SSS & MACO Holds Joint Banquet in Honor of Graduating Seniors

On the evening of Sunday, May 2, the Black and Gold ballroom was decorated into a luxurious dining hall. And in the seats, there sat the SSS and MACO St. Olaf seniors, Class of 2010. Each senior waited anxiously

for the start of a special banquet, a banquet dedicated to their success in education and their accomplishments at St. Olaf. At this banquet, the seniors’ families, friends, professors, and mentors sat around them as Kathy Glampe and Bill Green welcomed everyone to a night of celebration. On this honorary day, SSS and MACO alumni were

also in attendances. With mouth-watering fried chicken as the main course for dinner, everyone listened to the many inspirational and blissful speeches.

A special guest speaker, an SSS alumna, Angelica Torralba-Olague (’05), returned to offer some words of advice to the graduating class. She stressed the three keys to succeeding in the “real world.” First, the importance of networking as a way of life; second, giving back to the community; and fi nally, getting out of your

comfort zone to try new things. After these wise words from the guest speaker, a few seniors were also given time to reminisce on their past four-years at St. Olaf.

Each senior speaker was fi lled with joy which could be easily seen by their never-ending smiles. They spoke with patience, happiness, and gratitude. One senior after another, stood in front of the guests and gave humbling speeches about their St. Olaf experiences. In conclusion to their speeches, they took the fi nal seconds of their time at the podium to say their “Thank you’s” to the St. Olaf faculty, the SSS staff, the McNair and other TRiO staff, and their families for the endless support that fueled their determination to aim for a higher education.

After a delicious dinner, and the joyful words from the seniors, Kathy Glampe and Bill Green concluded the

evening. The guests and seniors exited the Black and Gold ballroom, but not until everyone had their share of photos taken. The banquet ended and the seniors’ time as St. Olaf student will soon end too. With another celebration banquet enjoyed all that’s left for the seniors this year is a last week of fi nal exams, and a weekend of their offi cial graduation ceremony.

First Annual SSS Amazing Race

The Amazing Race took place on the bright and sunny Sunday afternoon of April 18. The fi rst-years of Student Support Services gathered to participate in SSS’s Amazing Race game for a chance to win a mystery prize.

The students were put into color-coded teams of three by Trey Williams, SSS Advisor and Amazing Race planner. The New Student Committee along with Trey Williams came up with the idea of having an Amazing Race to teach the fi rst years the value of teamwork, planning, and hard work, as well as to have a good time.

The game was simple; each team started with a set of fi ve questions. Each team had to answer all questions and then go to an assigned Board of Leaders member to be judged. If all questions were answered correctly, then the team received the next set of questions. But, if one question was answered wrong the team was penalized. The penalty was a fi ve minute time-out and everyone on the team was required to do ten push-ups. The questions corresponded to specifi c areas around campus. For example, how many parking spots are there behind Regents Hall? If the answer was not known off the top of one’s head, then, work, in this case running, was necessary to discover the answer.

The race was harsh for many. One Race participant was seen being carried by a teammate for part of the race, and Shoua Vang suffered terrible blisters due to a footwear malfunction. “IT WAS TORTURE!” described one participant after she had been forced by her teammates to run across the campus multiple times with minimal rest.

The results took everyone by surprise as the red team was thought to be favored. The fi rst place team was Team Teal which consisted of Xue Khang, Marco Silveira and Stephanie Villarreal. Although they were behind throughout most of the race, they came out on top in the end. When Xue Khang was asked why his team was successful in the end, he replied, “There was a lot of luck involved, but if it weren’t for teamwork, effective strategizing and most important, running like crazy, we wouldn’t have succeeded.” Congratulations to Team Teal, and we all look forward to next year’s Amazing Race!

The Student Support Services Senior Advice Night began as a suggestion from last year’s Board of Leaders meeting about what kind of events SSS should hold in the coming year. SSS has always had an Alumni

Advice Night that they combine with their Fried Chicken Night to give SSS students a chance to ask questions to SSS alumni regarding post-graduation plans and advice. The concept behind the Senior Night was to give the underclassmen an opportunity to converse with seniors of similar majors or concentrations.

This year’s Senior Advice Night turned out to be a great event, held on March 15, 2010. Nachos were served during the event with as many as 20 underclassmen and 15 seniors. The event was organized by Pa Houa Xiong, who originally came up with the idea for the event and asked seniors to participate in the event as well as made signs informing students to come in SSS. The event was divided into two parts; the fi rst part consisted of a large group discussion revolving around 10 seniors and was opened to all the underclassmen for questions. Most of the questions pertained to internships as well as how seniors decided on their

majors. During the second part the underclassmen divided up into groups led by a senior with their respective majors or interests. The smaller groups allowed the underclassmen to get to know the seniors better and ask questions that pertained only to that specifi c major.

We asked a senior who took part in the event, Lee Thao, what she thought of the event, “I really enjoyed the SSS Senior Advice Night as I felt I was able to help underclassmen that needed help about traveling abroad or interested in my majors and concentrations.” Underclassmen also had great things to say about the event. They thought it was helpful and recommended that we defi nitely do it again.

Student Support Services Senior ReceptionBy Alan Richardson-Hohn

On Thursday, April 29th many members of SSS gathered for a celebration of this year’s senior class. The event, called the SSS Senior Reception, was a place for all members of SSS to refl ect on the time they have

spent here at St. Olaf with the graduating class and to wish the graduates good luck in the future. Two ways these memories were shared were through the senior memory sheets and the senior slideshow.

The senior memory sheets have always been a great way for people to express their thoughts and feelings, and share valuable memories with graduating seniors they have gotten to know. Each senior has a white sheet of paper with their name on it. Anyone who wants is able to write a message in colorful pen to that person. Another display of memories, put together by Stephanie Villarreal and Carla Leon, was the senior slideshow. The slideshow was, as always, a culmination of photographs from the lives of the seniors during their time at St. Olaf which made sure it showed more than just the serious side of the graduating students.

After watching the slideshow, writing on memory sheets, and eating their fi ll of chicken, cheese, and fruit, all in attendance sat down to listen to speeches given by Hashim Yonis, Pa Houa Xiong, and Mai T. Vang. The speeches addressed life achievements, goals for the future, and gave advice to students who still have time left at St. Olaf. The night was capped off by a few emotion-fi lled words from Kathy Glampe which told of how much each student had meant to her and wished them all good luck in the future. As the event came to a close everyone was full, happy, and looking forward to graduation and the future, not as the end, but as the start of a new chapter in already successful lives.

On Saturday April 24, Upward Bound held their annual Planning for College seminar. The event was in-tended for freshmen and sophomore high school students and their parents. The students were from Central

and Humboldt High Schools. Desiree Keenan, Associate Dean of Admission kicked off the day with an admis-sions presentation, where she talked to students and parents about St.Olaf and about the admissions process in general.

The event had different workshops that the students and parents participated in. Parents stayed with Upward Bound director Mari Tototzintle where she spoke to them about what TRiO is. While Mari spoke to the parents, the students had their own agenda. The freshman started with an admissions game where they were divided into different teams each representing a different college. Based on fi ctional applications, each team had to decide if they would accept various applicants to their school.

Throughout the day the students rotated to different workshops including a workshop about studying abroad. One of the workshops was postcard writing, where students and their parents had the opportunity to write a postcard letter asking their federal legislators to save TRiO. In their letters, many talked about the life-changing affect that the TRiO programs had on them, and encouraged their legislators to increase funding for the pro-grams. This work is essential because, if funding is not increased, TRiO programs stand to lose millions of dollars in the coming years resulting in the many thousands of students losing access to the vital services these programs provide. (If you are interested in writing a letter in support of TRiO programs, see the article on the front page of this newsletter, “TRiO is Losing Students.”)

After the workshops, with the help of St.Olaf students (including past UB students Arwa, Domonick, Dahir and Awet) the students and parents took a tour of campus. It was a great day for students to learn about the college admissions process as well as do their part in advocating for the TRiO programs.

Upward Bound Students and their Parents do Their Part to Help Save TRiO

By Awet Ghirmai

Save TRiO!These are the words I heard coming desperately from my fellow peers during Minnesota TRiO Day

leadership conference held at Minnesota State University Mankato. Eighteen St. Olaf SSS students traveled to the MN TRiO leadership conference to assist and encourage the middle and high school students to write postcards to their elected offi cials about the importance of TRiO in their lives. As I completed my presentation to the students about transitioning to college, I ran to help them out with writing letters. Many of the students that saw my presentation recognized me and this made it much easier to encourage them to write letters. Even though it was hard to get them all and get them to do what was needed to be done, the other St. Olaf students and I put in a lot of effort to save TRiO not just for us but for the later generations as well. This was a small step in order to accomplish something grand. After hearing from my peers and understanding their feelings regarding TRiO, it made me realize, do people really know our situation with TRiO losing funding?

I agreed with one of my peers after hearing her thoughts on the event. There should be no need for any incentive for the students to write letters to save TRiO. They all should be fully motivated and willing to write the letters. Throughout the day I continued to ask many others to write letters in order to save TRiO. I wrote as many letters as I could. I could feel the passion and commitment of many of my peers to save TRiO. If only they all understood what it meant to save TRiO, then it would be easier. This is why we all must not belittle this situation and take a step towards saving TRiO, for the sake of our future and those to come. Please write!Despite the diffi culties in convincing students to write, I am pleased to report that over 600 postcards were written and sent to our elected offi cials on MN TRiO Day!

On Thursday, April 8, Metropolitan State University in St. Paul, Minnesota, hosted the 2010 MN TRiO Legislative reception. The biennial event is meant to be a way for TRiO professionals and advocates of

TRiO to educate Minnesota’s federal and state legislators about the mission and the incredible success of the TRiO programs in Minnesota and around the country. This year was particularly important because TRiO has again been level-funded in the President’s budget, and thousands of students stand to lose services.

Don Shelby of WCCO-TV was kind enough to volunteer his time as Master of Ceremonies. In addition to welcoming and introducing speakers, Mr. Shelby challenged the federal legislative assistants and the state legislators present to not hide behind the excuse of level-funding as they allow thousands of students across the country to lose access to the services they need in order to be successful in life. He further pushed them to make necessary funding increases for TRiO programs a priority.

Kathy Glampe, St. Olaf College Student Support Services Director and CO-Chair of the MN TRiO Legislative and Education Committee also spoke to the plight of

TRiO programs. She expounded on the thousands of students that are projected to lose services if immediate funding increases are not granted. Mrs. Glampe went on to tell about the genesis of TRiO Programs in the 1960’s as a support program for the federal Pell grant recipients. The two programs were designed to go hand in hand, however, this year funding for Pell grants has increased dramatically while TRiO programs have been left in the dust. These Pell monies will be wasted if TRiO programs, that directly support Pell recipients, are not also funded at higher levels. Mrs. Glampe urged the legislators that were present to follow through with their commitment to this country’s underprivileged by providing them with direct support through TRiO programs, and not simply

throwing money at them.

In addition to Don Shelby and Kathy Glampe, several TRiO alumni and current students spoke eloquently about what the TRiO programs have done for them. Among the speakers was Patrick Tinsley, Humboldt High School, St. Olaf College and Student Support Services class of 2014. Patrick spoke about the struggles of poverty, abuse, and drug use in his home as he was growing up. He was emphatic that without TRiO Upward Bound he would not have made it past high school, let alone be entering St. Olaf College this fall as a fi rst-year student.

Sadly, Patrick’s story was not atypical among the students and alumni at the event. Several alumni, interviewed afterwards, echoed Patrick... without TRiO, they would probably be in jail, dead, or still living in poverty. As the pins that were given out and worn by all boldly stated, TRiO WORKS!

While to date there has been no confi rmation of a funding increase for TRiO programs, the event was undoubtedly a success.

The St. Olaf College Student Support Services (SSS) program is a college retention program funded by the U.S. Department of Education, St. Olaf College, the Hearst Foundation and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. The SSS program is one of three TRIO programs originally funded under the Higher Education Act of 1965 whose objective is to help students overcome class, social and cultural barriers to complete their college education. The SSS program provides services to 160 eligible St. Olaf students annually.
