UPBEAT & UNBEATABLE“You are as happy as you choose to be”. This simple and impossible-to-dispute advice for making the most of any situation speaks directly to our mindset as we embarked on designing the Spring ’14 collection.

Spring ‘14 is stylistically and attitudinally inspired by the mid to late 50s, a period so energetic, pro- ductive and optimistic that it ushered in rocket ships, life-changing synthetics and the early marriage of sleek form and high function. The finer side of 50s design introduced us to organic shapes, simple but clever style, space-age notions, abstract patterns and the concept of multi-functionalism.

Merging new ideas, materials and sensibilities with the continuity of the past is at the heart of the collection. These clothes have roots in what we love from the 50s while still being very contemporary. They are designed for a rich life, not a rich lifestyle, for a life of daily exuberance, exploration and adventure and an evolving awareness of doing things the right way.

Outdoor is quickly defining the modern wardrobe. It leads the clothing industry in both functional and performance attributes. It produces clothing of the highest quality, best durability and longest lasting value. Outdoor leads the textile industry in addressing sustainability and is leading the world in learning to reduce the environmental impact of all that we produce. What outdoor has been lacking, however, is a confident sense of style.

Our men’s line is subtly evolving to more precise, slightly trimmer fits. We’ve discovered that looking right in your clothes just feels better and can be accomplished without working too hard or being overly self-conscious. We’re keenly attuned to the nuance of collars, plackets, cuffs, pockets and stitching as the key signals of iconic and contemporary style. We’re using a lot of horizontal details in yarn-dyed stripes, cross body seams and colour blocking. We’re enjoying the return of ringers and henleys and pockets on knit polos and tees. We’re happy to report that men are fully embracing stretch and softness in fabrics.

Our women’s line features an abundance of dresses and skirts covering an unprecedented range of silhouettes, lengths, weights, textures and patterns. We’re showing a profusion of stripes that play as well with our prints as they do with solids. Color blocking and horizontal yarn-dyes are fresh and quirky. We’re seeing renewed interest in woven shirts, notably sleeveless styles that feel both retro and modern. We’re introducing several new pants and shorts that do it all – modern, stylish, active and travel-worthy. As pants get slightly trimmer (made comfortably possible with stretchier fabrics), the silhouettes on top are looser and rounded. Life is a balance, after all.

We’ve named this season ‘Upbeat and Unbeatable.’ We invite you to find out why.
