In the weeks before the Animal Print goes to print, I’m usually
up very early most days working on layout, content and ads - try-ing to squeeze every hour out of the day. In the winter this can be quite difficult, if not painful to get myself and the pups out of bed. But, this week and morning in particular, I’ve been greeted with not only the smell of

flowers in the air but a warm 7am breeze I’ve not been accustomed to in many months. Yes, folks...I do believe that spring is upon us!
Just a few weeks ago, during all the rain and horrible flooding I was convinced that the sun and warm breeze was only a fluke and worried along with everyone else that the waters would have trouble receding, but luckily the sun has come back and the drying out has begun.
As flood victims headed back to their homes and businesses, I began to hear some amazing tales of both heroics and suffering of many folks and their pets because of the flooding, evacuations and damage left behind from the flood. I thought it was important to share just a few of these stories in order to start the spring off with a sense of pride at how our community has come together in the face of such devastation.
I hope you enjoy reading “Flooded Memories” (page 12) as well as our Green Products Guide (page 26) and an especially inspiring story about Luke Robinson and his 2 dogs (page 22) trek over a span of 2 years in the name of canine cancer research.
Lastly, I would like to wish a very special lady, and this issue’s cover model, Cricket a Happy Birthday! Cricket is turning 15 and in honor of this momentous occasion her dog parents Traer Scott and Jesse Blair are throwing her a Quinceañera Party (aka Sweet 15). You can read more about that on page 10.

Mutt census: Mars is gathering data on dogs 2010 is the year of the U.S. Census, but not just for humans. For the first time ever, the esti-mated 38 million mixed breed dogs in the U.S. will also have the chance to stand up and be counted in the inaugural “2010 National Mutt Census” conducted by Mars Veterinary, maker of the breed identity test. Breed tests aren’t required to participate, but are encouraged. The National Mutt Census covers the basic information -- whether the dogs were adopted from a shelter, their size and their diet, but it’s a great first step towards understanding the make-up of the American mixed breed population.The results may also provide researchers a better understanding of the types and fre-quency of diseases among this group of dogs that may ultimately help determine health risk factors for certain breed mixes.To participate visit www.muttcensus.com

Hi Animal Print, I just want to thank the staff of RI Animal Medical Center, especially to Charles Callanan for ensuring the safety of all of the boarded animals during the 3/31 - 4/1, 2010 flood. Charles stayed overnight with the dogs and cats to make sure that they were safe from the rising waters, and contacted all owners very early that morning to notify of the evacuation. My dog Theo (5 1/2 year old boy, rescue pup, beagle mix) was in good hands.
It was difficult for me to get this news since I was away on business travel at the time. Theo’s other dad (Kevin Lagor) was able to assist onsite with evacuation of the animals and got Theo home safe later that morning. Kevin mentioned that all of the animals enjoyed their pontoon rides. Thanks also to the Warwick Animal Control Officer and the local Fire Departments that assisted with the evacuation.

I am not a fan of dog parties or doggie dresses or any of that very fashionable fru-fru stuff that well-meaning people impose on non-humans, but this spring brought such a
momentous milestone in my little family’s life that I simply had to celebrate in some big way.
My dog Cricket is turning 15. Like most creatures, complex little Cricket is many things: a loyal and dedicated friend, a rescue dog with a harrowing past, a non-discriminating connoisseur of cheese and perhaps most importantly, a survivor. A year and a half ago, she was diagnosed with liver cancer. Again and again, she defied

all odds and survived. Now, on the eve of her 15th birthday, she is completely deaf but otherwise, quite active and normal. She still loves to run in the woods, still climbs the treacherous stairs leading up to our bedroom every night and still takes great joy in barking at old ladies in the park. To me, it is a true miracle that she is here. Although the life of one dog may seem insignificant in the shadow of our complex and careworn world, in my world, she is all important.
We decided that a Quinceañera was the perfect theme for her party which would allow us to mix a little bit of humor with a lot of love. In many Hispanic cultures, when a girl turns 15 she is thrown a Quinceañera or “Sweet 15” which marks her official passage into womanhood. A Quinceañera is a serious event usually celebrated with a special Mass held for the young woman fol-lowed by a big, vibrant party for friends and family. Her “Court of Honor” is a selection of close friends who escort her. Of course Cricket’s hallmark 15th year is in fact, her entrance into true old age in doggie world- but that makes the theme all the more fun.
Some of our closest canine friends were invited to be the old girl’s Court of Honor and human invitees were limited to dog-loving friends who have been part of Cricket’s life in some way. I wanted the décor to be both vibrant and quirky so in addition to a large portrait of the birthday girl, colorful Mexican paper flowers were made to hang in garlands, mingling with fresh flowers in vases on the tables. Catering from a fantastic local Mexican restaurant provided lunch for our guests followed by a sweet offering in the form of a cake topped with a fondant rendering of Cricket. A bone shaped dog-friendly cake (made from Crick’s prescription food) and a feline shaped piñata filled with dog nibbles rounded off the treats for canine company.
So in the end, the recipe was simple: take a local dog friendly venue, combine with great food, friends, fun decorations, a few rituals borrowed from the Quinceañera tradition, and voila …. a fun and colorful celebration to mark the 15th birthday of a most extraordinary friend.

For many of us, the morning of Tuesday, March 31st 2010 began like any other day: driving to work,
running errands, walking our dogs, making breakfast for our children. While the rain poured down in sheets outside of our windows, we felt safe inside our homes where it is warm and dry, and we are surrounded with the familiar mementos and keepsakes of our lives. We have all seen the old black and white photographs, holding within their tattered and bent edges dramatic images of the flood waters sent surging throughout our state from The Great Hurricane of 1938. However to most of us those photographs are but relics of a bygone era, an era in which its passing took with it the possibility of such a thing occurring again. Each year that comes to pass, further separating ourselves from history’s tragedies, brings
with it a greater sense of confidence and insulation from harm. Yet as we learned on that now historical Tuesday in March, history can repeat itself with a terrifying vengeance that can shatter our illusions of invulnerability.
The morning of March 31st began normally enough for Chad Callanan, owner of 4 Paws Pet Resort and RI Animal Medical Center. He began his day as he would any other, coming into the hospital and checking the day’s schedule, looking in on the boarders to make sure they were all happy, safe and sound, and placing calls to vendors to order medical supplies. He had never experi-enced any flooding, or indeed any amount of water in his building ever before, and so to the best of his knowledge he had nothing to worry about. But as the rain continued, the river rose and the news anchors began delivering

warnings, he said he “got a funny feeling and decided to hang around.” His “funny feeling” proved to be life saving.
Around 10:30pm he heard the dogs in the kennel, of which there were nine, begin to bark and fuss. When he went to check on them, the kennel’s floors were bone dry, but he decided to start moving the dogs upstairs any-way… just in case. He began with the smaller dogs and after moving two of them up to the hospital he noticed water seeping up into the kennels through the drains on the floors. By the time he moved the fifth dog upstairs, the remaining dogs were standing in water up to their ankles. At this point he also noticed that the river which runs alongside the building had risen to completely flood the yard and cover the kennel exit’s steel doors. He
quickly moved the remaining dogs and two cats upstairs to the hospital and, for the time being, to safety. Then he and Bittles, a schnauzer who had become particularly agitated, went upstairs to rest and check the weather and news. At 1:30 am the building’s fire alarm went off, Chad knew this would bring the Warwick Fire Department to the scene and he went outside to survey the surroundings. The scene that met him was shocking; the entire building was surrounded with quickly moving water, boasting a current so powerful that he saw a hot tub and a car being swept away down the street. The Warwick Fire Department arrived moments later, but were unable to reach the building. He called a 911 dispatcher to patch him thru to rescue workers and at this point was told to evacuate the premises, but unwilling to leave the animals

in his care behind, he chose to stay. He told the 911 dispatcher that he would need to be provided with a boat to carry the animals across the rising waters, and an animal control vehicle to be waiting for them on the other side to ensure that in this stressful situation the dogs could be transported together without risk of altercations. Being unable to safely transport the animals from this side of the building, they decided to call in the Cranston Fire Department, and at 4:30 am, with the water steadfastly rising, two men in full survival suits appeared at the door. Chad, assisted by staff members, Warwick Animal Control, and the Cranston Fire Department carried the animals two by two in an RHIB inflatable boat to the animal control vehicle. Their efforts continued throughout the night and well into the morning hours. Chad had called all of the owners of the animals in his care pervious to the rescue and was able to reunite some of them with their pets by noon. Those animals whose owners could not make it to the scene were taken home by caring staff members until they as well could be reunited. Chad Callanan went to extraordinary efforts to save the lives of the animals entrusted in his care, but he could not have done it alone. He wishes to express his thanks to Officer York of Warwick Animal Control, both the Cranston and Warwick Fire Departments, and to staff members Dr. McStay, Kristina Springle, Luke McDonald, and Julio Augusto.
One very thankful owner is Shane McCann, whose beautiful adopted Beagle mix Theo was
one of the dogs safely evacuated that night. Shane was away on business in Manhattan when he received word of the evacuation, and he is extremely grateful that Theo’s other Dad, Kevin Lagor, could be there in his stead to bring Theo home safely and assist in the rescue efforts of the other animals as well. Shane was watching the news, live from Cranston, while in Manhattan and at one point turned to his friend and said “If I turn on The Today Show and see Theo in a little life boat I’m going to freak out.” He had no idea how foreshadowing that statement would be, and thankfully Theo quite enjoyed his boat ride.
Crystal Sylvia, of Taunton, Massachusetts, was also going about business as usual on the morning of March 31st. The rain was pouring down, but she took her three rescued Pit Bulls, Rubin, Mia, and Karma for a long walk and settled them into their crates downstairs before running off to work. However when she returned home she heard the dogs barking and sounding distressed. When she looked downstairs, there was well over a foot of water in the house. Parts of their hardwood flooring had come loose and were floating past her disbelieving eyes. Fortunately, the dogs were all unharmed. She and her husband had never expected to be effected by the flooding and their sump pumps failed to assist in helping eliminate the rising waters in their home. The couple was forced to evacuate their home for the next 48 hours due to the severe flooding on their street. They were unable to bring their dogs with them. Terrified and overwrought, they secured the dogs into crates, high above the water line, with blankets, chew toys, food and water and prayed that they would be unharmed both physically and emotionally. When they were able to return home, they saw that their prayers for the dogs had been answered; all three were unharmed, albeit scared and shaken up. However their home was destroyed. They tried in vain to clean and remove the water, but the house’s foundation was so severely damaged that the structure is now unlivable. The couple’s options for housing are very limited, and their

only choice is to move in with Crystal’s grandmother in Pawtucket, RI. Pawtucket has breed specific legislation which reads as follows “It shall be unlawful for any person to own, possess, keep, exercise control over, maintain, harbor, transport, or sell within the City any pit bull dog.” City of Pawtucket Municipal Code, Chapter 116, Article IV, Section 116-37.1.
While Crystal and her husband are incredibly thankful for her Grandmother’s generosity in taking them in, they are devastated that they can not bring their beloved dogs. In sharing their story Crystal wrote, “It is absolutely heart-breaking to have to re-home my babies. My husband and I cannot have children, so our dogs have filled that void for us. This is absolutely the worst ordeal we have ever endured. Our only hope through all of this is that our dogs are loved and happy in their future homes.”
When one imagines the overwhelming hardship of losing their home and belongings both of monetary and sentimental value, it is nearly impossible to comprehend the additional crippling pain, sorrow, and heartbreak of also being forced to give up their dogs, whom they have been loving, nurturing, and caring for these many years. Happily, they have found a wonderful home for their eldest dog, Rubin. He will be living with children who adore him and he will have the companionship of another

dog in the home. However, Mia and Karma’s futures are still fearfully uncertain.
Sadly, many animals have been displaced due to the flooding, including those who were already homeless and in desperate need of love and permanent sanctuary. The Warwick Animal Shelter suffered severe devastation. Thirty-four cats and sixteen dogs were evacuated from the premises. As soon as the warnings were issued on the news, phone calls and emails went out to volunteers and support staff. Within thirty minutes people began arriving, cat carriers and dog crates in hand, to bring the frightened animals to temporary foster homes. The safe evacuation and relocation of every animal housed in the shelter was a massive undertaking and huge group effort. Animal Control officers, city maintenance workers, Transwick bus drivers, volunteers and staff from other shelters were all on scene to assist in everything from putting together crates, to physically removing animals from their kennels, helping them onto busses, and trans-porting animals to other shelters. Ann Corvin, director of the Warwick Animal Shelter described the scene as such, “It was a scene I will never forget, the office filled with cat carriers, people scrambling to move the dogs, staff moving cats out as quickly as possible to their new foster homes, the receptionist throwing whatever documents were on

Novelist Sidonie Gabrielle said it best: “Bulldogs are adorable, with faces like toads that have been sat on.” The original features of the bull dog breed have been exaggerated to produce the current little meatballs we all know and love, but at one time served very specific purposes. Low, stocky, muscu-lar bodies provided power and stability, which were essential during bull bait-ing. While flat faces and deep-set noses and extended under bites allowed the dogs to keep breathing while they hung on like vices. When this horrible sport was finally outlawed, the bull dog no longer had a job and so breed enthusi-asts bred their beloved bullies for looks and compan-ionship. Other bully breeds, such as boxers and pit bull type dogs, are also stocky, muscular,
with wide stances, and wide, powerful jaws for the purposes of stability and power.
Bloodhounds are believed to have 40 times as many scent receptors than humans. Enlarged noses, overly wrinkled faces, and droopy moist lips are ideal for trapping scent molecules and making these hounds the super sniffer of the dog world. The ears of all scent hounds, including bloodhounds’, are believed to be long and floppy so they can hang close to the ground and swing back and forth to waft the scent. Solid and strongly built, these dogs are bred for endurance rather than speed. This allows bloodhounds, and other scent hounds, to really focus on the scent and track down their quarry.
The Rastafarians of the dog world, Pulis and Komondores, have tight curls that form chords similar to dreadlocks. Believed to be several thousand years old, these hard working sheepdogs were bred to herd and guard livestock. Their hair may look like a pile of spa-ghetti, but it is perfectly suited to protect these hairy herders from extreme hot and cold dry climates, from tough vegetation, and from wild animals by acting like a suit of armor. Yah mon!

are more varieties of dog varieties than there are flavors
of ice cream; but why so many shapes and sizes? What
could those goofy hound ears possible be for? Why are
some faces so darn pointy? Well, different dog features
were historically bred to serve very specific functions –
few are random. Dog breeding is like evolution in fast
forward. Specific personality traits and physical

for “Badger dog” and, as any dachs-hund lover will tell you, these powerful little buggers are tough and tenacious. Dachsies were designed to track down badger, rabbit, fox, boar, and even wol-verine. Their floppy ears keep dirt and grass out of the ears while the straight curved tails are easy to spot in the grass - or grab a hold of to pull the dog out of a burrow.
And then there’s greyhounds – the supermodels of the dog world. Grace-ful and breathtaking on the runway, yet other times gangly as a fourteen year old boy at a junior high dance. Long, powerful legs are obviously well suited for speed, while incredibly deep chest cavities hold oversized hearts and lungs to fuel their speed. The long, thin tails serve as rudders for narrow, flexible bodies that are as aerodynamic as their long and skinny beaks. If you’ve ever
met a greyhound, you’ve probably had the pleasure of being jammed right in the rear end by a huge, bulb-like nose with enlarged nostrils, perfectly designed to intake more oxygen.
Giant, fluffy, and jammed packed with slobbery kisses, the lovable Newfound-land might seem like just an oversized goof ball, but they are actually well designed machines. Webbed toes, pow-erful limbs, strong bones, and oversized muscles are perfectly designed for endurance when swimming through waves and tides while waterproof, ultra thick coats protect them from icy wa-ter when rescuing wayward swimmers. Those floppy jowls might fling spit like a semi-automatic, but the wrinkles and folds allow air to pass through a mouthful of nasty seawater, keeping it out of their bellies and lungs.
The list could go on and on, with each breed having specific features – and personality traits – for very intentional reasons. So the next time you see a poodle prancing through the show ring with that REDICU-LOUS haircut, don’t make fun. That haircut has a reason, and that reason is based on what the dog was originally intended to do. Do a little research; you might just learn something really cool!

My next new elective here at R.I.S.D. has a sort of green hue: it’s titled “Birds in Books” and roams a terrain
from evolution to ecology and environmentalism to the library and the pet store. I’m making up a list of recommended and required texts, including Audubon’s prints, Peterson’s photo-graphs, and a few flicks like “Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill.” Beyond the visual materials, I trace literary ornithology and mythology from “Green Mansions,” about a bird-girl, to “Wes-ley the Barn Owl” and “Birds as Individuals.” Oh, the bibliog-
raphy could go on and on; I have to curb my enthusiasm like an eager puppy on a restless walk with a leash on. I may even include “Eating Animals,” by Jonathan Foer Safran, a recent bestseller protesting the way our industrialized meat commerce deprives both bird and beast of the meaning of their lives in the land of freedom and liberty and the right to pursue happiness.I do hope this course spurs conversation and discussion. of a book about birds as omens...like all our pets. I’ve actually been preparing to offer such a class since earliest boyhood. I wrote a book in grammar school about the evolution of our feathered friends. My older brother did the illustra-tions, complete with sketches of the archeopteryx, a sort of winged dinosaur, and the pterodactyl, and the maps of migratory routes for hummingbirds and terns. I displayed my typed and stapled pamphlet in the glass case at my local branch library, but I believe I must have destroyed it during one of my sessions before the brick hearth, where I burned love letters, embarrassing confessions, and odds and ends of paper, to clear some space for new thoughts and adventures, new chapters. I want to drag this proposed syllabus to the consideration of pets and the businesses connected with the cares and concerns for the blessed creatures we protect and which in turn protect us. I think I’ll provide some propaganda for PETA and other animal rights organizations. There are some excellent scholarly and legalistic works, and I already have shelves of them among my libraries, in loft, cellar, attic, office. Somehow, all these pages should nourish the mind and guide the hand to be kinder and gentler toward the species and the habitat beyond the sidewalks, roads, and floorboards of our own “civilization.”

giving dogs already stricken with cancers, a chance to enter trial research and drug programs. Another plus is that this technique reduces the dependence of inducing diseases on otherwise healthy animals for research purposes.
The journey has been a long and colorful one. Along the way, they have encountered all types of weather conditions, from wind and torrential rains, to blizzards and heat waves. Everything needed for the journey has been strapped to their backs and when its time to crash for the night they often pitch their pup tent along the side of the road. They have met thousands of people and their pets along the way, many of them opening up their homes and telling their stories about how cancer has personally affected their lives. They’ve stopped at local events and helped out local animal shelters. Each time they leave the route to sleep or volunteer for an event, they are brought back to the last point on the route where they left off. Their cause has become so popular that people literally come to greet them and cheer them on.
The progress of their journey covers approximately 8 to 10 miles in a day, with the boys currently making their way through Connecticut. Soon it will be Rhode Island’s turn to come out and show our support for Luke, Murphy and Hudson. At the time of printing, their tentative plan is to

Watching our beloved four-legged friend fight the disease can be very painful. Luke Robinson is one such man who has been through this experience, and it affected him in a profound way. After watching his first beloved Great Pyrenees, Malcolm, lose a hard fought battle with Osteo-sarcoma (a form of bone cancer), he decided he was going to do something extraordinary. Luke says, “Before he was given rest, I promised him I would devote the rest of my life to ridding the world of this devastating disease.”
Luke spent a full six months training with his two other Great Pyrenees, Hudson (Age 8) and Murphy (Age 3), in order to develop a system of communication so they could safely travel in a pack. He then put his belongings into storage, packed up his tent, backpacks and a couple of leashes and hit the road. They headed out for the ultimate dog walk: one that has stretched 2000 miles and has lasted over 2 years. It all began in March of 2008 in Austin, Texas and will finish when they finally reach the end of their two-year journey this June in Boston, Mass.
The trek, appropriately named 2 Dogs 2000 miles, has two primary goals: to raise awareness of the issue and to raise research money for the first nationwide epidemiological canine cancer study. The study has many benefits such as

It affects our mothers, fathers, friends, and neighbors. What many of us may not be aware of is that it also hits another important part of our lives…our pets. In fact, cancer is the number one cause of death in dogs. One in four dogs will fight the battle and the disease does not discriminate…it affects all breeds and all ages. Research has actually shown that dogs and humans can get the same types of cancers.

Brooklyn is a 10 month old Pitbull with beautiful blue eyes. Like most young pit bulls, Brooklyn has a lot of energy and will need help learning not to jump up and use his mouth when playing. Because of his exuberance, Brooklyn should not go home with kids under 12 as he could accidentally knock them over.
Benny is a sweet 9 month old Beagle that came to us because his former family had asthma. He is very friendly and loves to play. Benny is not housebroken and will need to be trained. Benny will do fine with other dogs and children, but he will not do well with cats.

Ann asks that due to the now overburdened and over-crowded status of other local shelters, owners take even greater precaution to ensure that their pets are properly ID’ed in the event that they become lost or separated. She also stated that what the shelter, which has been complete-ly gutted to the studs, needs more than anything else right now is monetary donations. Fortunately, owners and caregivers of animals, shelter workers and volunteers, are not alone in their efforts to protect pets, shelter animals, and wildlife from natural disasters, thanks to organizations such as RIDART. RIDART is a public/private/volunteer partnership dedicated to preparing for and responding to disasters ranging from storms, fires and flooding to oil spills and other environmental dangers posed to both domestic animals and wildlife. Their volunteer response team works under the supervision and guidance of Scott Marshall, DVM., state veterinarian of the DEM. RIDART assisted with evacuation efforts in both Warwick and Coventry, and in fact two volunteers drove to the homes of pet owners in Coventry to personally evacu-ate their pets and transport them to local shelters. They are equipped with two fully stocked trailers which can travel to stricken areas to help set up emergency shelters. One of these trailers was deployed to Thayer Arena, where many of the dogs from the Warwick Animal Shelter were temporarily taken. Sixty years from now images of churning deluges of water engulfing cars and swamping homes may hang in picture frames, yellowed and tattered with time, to serve as a fading remembrance of the Flood of 2010. But for those still here, whose lives were touched on Tuesday, March 31st by events either heroic or devastating, the memory will hang vivid in our minds, unable to be diluted or dimmed with the passing of time. Our hearts will continue to break for those who lost homes and loved ones, and our gratitude will still shine brightly for those whose selfless acts and courage prevented even greater loss.
