There are elements of the standards that require the contractor to provide employer specific information regarding policy and procedures as well as some hands on training on specific equipment. All subjects are covered at the orientation level. Contractors are required to take this training to receive a C-STOP badge to enter the plants of Lion Oil, Chemtura, El Dorado Chemical, DuPont, Albemarle, Entegra, Clean Harbors, Tetra, Georgia Pacific. These companies also accept similar contractor safety orientation programs such as Basic Orientation Plus recognized by the Association of Reciprocal Safety Council within the past 12 months. The site-specific training for some of these plants is also offered. Two day advance registration is required or a late registration fee is charged. CERTIFIED FIBER OPTICS TRAINING WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Current fiber optics technicians and specialists seeking certification

Current fiber workers who want to expand their technical knowledge

People who plan to enter the fiber optics field

FIBER OPTIC ASSOCIATION APPROVED TRAINING

The SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, in partnership with BDI DataLynk (FOA Approved School # 208), will

begin offering certified fiber optics training in the Spring of 2013. FOA certifications are widely respected for their

comprehensive coverage of the knowledge, skills and abilities course members need, a result of the FOA having access to

the most experienced and knowledgeable people in fiber optics to help develop FOA programs. Schools cover subjects

appropriate to the course description, providing proper course materials and FOA-certified instructors.

Certified Fiber Optics Technician Course (CFOT)

Monday-Wednesday, April 15-17 from 8 am - 5 pm (lunch is on your own)

Cost: $700 (Fee includes course materials and certification exam)

Location: SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, Room 121

This introductory 3-day fiber optic tech course is designed for anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optic

Technician. This Fiber Optic Training combines theory and 85% hands-on activities to prepare the student to take the

CFOT (Certified Fiber Optic Technician) test that is sanctioned by the FOA (Fiber Optics Association) and given and

graded the final class day. This course also introduces the student to industry standards governing FTTD (Fiber To The

Desk), FTTH (Fiber To The Home), K-12 (Schools), and explains Zone Vs. Distribution Cabling. Students will learn how to

identify fiber types, recognize various connectors used in fiber installation; and install, terminate, splice, and properly

test installed fiber cable to existing standards. This program explores the history and future of fiber optics and fiber

optics capabilities, and cost of installation. Anyone interested in becoming a Certified Fiber Optics Technician should

attend this class. Upon successful completion, this program is recognized for BICSI CECs (Continuing Education Credits):

Certified Fiber Optics Specialist in Testing and Maintenance (CFOS/T)

Thursday-Friday, April 18-19 from 8 a.m. - 5 pm (lunch is on your own)

Cost: $700 (Fee includes course materials and certification exam)

Location: SouthArk Center for Workforce Development, Room 121

Course fee includes study materials, CD, and textbook: FOA Reference Guide to Fiber Optics by Jim Hayes.

This 2-day (16-hour) program is designed to offer specialist fiber optics training to anyone involved with the testing and

maintenance of fiber optics networks. This advanced fiber optics training is strictly a practical course, but includes more

background information than is typical in basic courses to allow the student to understand what they are testing and

how to troubleshoot problems in long-haul and short-haul fiber optics networks. One of the most important points of

the program is to teach current day technology. Too many courses teach obsolete theory and practice, out of obsolete

textbooks! This course will teach differences between applications (telco/CATV/LAN, etc.) so the student can

Page 11: Spring 2013 Corporate Training Guide

10 | P a g e ( 8 7 0 ) 8 6 4 - 7 1 9 2 c e @ s o u t h a r k . e d u 3 6 9 8 E . M a i n

intelligently work in today's fiber optics cable environment. Another focal point in the program is to offer a general,

easy to understand approach to fiber optics testing standards. We attempt to explain the variety of testing standards,

equipment and technological approaches used in fiber network testing and how to choose among them. Many courses

are criticized because they are too specific or prejudiced to one application, technology or manufacturer. We explore

the overall spectrum of testing and maintenance of fiber optics networks and strive to provide a better comfort level for

our students with regards to testing and maintenance of both single mode and multi mode fiber optics networks.

Subject matter includes a detailed study of ANSI/TIA/EIA-526-14A, OTDR Fundamentals and Uses, OTDR Vs. Insertion

Loss Testing, Return Loss Testing, and Proper Maintenance of High-Performance Fiber Networks. The Certified Fiber

Optics Specialist/Testing Exam is given and graded the final day of class. Course fee includes all study materials,

consumables, manuals, and PC-Based OTDR Simulator. Program provides for 75% hands-on activities.

Prerequisites: FOA CFOT Course or any other Formal Fiber Optics Training Course within previous 6 months, or 1 Year

Fiber Optics Related Experience.

Fundamentals of 5 Dynamics Thursday, February 28 from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm Instructor: David Zweig, VP, Consulting Services, 5 Dynamics Limited to 20 students 5 Dynamics is a proprietary method—a framework in the sense that Six Sigma is a framework—for matching the natural energies of people with their work and with each other, to achieve better business results, engagement, and personal satisfaction. Employees will use more of their latent talents, and spend less time, effort, and focus on personality (a sinkhole for profits) and more on productivity. By identifying Dynamics, what a project or task needs at any given moment, employees learn to align those Dynamics with their own Energies, the ways in which people prefer to get things done, collaborate, and learn. Clearly focused on the work and complementing each other’s strengths, employees increase the return and decrease the waste and friction of the “people side” of your operations. 5 Dynamics has proven effective in a wide variety of industries, including hospitals and healthcare, insurance, consumer products, enterprise software, hardware, pharmaceuticals, biotech, consumer internet and social networking sites, and many more. About the instructor: A graduate of Yale College and Harvard Business School, David Zweig is the co-author of Money for Nothing: How CEOs and Boards are Bankrupting America. Former President of 5 Dynamics, Zweig led the team that architected and developed their software application as well as creating a unique system of dyadic reporting between individuals.
