thank you dr. pellaton The Cayucos Land Conservancy is honored to claim Dr. Evelyn Pellaton not only as a founding member, but also as a founding Board member. “Evie” has been continually contributing her leadership, encouragement, sense of humor, and many other talents to the Cayucos community for over 30 years. Her list of accomplishments exceeds the space of this entire newsletter but here are a few examples.
After retiring as Cal Poly Assistant Director of Athletics —and while active in the Naval Reserve, several local bands and other organizations —Evie served on the Cayucos Citizens Advisory Council, two years as President. In 1991 Evie was elected Cayucos Citizen of the Year, and in 1992 founded Friends of the Cayucos Library. During this time, Dr. Pellaton was a crucial player in the conservation of the Estero Bluffs and the founding of the Cayucos Land Conservancy, always cheerfully applying her leadership skills and determination. Since then, Evie was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletic Hall of Fame, and continues to volunteer, play drums, swim, walk her dogs, and actively sup-port the armed services, especially women. Watch for her around Cayucos and tell her “thanks” again.
monitoring property CLC currently holds two easements: Estero Bluffs and San Geronimo Ranch. The purpose of these easements is to enforce certain restrictions to assure that the property remains in a particular condition. The easement for Estero Bluffs focuses on the visual resources, in particular maintaining the native prairie grassland and ensuring that nothing obstructs the views. In the case of San Geronimo, the easement requires that the property continue to be a working ranch and that the property retain its agricultural character forever. In order to ensure compliance with the easement restrictions, CLC conducts annual monitoring. During the monitoring, the property is visually inspected and results are compared to an established baseline. The results of the monitoring are put into a written report CLC saves and which is shared with the property owners. The report also offers suggestions of changes needed to enforce easement restrictions. For instance, on Estero Bluffs there is sometimes an encroachment of coastal shrubs that interfere with the health of the prairie grassland. In that case, CLC may recommend to State Parks, the property owner, that certain remedial steps be taken, such as spraying, weed abatement, etc. This monitoring allows CLC to participate in the management of the property. Monitoring is an important part of CLC’s goal of preserving a greenbelt around Cayucos. It enables the protection of the beautiful views around our town and is a vital piece of the partnership we have with property owners.

president'smessage As the newly elected CLC President, I am so pleased to welcome all new and renewing members. Your donations help us accomplish our mission of creating a greenbelt around our special place here in Cayucos. The Board held a strategic planning meeting in January and reviewed and updated our goals. What would we like to accomplish by 2020? Our eyes are set on accreditation by the Land Trust Alliance, acquiring additional easements, owning a majority of the hillside lots, and increasing our Endowment Fund. In the coming year we will continue with our coastal walk program, the San Geronimo Creek restoration, access at Estero Bluffs, hillside lot purchases, participation in community events, the Harmony Headlands volunteer program, and land management oversight. As you can see we are an active organization. We are always seeking and welcome volunteers to help with our land conservation objectives. There is much to do! Please check out our website at cayucoslandconservancy.org and contact us at [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering. Thanks for all of your support and enjoy Springtime in our beautiful area.

hillside lotsEvery few years, the County of San Luis Obispo divests itself of lots it has acquired through tax default. Some of these lots lie within the antiquated subdivisions in the hills surround Cayucos. This year, CLC purchased 48 parcels from the County, totaling approximately 83 lots. As always CLC is continually acquiring lots from willing sellers and donors, expanding the greenbelt around the town.
highway one pulloutsA recent Newsletter told about the establishment of pull-outs on Highway One just north of Cayucos. This was a 10-year project but was well worth the wait. On any day, these pull-outs are serving their purpose —allowing people access to the beautiful bluffs and providing a beautiful scenic stop-over for travelers, surfers, and locals. So next time you are traveling north, take a minute to pull over, stop, and enjoy the natural beautiful of this area. It is a sight not to be missed.
check your labelQUESTION: When is a mailing label not just a name and address? ANSWER: When it’s a CLC Newsletter mailing label. That’s right. The Newsletter label also contains some important information —the expiration date for your CLC membership.
It’s so easy to forget when membership dues should be paid. That’s why our Board of Directors added this helpful information to your label so all of our members can keep current. So please take a second right now to check and see if it’s time to renew your CLC membership. And if it is, well, you know what to do. Thanks very much in advance.
