2 THE BULLETIN FALL 2014

Welcome back to another year of high school athletics. If you haven’t coached before, I hope you will consider getting involved. If you’re a returningcoach, thank you for your continuing leadership.

As we head into a new school year, OFSAA will be moving forward with a new strategic plan. The OFSAA Executive Council undertook the #}%/?%!$/$"#Y~#it in June. One of the steps in the process was tosolicit feedback from people involved in schoolsport including teacher-coaches, association volunteers, school administrators, and directors of education.

The last time the organization developed a strategic plan was in 2010.Z!%[!!"$%?"#&%$#Y#&;!$?#%be more of a “business as usual” approach as the school sport environment was more settled. The scenario was quite different this time around, as the feedback and analysis indicated that times are changing and there are new challenges and opportunities in school sport and education.

The surveys presented some interesting results. Some of the common themes, opportunities, and challenges that came forward were:

A need for coach training opportunities Recruitment of new teachers into coaching roles Athletic director training A need to provide student leadership development Declining enrolment Impact of club sport on high school sport Attracting participants – challenges with the growth of club sport, sport

specialization, and changing demographics Creating more opportunities for high school-trained athletes Review sports/championships offered at the OFSAA level Financial pressures, particularly on school athletic programs

While this is not an exhaustive list, it does provide some of the more frequent responses.

Changing times create new opportunities and compel an organization to review its business. This is a healthy and necessary approach to evolve an organization, and to ensure a proactive approach. For OFSAA, the surveys #Y# ! ?%$ ?/% ?$ ! # % ##$$# ! "strategic plan which will help school sport at all levels.

I hope you have an enjoyable year, and whether you are involved in sport atyour school or not, please remember the important role that coaches play in the education of students.

A Word from Doug Gellatly, OFSAA Executive Director

In Remembrance . . .On July 23rd, 2014, Don Young passed away. He taught physical education in the London area for 35 years, many of them at SaundersS.S., and coached many athletes throughout his career. Don was a goodfriend of OFSAA, serving on committees, hosting championships, and supporting school sport in any way he could. As a fellow teacher stated, “he was a dedicated teacher and coach and a wonderful role model for students as well as for his fellow teachers. He will be missed”. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.

Curtis was also involved in other areas of school life including several fundraisers, the housesystem, and the athletics club. In the community he volunteered as a boys’ soccer coach and at a hockey camp. He applied the skills he learned through sport to his academic studies also, and was on the honour roll throughout high school. To quote his coach, “Curtisrepresents the ‘true ideals’ of a student-athlete”. We wish him well as he pursues a kinesiology program at university.

Dealing with Parents and Elite Athletes – The Scholarship MythReprinted with permission from NFHS. Story by Anna Wilson, originally published in April 14 edition of High School Today magazine

There is only one LeBron James and only one Serena Williams. However, that fact doesn’t deter numerous young athletes fromimmersing themselves in a sport with the hope of becoming an athlete.

Often with the pressure from their parents, these athletes devote a great deal of time and money to receiving recognitionand attaining a college scholarship. This specialization is sometimes at odds with an education-based athletic program. And it’s an issue high school administrators and coaches have to deal with more and more each year.

At last year’s NFHS Summer Meeting in Denver, Colorado, twostate association executive directors addressed the issue duringa workshop entitled, “Dealing with Parents and Elite Athletes: The Scholarship Myth.” Harold Slemmer and Rhonda Blanford-Green covered a number of issues for athletes and parents toconsider in the pursuit of athletic scholarships.

Slemmer, executive director of the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) and NFHS president for the 2013-14 schoolyear, presented the audience with common myths aboutscholarships, uncovering the truth behind each myth.

With athletes traveling around the country showcasing their talents, parents are there to support their children, often to the detriment of their grades. Slemmer noted that parents may think that their son’s or daughter’s talent alone will get them a college scholarship, despite a poor report card, but that’s not true.

“Poor grades turn off a coach’s interest more quickly than any other factor,” Slemmer said. “Nearly every school has minimum grade requirements, which college coaches must adhere to.No matter how good an athlete a student is, he or she can’t getaround the minimum grade levels.”

Parents play a large role in an athlete’s life. They are there to support their child’s ambitions. They do small things such as driving to and from practice. But, some parents have become?%&%??%U;%"%&[}&%their child – pressure.

“(Parents) force their children to specialize in one sport. It becomes a major focus of their lives. We plant a seed and therewill become problems,” Slemmer said. “We have to be carefulnot to make them think they have succeeded at that level inlife. It’s just a part of life it’s not the main reason why they exist. Growing up academically and emotionally is more important.”

As adults, parents have to work with their children, guidingthem along the way, which can start at a young age. Athletics &&%?Y&/%&!#$}$"!!Uyounger, which is why Slemmer suggests that parents are realistic about the athletic ability of their children.

“Parents think their kids are elite right out of sixth and seventh [#$!!UY#%!U$[%%#$!Uthink. Perhaps that becomes more realistic to them the older they get,” he said. “Because an athlete specializes in onesport, they play year-round and that makes them think they are elite. That’s not necessarily true. I look at the ones that are &/%>!U##YU!}[%!&$?

that most athletes don’t have. There’s only one sprinkle outthere in any school. There isn’t an abundance (of them).”

Blanford-Green, executive director of the Nebraska SchoolActivities Association (NSAA), agrees that there’s a small percentage of elite athletes across the country.

“I would say maybe two per cent of all high school athletesare elite. Then, you have good athletes, and then, you havekids that are just out there participating. That’s what our goal should be as high school associations. We should provide that platform,” she said. “I think there are two percent (of eliteathletes), but 75 per cent of the parents think that their kids are!$>!U}$$!$U$"!!&%&comes in.”

!!$Y#[!&!$U%[[$!U#Y#U%#$%[!U&$#%$#organizations. Because of the line drawn between thoseoutside organizations and high school athletics, Blanford-Green believes there is a competition between the two aspects of anathlete’s life.

She wants to close the gap between the two areas, which wasthe main focus of her presentation at the summer meeting.

“It used to be us versus them, but now, even in smallcommunities, it is in the best interest for the state associationsto build relationships with those outside groups. They have the common mindset of how they can serve the kids,” Blanford-Green said. “Our primary focus should be the best interest of the students and building collaborative relationships. Parentsshould be aware of all the different arms that are touching their kids and not make it a competition.”

While striving to become an elite athlete can be important, parents and their children can’t overlook the ultimate goal of being in high school. Striving for an education and succeeding in the classroom, like Slemmer mentioned, is of utmostimportance when preparing for the future.

Scholarships help reward those who have excelled inacademics as well as athletics, but as the parent of two athletes, Blanford-Green believes that athletc scholarships are a bonus in the long run.

“If a student receives a scholarship, it’s just icing on the cake. I would say that for the majority of the people that ive been incontact with pre-high school and high school education, we all know that if our kids get some kind of scholarship, it’s justa pat on the back for a job well done, but it’s not why our kidsparticipate,” she said. “You have to build a well-rounded kid,not only athletically but educationally, to maximize the dollarsthat will help for higher education.”

Blanford-Green believes that an athlete has to be able tobalance a life in athletics, as well as an eduation. They have toprioritize and keep education as an important focus. This canbe accomplished with the correct guidance.

)&%?$%?/#%$#&$#[#&Putting as much importance on the educational factors as the athletic or activity factors is key,” she said. “It’s all about guidance and balancing a life for athletics and education.”

Guest speaker Delby Powless, former professional lacrosse player and former coach of Hagersville, shared hispositive message of how to achieve success. This included examples from his own life and how heovercame both athletic and academic challenges.

Although Hagersville wasn’t able to replicate their past success, it was their neighbours from McKinnon Park SS(SOSSA) who found themselves in the gold medal gameagainst a strong team from St. Stephens SS (LOSSA). A very evenly matched game ended in a one point victory for McKinnon Park, who may have got the edge they needed thanks to the support of their fans, who came outto cheer their team to victory.

The OFSAA 2014 Boys’ AAA/AAAA Field Lacrosse Festival expanded to a three-day event as a result of the growth inthe number of teams and safety of the athletes. The tournament saw a number of “newer” programs starting to emerge and close the gap with long-time powerhouse schools. This included a very excited host team gaining a win over last year’s gold medallists from Msgr. Paul Dwyer. After two days of competition, the teams attended the festival banquet, which not only provided a gourmet meal but also included a Native dance demonstration and educated participants about the history of lacrosse.

At the end of the competition, St. Michael’s College (CISAA) found their way back into the gold medal game, this time facing the top seed from Assumption College (CWOSSA). This match did not disappoint and for the second time inthree years the gold medal needed to be decided in overtime. Boys’ Rugby returned to the Durham area with boththe A/AA and AAA/AAAA Championships. ConvenorsGeorge Burford and Ethan Markham and their teamof volunteers did an outstanding job in showcasing theprovince’s most exciting rugby programs. This includedtaking on the huge challenge of organizing a banquetfor over 1000 attendees, most of which being hungry rugby players. However, the banquet went off withouta hitch as students were fed and presenters providedwords of encouragement and inspiration. This includedthe presentation of the Leadership in School Sport Awardto Ian Gilbride (Eastdale CVI) for the A/AA event andto an unknowing George Burford (Pine Ridge SS) for the AAA/AAAA. Ian, a teacher-coach for 25 years, hasbeen responsible for getting rugby programs stated andmentoring many young coaches at multiple schools inthe LOSAA area. In addition to rugby, Ian has coachedfootball, hockey and golf and been on the organizingcommittee of three OFSAA Championships. George hasalso dedicated 25 years to coaching within the school setting, including football, volleyball, and of course rugby. George has also volunteered on the LOSSA executive, convened LOSSA rugby, and been involved in hostingmultiple OFSAA championships.

The strength and depth of competition continues to grow in boys’ rugby and particularly in the A/AA event. Defending champions and number one seeded BarrieCentral (GBSSA) looked prepared to take home another OFSAA title. However, they may have met their matchwhen number six seeded Erin DHS demonstratedjust how far their program has come in recent years, snatching gold from the long-time rugby powerhouse.

OFSAA Boys’ AA SoccerLeamington June 5-7

A big thank you must be extendedto Jim Kittl and his crew at Cardinal Carter SS (SWOSSAA) for picking up this championship on short notice in September. The well-organized team worked hard toensure a positive experience for everyone visiting the tomato capital of Canada in Leamington. Kicking the championship off was the tournament banquet, whichallowed the teams to meet each other andshare a meal at the Leamington RomaClub. The Leadership in School SportAward was presented to Mark Renaudof Cardinal Carter SS. Mark has beencoaching for over 26 years in a variety of sports including football, baseball, basketball, volleyball, badminton, and golf. He is always willing to help coach where needed and has also volunteered his time to convening junior boys football in SWOSSAA for over 10 years.

Under sunny skies, the tournament kicked-off the next day with a number of closely contested matches, leaving much to be decided in the group stage until day two. The returning champions, St. Martin SS (ROPSSAA), found their back into the gold medal game, this time facing a tough team from ESP Louis Riel (NCSSAA). However, the high scoring Mustangs proved too much tallying four

goals to win the championship 4-1 and repeat as OFSAA Champions.
