedto her express her fears and sad-ness concerning the imminentdeath of her grandfather. Iencouraged her to share with methe good times she rememberedwith him, how this man hadmade an incredible impact onwho she had become. We dis-cussed her feelings concerningwhether or not she should leaveschool and go to the hospital tobe with the rest of her family during the lastfew hours of his life. She shared that shefelt comfortable with the precious time shehad spent with her grandfather over the pastweekend, and that was how she wanted toremember him, not lying on a hospital bedgasping for breath. After about 45 minutes, she left ready to face the difficult days thatlay ahead. Later that afternoon, she calledto let me know her grandfather had passedaway. I hung up the phone, said a prayerfor her and her family, and began makingthe calls to necessary people on campus to

inform them this student would be out ofclass for the rest of the week.

I saw God working in this situation fromthe beginning, but it was not until later thatnight, at choir practice at my church, that Ireally understood God’s sovereignty. I wassharing this story with my fellow choir mem-bers and asking them to remember this fam-ily in prayer when my eyes were trulyopened. It was no accident that my cellphone number was the only number thismother could find. It was no coincidence

that the student was in her roomthe first time I called. It was nocoincidence that my schedule thatmorning was free so that I couldfully devote my time and energyinto helping this student grieve. Itwas no accident that monthsbefore, God had inspired this younggirl to run for a position on theStudent Government Association,an organization I advise, so thatshe would feel comfortable openingup to me. The Lord also saw fit toplace this student in my FreshmenYear Experience class, thus makingthat relationship stronger. God, inHis infinite power and wisdom, waspreparing this stage long before thegrandfather started showing signsof failing health. He forged a trustand respect between this studentand myself so that someone wasthere to help her grieve.

I am not the hero in this situa-tion. Anyone could have done whatI did – listen, encourage, andembrace. But God chose me forthis task and only asked that I be

willing and obedient. When all is said anddone, that is all He asks from each of us.When I was younger, we used to sing a songat church camp entitled “The Part that HeWrote for Me.” This was my part, writtenspecifically for me by God Almighty. TheLord used me that day to make a differencein the life of a student. More importantly, Heused the situation to remind me of the dif-ference He has made in my life and to onceagain show me His providence, glory, andunfailing love.

“I am not the hero inthis situation. Anyonecould have done what Idid — listen, encourage, and embrace. But Godchose me for this taskand only asked that Ibe willing and obedi-ent.”

Here are some more scenes from last February’s snow.More than six inches of snowfall transformed the SMCcampus into a Winter Wonderland. With two days off fromclass, many students found time for sledding down someof the slopes on campus and engaged in snowball fights. Some even found enough snow to build an igloo! At thesame time, the SMC maintenance staff stayed busy clear-

ing walkways to ensure that thewhite fluffy stuff didn’t have achance to transform into slipperyice.

How can life insurance be used to support SMC?How can life insurance be used to support SMC?

According to Mike Bowers, Directorof Gift Planning at SMC, yourinsurance policy may be valuable in

ways you never thought about. For exam-ple, anyone wishing to make a significantcontribution can use life insurance to makea gift to the College by naming SpartanburgMethodist College as the owner and benefi-ciary of a life insurance policy. There mayeven be tax benefits with this type of gift.If the policy is not paid-up, a donor canreceive a charitable income tax deductionbased on the lesser of the policy’s fair market value orthe net premiums paid. Donors who make gifts ofpaid-up policies can receive a charitable income taxdeduction for the policy’s cash sur-render value. Insurance is an excel-lent way to leverage a gift. This isa really painless way for anyonedesiring to show your appreciationfor SMC, SJC or TII to make a sig-nificant contribution.

Some have even used insurancepolicies to honor a loved one orremember someone special. Theymake a significant one-time contri-bution that generates enough inter-est to pay premiums and keep thepolicy in force. Others make annu-al contributions to the College toallow the College to pay annualpremiums. This type of gift is notlimited to individuals. Class mem-bers or other groups can contributecash to a fund that would providepremium payments on a particularindividual.

Another important use of lifeinsurance is its ability to replace thevalue of an asset that has been

given to Spartanburg Methodist College. Adonor can use the tax savings produced bythe charitable income tax deduction to pur-chase and pay premiums on life insurancepolicies whose proceeds equal the value ofthe gifted property. This arrangement canserve to protect the interests of family mem-bers.

Call the Office of Gift Planning at SMCtoday or consult your tax advisor or insur-ance professional for additional information.

Contact Mike Bowers at (864) 587-4220 or [email protected].

Mike BowersDirector of Gift

Planning

Here are a few ways your insurance policycan benefit SMC:

1. Name Spartanburg Methodist College as secondary benefici-ary or contingent beneficiary in an insurance policy. This option keeps the primary pur-pose of the policy in place – to provide for the interests of the primary beneficiary with additional benefit going to meet your charitable goals forSMC.

2. Anyone who has had a policy in force that has served its purpose can make SMC the primary beneficiary. An exam-ple would be a policy taken out many years ago to make payments on a mortgage, but the policyholder’s house is paid off.

3. Transfer ownership of a policyto SMC. The policy’s face value is the size of a potentialgift.

AA RRecipe for Educational Successecipe for Educational SuccessCookbook sales benefit scholarshipCookbook sales benefit scholarship

Quiche Me Loraine is more than just a greatcookbook, full of hearty main dishes, appetizers, relishes, pickles, vegetable dishes, breads and pas-tries and desserts. It is also a cookbook for thehealth-conscious, with recipes for healthy cookingand eating, as well as “heart healthy” dishes.

But this cookbook is special for an even biggerreason. Proceeds from its sale benefit the IrisClardy Ellis and Loraine Ellis Memorial Scholarship.

The cookbook is truly a labor of love for SMCTrustee and retired United Methodist Minister Dr. EdEllis and his wife, Dr. Charlotte Lindler Ellis.

Shortly after losing his first wife, Iris Clardy Ellisin 1996, Ellis was faced with the news that his onlychild, Loraine Ellis, was dying of cancer. Loraineknew how much the College meant to her father andmother, who met at Spartanburg Junior College asstudents in the 1950s. Loraine herself attended thecollege and shared her parents’ commitment to theirAlma Mater. Just weeks before her death inDecember, 1998, she said to her father, “Daddy, there are others outthere just like you were. If someone doesn’t care enough to do some-thing, they won’t have a chance for an education.” She requested tobe cremated, and asked her father to establish a scholarship insteadof buying a grave space and a casket.

After struggling with his daughter’s request, Ed agreed to estab-lish the scholarship, which began with $6,000. The scholarship hadgrown to $25,000, but Ellis hoped to increase the total value of thefund to the $100,000 level, enabling it to become a full tuition scholar-ship.

Loraine was the owner of Quiche Me Loraine, a catering busi-ness in Columbia. Charlotte suggested compiling Loraine’s manyrecipes, along with those of her late mother into a cookbook, whichwould be sold to benefit the scholarship. The Ellises produced thecookbook with their own money to ensure that every penny of pro-ceeds from its sale goes to the scholarship.

According to Mike Bowers, SMC Director for Planned Giving, there are a limited number of cookbooks still available. The Ellises arecommitted to keeping Loraine’s dream alive and would appreciate thesupport of anyone buying the cookbook. Consider this cookbook witha purpose while there are still copies left. You’ll help make the dreamof a college education come true for a deserving student.

Bon Apetit!
