Chris Craddock: One Man

Impresario

Award-winning actor/playwright Chris Craddock explodes the conventions of the theatrical monologue in this collection of three hilarious, poignant, feverishly inventive and (sometimes literally) electric solo stage pieces.

In Public Speaking, an amoral lifestyle guru finds his message of guilt-free self-interest tested when his sex-addicted daughter is kidnapped by a pair of dangerous thugs.

In Porn Star, a mousy small-town librarian is titillated to learn that she has unwittingly become an internet sensation thanks to an X-rated viral video starring her and her ex-boyfriend (much to the horror of her mother, a family-values right-wing politician).

And in the astonishing Moving Along, Craddock ricochets wildly through the story of his own life—through childhood traumas, adolescent tragedies, adult triumphs, and frequent philosophical tangents.

CHRIS CRADDOCK is an Edmonton-based Actor/Producer/Writer. He has been recognized in Canada with four Sterling Awards, two Dora Mavor Moore Awards and multiple AMPIA award nominations for his film and TV work. His previous play collection for teens, Naked at School, won an Alberta Book Award.

Karen Hofmann talks about the BC landscape

AFTER ALICEby Karen Hofmann

Having escaped the place in her youth, retired professor Sidonie von Täler returns to her ancestral Okanagan valley orchards still very much in the shadow of her deceased older sister Alice.

As she sifts through the detritus of her family history, Sidonie is haunted by memories of trauma and triumph in equal measure, and must reconcile past and present while reconnecting with the people she left behind.

Karen Hofmann’s debut novel blends a poetic sensibility with issues of land stewardship, social stratification and colonialism. Her eye for period detail and characterization is reminiscent of Margaret Atwood’s The Blind Assassin or Margaret Laurence’s The Stone Angel, while her lyrical realization of bygone B.C. pastoralia recalls the work of George Bowering.

“After Alice is a poignant exploration of the mysteri-ous underworld of memory and the capricious expan-sion and contraction of time. Karen Hofmann has a compelling curiosity about people – their secrets, their sorrows, their strength, and their compromised ideas of love. She has penned a rich novel with big heart.”—ANGIE ABDOU, author of The Bone Cage and The Canterbury Trail

KAREN HOFMANN lives in Kamloops, B.C. She has been published in Arc, Prairie Fire, The Malahat Review, and The Fiddlehead. Her book Water Strider was shortlisted for the Dorothy Livesay Prize at the 2009 BC Book Awards, and her story “The Burgess Shale” was shortlisted at the 2012 CBC Short Fiction Contest. After Alice is her first novel.

Hiromi reflects on the impact Chorus has had over the past 20 years

CHORUS OF MUSHROOMS:20TH ANNIVERSARY EDITIONby Hiromi Goto

Hiromi Goto’s debut novel has become a Canadian classic. The winner of the 1995 Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book (Canada and Caribbean Region) and co-winner of the Canada-Japan Book Award, it is a powerful narrative of three generations of Japanese Canadian women on the Canadian prairies.

Funny, scandalous, and melancholic all at once, this superlative narrative is filled with echoes and retellings, memories and Japanese folk tales. From The Tale of Genji to the Calgary Stampede, from the sharing of recipes to hitchhiking the Trans-Canada highway, it weaves a story that slides between histories, countries and desire. It is a timeless exploration of immigration and belonging.

This twentieth anniversary reprinting of the landmark novel includes an Afterword by Larissa Lai (When Fox is a Thousand, Salt Fish Girl) and an interview with the author.

“Such a love for words is evident in Chorus of Mushrooms, which contains passages of breathtaking beauty.”—GLOBE AND MAIL

“Hiromi Goto, a Japanese-Canadian writer, has written a masterpiece of our times … The readability of the text is attributable to the author’s craftsmanship, and one feels like reading it over and over again.”—THE HERALD (HARARE, ZIMBABWE)

HIROMI GOTO is a Vancouver, B.C. fiction writer, cultural critic, arts advocate, youth organizer, and teacher of creative writing. Her first novel, Chorus of Mushrooms, received the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book (Caribbean and Canada) and was co-winner of the Canada-Japan Book Award.

Garry Ryan passes on some war stories

TWO BLACKBIRDSby Garry Ryan

The fires of the Second World War are beginning to burn down, but legendary Canadian aviatrix Sharon Lacey is not out of danger just yet. Complications enter the young ace’s life as deep-seated racial and class prejudice, potential fifth columnists and even her own killer code of honour threaten her hard-fought reputation, while a new and wonderful secret might also prove to be her undoing.

Meanwhile, across the Channel in Fortress Europe, new weapons have started rolling off Nazi production lines, and the characteristic buzz of the deadly V-1 flying bomb fills the air.

In the second act of his Calgary Herald-bestselling Blackbirds trilogy, Garry Ryan pits his intrepid heroine against an array of deadly new foes and challenges, proving that in war the enemy may wear the same uniform as your own.

GARRY RYAN lives in Calgary, Alberta. He received a B.Ed. and a diploma in Educational Psychology from the University of Calgary, and taught English and Creative Writing to junior high and high school students until his retirement in 2009. NeWest Press released the first part of his Second World War adventure trilogy Blackbirds in 2012.

D.B. Carew delves into the mind of a killer.

THE KILLER TRAILby D.B. Carew

When Vancouver psychiatric social worker Chris Ryder spots an abandoned cell phone during his afternoon jog, the innocent discovery drags him into the psychotic games of Ray Owens, a former patient at the centre of a high-profile kidnapping and murder case.

As the violence increases, Owens’ intricate web of lies threatens to ensnare the lives of Ryder’s family and friends, including his old flame Doctor Stephanie Rowe and RCMP Sergeant Brandon Ryan. Now if Ryder is to survive, he must examine the darkness in his own soul as he walks the killer trail.

Shortlisted for the 2013 Debut Dagger Award by the Crime Writers Association, D.B. Carew’s first novel is a gripping thriller that approaches crime with a clinical precision.

“One clever criminal plus one broken social worker equals one hell of a smooth breakout novel from D.B. Carew. The Killer Trail is an intense psychological thriller that explores the pathologies of the hero and the villain in equal measure, driving them head on into each other in a bold twist of an ending.”—ROBIN SPANOAuthor of Death’s Last Run

D.B. CAREW has his masters degree in social work from Dalhousie University and currently works at a forensic psychiatric hospital in Port Coquitlam, B.C. An avid runner, he is a member of the Crime Writers of Canada and the Federation of B.C. Writers. The Killer Trail is his first novel.
