The Anacostia Watershed Society has partnered with Rock View this year to educate our students in ways we impact our community, environment, and how we can contribute our time, energy and voice to lessening the impact. The Anacostia Watershed Society has one ambition - they want the Anacostia River, the other river flowing through our nation’s capital, to be a clean and healthy place to live and visit once more. Third grade students have been participating with them this year, and they wanted to give back. As a result, the third grade team created a bookmark business. Students created bookmarks earlier in the year to sell and to give the proceeds to AWS, but we thought since we were so close to Earth Day, we could make more, sell more, and give more to them! Those of you who participated in the Earth Day clean up saw firsthand how the Anacostia River needs our help, and every little bit counts. We sold these magnificent bookmarks with seeds last week in the morning in front of the office and the cafeteria. All third grade students took part in this business venture/fundraiser in the form of sales, marketing, advertising, packaging, manufacturing and creating our products. They even had to submit job applications for the department they wanted to work for and explain why they thought they would be a good fit for the job. This business venture really took off. In just five days, we raised $469 (the total keeps growing!). WE ARE SO PROUD OF ALL OUR THIRD GRADERS! Not only did our students learn how to run an authentic business, but they also saw firsthand how hard work, effort, persistence, collaboration, and original thinking can truly make a difference in the business world. This activity served as a great synergy between our Science and Social Studies curriculums too. Many thanks to our parent volunteers who gave their time to help our worthy cause. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. Third Grade Business Supporting the Anacostia Watershed - A Big Hit at Rock View!!!

Try to these problems at home!

Turkey'Time

Start out simple... Julia Child was roasting a turkey. It has been out of the oven for 20 minutes. The turkey was roasting for 4 hours and 15 minutes. The oven was preheated for 10 minutes. If it is 5:00 now, then what time did Julia put the turkey in the oven?

Picture'ItNow try to work this out... A"picture that measures 12 cm by 18 cm is enlarged to 4 times its area. What are the new dimensions?

Surprise,'Surprise

This will really challenge you...!"Extravagant Ellie and Thrifty Tanya each have bank accounts. Ellie has $500 and Tanya has $200.  Ellie withdraws $15 each weekend while Tanya deposits $12. At the end of 13 weeks, what is the difference in their bank accounts? Solve this algebraically. Can you find a week when there is only a $3 difference? Hint: It is before the 13th week.

Practice! Practice! Practice!Keep practicing multiplication and division facts!  It’s a tough challenge, but it is
