This schedule is updated from the Springɶ2011ɶScheduleɶofɶCreditɶClasses. Use this AlternateɶSchedule to identify courses that are offered in a con-densed time frame such as accelerated, late start, online and weekend classes. Courses offered in a condensed time frame contain the same content as full semester courses.

We hope that this AlternateɶSchedule is helpful. We would appreciate any recommendations or comments about this schedule or any of the other services that we offer. Send recommendations or comments to [email protected].

AdmissionsYou must be admitted to the college before you can register for credit courses. If the last time you attended Prince George’s Community College (PGCC) was two or more years ago, you must reapply. You can apply online at www.pgcc.edu, or you can pick up an application at Admissions and Records, Bladen Hall, Room 126 on the Largo campus, or at PGCC offices at Andrews Air Force Base, Laurel College Center or University Town Center. Applications should be submitted online or in person to any of the college’s locations. A $25.00 non-refundable application fee must be paid at the time the application is submitted.

Placement TestingFirst-time college students and some transfer students are required by the college to take placement tests. The tests include basic skill assessments in reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. A required orientation/academic advisement session is then scheduled for test results to be interpreted and an appropriate selection of classes made. The testing/advisement requirement applies whether students wish to attend full-time or part-time.

The placement tests are untimed and may be taken individually or all at one time. You may obtain sample tests from the Testing Office, located in Bladen Hall, Room 100, or visit the Testing Office Web page found on the College’s website. Advisors recommend that you study the samples prior to taking the actual examinations.

NOTE: Students must present a picture ID in order to enter the Testing Center.

Academic AdvisingAdvisers are located in Bladen Hall, Room 124. No appointment is needed. Advisers also are available at the college’s other three loca-tions: Andrews Air Force Base, Laurel College Center and University Town Center.

Student ID CardsAll credit students are required to obtain a PGCC Student ID Card. This photo Id card is provided free of charge and is to be worn on all of the college’s campuses. Students who already have an ID card should visit the library or the Office of Admissions & Records on the Largo Campus, or the administrative offices on any of the three extension sites, to have their cards validated for the current term.

New ID cards may be obtained from the Largo Campus library or Office of Admissions & Records, B126, during the following hours: Monday - Thursday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. (Library ONLY). Extension sites have different hours, so check with them before going there to get an ID card.

Paying for ClassesPayment due dates are enforced.

Payment Options:• In person, using cash, personal check, money order,

employer voucher, DC Government voucher, or credit cards (MasterCard, Discover, or VISA).

If you are re-registering after being dropped for nonpayment, you must pay your tuition the same day you re-register.

Canceling Your RegistrationIf you decide not to attend a late-starting class at PGCC, you must formally drop the course before it begins or by the deadlines below to avoid payment of tuition and fees. This is true regardless of whether or not you attend the class. The College cancels registrations for nonpay-ment ONLY for registrations occurring January 26, 2011 or earlier. If you register after that date and later decide you do not want to take the course, it is your responsibility to formally drop it by the appropriate deadline or by the first day of the class in question.

5-week classes: two days after the first class meeting

Classes less than 5 weeks long: First day of class

Weekenders: Thursday following the first class weekend

Financial AidFinancial aid awarded by PGCC consists of federal grants and loans, scholarships from a variety of sources, and work-study opportunities.

All applications and supporting documents for the determination of a financial aid award must be submitted as early as possible to the Financial Aid Office, located in Bladen Hall, Room 121. Missing or incomplete paperwork will delay the determination of financial aid eligibility. Students whose eligibility determination is delayed should be prepared to pay all tuition and fees themselves. Such payments may later be reimbursed once financial aid is authorized.

If your financial aid has been processed, you should see the amount of aid for which you are eligible printed on your bill as Financial Aid Awarded. If you believe you have financial aid that does not appear on your bill, please contact the Financial Aid Office, located in Bladen Hall, Room 121 before you make payment.

General Information

What is the Weekend College? The Weekend College serves the needs of those who might not otherwise be able to participate in college credit study during the week. It offers busy adults a wide variety of courses in a weekend format.

What are the Weekend Options?A number of options or course formats are available to students. In most instances, students will make their selection of course format on the basis of time schedule alone. However, a growing number of students are beginning to make their selection on the basis of their preferred learning style. For instance, courses offered in an intensive format on three weekends usually attract students who enjoy an active role and thrive on class discussion and participation. On the other hand, courses offered for three hours on 14 consecutive Saturdays or Sundays tend to attract students who may enjoy a more moderate pace. Regardless of format or learning style, the Weekend College offers quality instruction on a convenient schedule.

How many courses may a student take in the Weekend College?A student may take two or three courses per semester depending upon the schedule option. For instance, a student may choose to take courses sequentially and enroll for courses that meet normally on three alternating weekends. The three-weekend (Friday evening/all day Saturday) schedule enables a student to sequence three courses within one semester. As an alternate method, a student may choose to take two courses concurrently by enrolling for a course on Saturday mornings and a second course on Saturday afternoons or registering for one of our Sunday courses. These courses generally meet three hours for 14 class sessions; see the schedule for exceptions. For more information, call the Weekend College office at 301-322-0785.Registration for most weekend courses is cut off some time prior to the beginning of each class so that the students who are registered for the course have enough time to receive an orientation letter from the instructor, purchase their textbooks, and complete any initial assignments that might be due at the first class meeting. Information will be sent to the student’s address on record. If you do not receive an orientation letter and/or syllabus from your instructor a week before your course begins, call the department to get the information.

Weekend classes do not meet April 18-24 during the college’s scheduled Spring Break. Classes will resume the following weekend.

What Are Online Courses?Students who are computer literate and have access to a computer and the Internet may want to consider taking online courses at Prince George’s Community College (PGCC). Online courses are a convenient way to earn college credit. The computer becomes the classroom. Students can work more independently and set their learning hours to fit their per-sonal schedules. Students communicate with their instructor and fellow classmates via the Internet using Blackboard, PGCC’s online classroom. Blackboard offers a password-protected online classroom with access to e-mail, course content, chat, discussion board, and other course tools. Students can use their own computer at home or work, or use a computer at the college’s computer center to conduct course communications. For more information, visit www.pgcconline.com, call 301-322-0463 or e-mail [email protected].
