“A family is a place where principles are hammered and honed on the anvil

of everyday living.”

—CHARLES R. SWINDOLL

Dear Family,

When our kids were little, they loved to play superheroes. Oddly, they found that if they put their tighty-whitie underwear on their head and used the leg holes for the eye holes, they magically transformed into superheroes. While we didn’t encourage underwear as preferred superhero attire, we did believe in letting our kids fi nd and discover new ways to play.

As we look at this season’s spectacular list, we’re thrilled to see that we’re still fi nding new ways to explore, play, and discover our inner superhero. We also love that we’re fi nding meaningful stories to read with our children. We’re glad that we’re exploring the miraculous change between tweens to teens for girls while we celebrate what it means to be a mother and how a community can strengthen that most noble calling. We continue to be curious how our global confl icts and cookies can strengthen the ties between parent and child. We’re laughing at the humor books created by Bob Hope’s chief joke writer, and we’re exploring how to create better associations and relationships. We love learning new beauty, cooking, and gardening secrets. And, of course, we never stop fi guring out how to tell you how awesome you are—523 ways, exactly! Yes, you are awesome and don’t forget it!

We propose that 2016 be the year of play. Play hard with your family and enjoy the books that help make families just a little bit better and happier. Now, where’s my super suit?

Let’s talk family,

Christopher and Michele Robbins

When you need to slip a distress message to your sidekick, there’s nothing better than a secret message cake. Of course, whether or not your sidekick can even read is an entirely different matter. You did ask about that in the interview, didn’t you?

1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line 4 square pans with parchment paper leaving 2 inches on each end to hang over the sides.

2 Make cake according to directions and add 4-5 drops of paste food coloring and stir to blend. Divide batter evenly between 3 pans (you will use the 4th pan lat-er) fi lling ¾ full. There may be left over batter.

Once the cakes have completely cooled, trim off the top slightly to form a fl at surface. Cut out 3 letters to make your message with 2 inch cookie cutters and set aside until ready to use.

4 Stir up 1 more recipe of Butter Cake with no food col-oring. Pour about 1 inch of batter into prepared pan. Insert the letters to spell your secret message. Align your fi rst row of letters about 1 inch back from the edge of the pan. Space the remaining letters behind each other as close as possible without any gaps.

5 Fill a piping bag with remaining batter and pipe the batter around each letter fi lling ¾ full. Smooth over batter with a spatula making sure all letters are com-pletely covered. Bake for 30 minutes or until light golden brown. Remove from oven and cool in pan for

• If I am stuck in quicksand, what two items will you pull from your utility belt?

• How do you feel about being used as bait?

• If/when your mind is taken over by a supervillain, how much will you resent me if I am forced to incapacitate you?

Tip #54: When leaping buildings in a single bound, keep an eye out for low-flying aircraft, clotheslines, and pigeons . . . definitely pigeons.

- NEVER wear a cape (except to formal events).

Why Can’t We Just Play? What I Did When I Realized My Kids Were Way Too Busy

P A M L O B L E Y

E N D O R S E M E N T S

“[A] touching, honest, and amusing account of the sum-mer she gave her kids the gift of boredom and set a goal for herself that was both simple and profound: to learn to pay attention to her life as she lived it.” —BRIGID SCHULTE, author of the New York Times bestselling Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time

“Pam Lobley is irresistibly funny and forthright, a breath of fresh air . . . Honest and clear-eyed.” —MONICA HOLLOWAY, author of Cowboy & Wills; Driving with Dead People

D E S C R I P T I O N

Facing summer with her two boys, ages ten and seven, Pam Lobley was sifting through signups for swim team, rec camp, night camp, scout camp, and enrichment classes. Overwhelmed at the choices, she asked her sons what they wanted to do during summer: “Soccer? Zoo School? Little Prodigy’s Art Club?”

“Why can’t we just play?” they asked.A summer with no scheduled activities at all . . . The

thought was tempting, but was it possible? It would be like something out of the 1950s. Could they really have a sum-mer like that?

Juggling the expectations of her husband (“Are you going to wear garters?”), her son, Sam (“I’m bored!”), and her son, Jack (“Can I just stay in my pajamas?”), Pam sets out to give her kids an old-fashioned summer. During the shapeless days, she studies up on the myths and realities of the 1950s. With her trademark wit and candor, she reveals what we can learn from those long-ago families, why raising kids has changed so drastically, and most importantly, how to stop time once in a while and just play.

Mothers of the VillageWhy All Moms Need the Support of a Motherhood Community and How to Find It for Yourself

C . J . S C H N E I D E R

D E S C R I P T I O N

So many mothers feel like something is out of joint, some-thing is missing—and maybe the truth is that we’re all just missing each other.

C. J. Schneider found herself in the middle of a perfect storm after giving birth to her third child and moving to a new neighborhood. Conditions for misery and postpartum depression were ideal: she was isolated, lonely, and ex-hausted with three young children at home. As she started talking with other mothers, she realized that she was not alone in her experience of feeling alone.

In her unique voice, Schneider intelligently and com-passionately offers practical advice on how to create the essential community that mothers need. Given the many examples of communal mothering from the past and around the world, as well as modern examples of commu-nities in which mothers are thriving, the research is clear: since the beginning of womankind, mothering has been a communal effort.

Mothers of the Village affirms that as mothers connect with each other and learn to work with each other, despite the challenges, they may find a piece of themselves that they have felt missing all along.

52 Weeks of CookiesHow One Mom Refused to Be Beaten By Her Son’s Deployment

M A G G I E M C C R E A T H

D E S C R I P T I O N

Single mother Maggie McCreath couldn’t decide which was worse: the fact that her only son (not yet twenty-one) was off to war in Iraq for the second time or the fact that they had only five days to prepare. Even more frightening, she knew that he would be part of the Surge and, as a para-trooper in the 82nd Division of the Army, the tip of the Spear. What she did not know—what she couldn’t even bear to consider—was how this deployment would end, both for her son and for his brothers in arms, whom she had come to know and love as her own. So she turned to the one pastime that had always brought her solace: baking.

Filled with delicious, original cookie recipes, 52 Weeks of Cookies recounts a mom’s unique methods of coping during her son’s deployment. With plenty of sugar cookies but no sugarcoating, 52 Weeks of Cookies is an honest, uplifting story of family love during a crisis, with all the fear, grief, laughter, gratitude, and joy that come with it.

New Tricks for Old Dogs28 Laughable Lessons for People Too Stiff to Change . . . or Bend . . . or Move

G E N E P E R R E T

D E S C R I P T I O N

With age comes wisdom. We become wise enough to real-ize that we can’t do some of the things we did so well when we were young. The beloved comedian George Burns said it quite eloquently: “I can do anything at eighty that I could do when I was twenty. That gives you an idea of what terrible shape I was in at twenty.”

Self-help books offer solid, beneficial techniques, but they really only work for the young. More mature devotees must adjust them, tweak them, alter them, and in some cases, ig-nore them completely.

New Tricks for Old Dogs points out some of the flaws in the self-help philosophy. It tempers the advice with com-mon sense. The battle cry of this volume is “Do it, but don’t overdo it.” Sometimes, after we reach a certain age, the best exercise program is a good, brisk nap.

How to Succeed with Your Homeowner’s AssociationThe Complete HOA Guide for Owners, Boards, and Managers

L I N D A M . P E R R E T

D E S C R I P T I O N

How to Succeed with Your Homeowner’s Association is the all-inclusive handbook to help new homeowners transition into peaceful community living. This comprehensive guide explains the ins and outs of an HOA, from the structure and responsibilities to resolving disputes. Author and veteran HOA recording secretary Linda Perret doesn’t take sides—the association against the homeowner or vice versa—but rather explains how both sides are really working toward the same ultimate goal: a beautiful, peaceful neighborhood.

This book answers frequently asked questions like:

• What is an HOA?

• What are the responsibilities of the homewoner?

• Who is the board and what do they do?

• What can I expect from management?

• How to handle disputes with the board, management, and neighbors?

Perret brings over twenty years of experience working for and with various property management companies and HOA members to the table in this complete guidebook for new homeowners and HOA members alike.

Linda Perret has worked with Homeowner’s Associations for almost twenty years. Most of her tenure has been as a recording secretary–attending board meeting, preparing minutes, and facilitating the smooth running of the meeting. But she has always worked with and for property management companies. She has managed properties, drafted board policies, monitored violations, and provided “inspector of election” services. These experiences have provided her with a vast knowledge of how an HOA operates and what steps can be taken to ensure a peaceful and pleasant community.

A Land Twice PromisedAn Israeli Woman’s Quest for Peace

N O A B A U M

E N D O R S E M E N T S

“If you’ve wondered what the Israeli -Palestine conflict looks like on the ground, this account of growing up within it and arriving at peacemaking will take you into the heart of un-derstanding.” —LOREN NIEMI, storyteller/poet

“What a gift to read. The flow of it, emotionally, is powerful and heartwrenching. [Noa is] good at sharing the com-plexities of people—their admirable passions along with prejudices, ignorance, and long- rehearsed arguments. [She is] generous with [her] own love and fears, curiosity, and longing.” —GAIL ROSEN, storyteller

D E S C R I P T I O N

Israeli storyteller Noa Baum grew up in Jerusalem in the shadow of the ancestral traumas of the holocaust and ongo-ing wars. Stories of the past and fear of annihilation in the wars of the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s shaped her perceptions and identity. In America, she met a Palestinian woman who had grown up under Israeli Occupation, and they shared mem-ories of war years in Jerusalem, and an unlikely friendship blossomed.

A Land Twice Promised delves into the heart of one of the world’s most enduring and complex conflicts. Baum’s deep-ly personal memoir recounts her journey from girlhood in post -Holocaust Israel to her adult encounter with “the oth-er.” With honesty, compassion, and humor, she captures the drama of a nation at war and her discovery of humanity in the enemy.

This compelling memoir demonstrates the transforma-tive power of art and challenges each reader to take the first step toward peace.

Tennis and Life30 Winning Lessons for the Two Greatest Games

R I C H A R D E Y R E

D E S C R I P T I O N

Games are made up of structured but unpredictable situa-tions, with rules and variables and competition, and they produce wins and losses. This description fits life at least as well as it fits tennis. Even the terminology of tennis match-es many of the most pivotal and defining words of life: love, faults, serve, receive, winners, challenges, holds.

New York Times #1 bestselling author and tennis champion Richard Eyre shares thirty principles that will help you enjoy both games more—and play both games better. Since both are largely psychological exercises, our success (and our happi-ness) in both the game of life and the game of tennis depends greatly on our attitude, and Tennis and Life teaches readers how to alter our attitudes and thus improve our performance in both games.

We make beautiful books that help

families be happy.

Welcome to the family!

Read our story at familius.com/our-mission to see what makes us tick.

We’re a little nuts, but we don’t bite. Unless

you’re made of chocolate, in which case we

SECRET MESSAGE CAKESECRET MESSAGE CAKE

When you need to slip a distress message to your sidekick, there’s nothing better than a secret message cake. Of course, whether or not your sidekick can even read is an entirely different matter. You did ask about that in the interview, didn’t you?

YOUR MISSION

1 Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line 4 square pans with parchment paper leaving 2 inches on each end to hang over the sides.

2 Make cake according to directions and add 4-5 drops of paste food coloring and stir to blend. Divide batter evenly between 3 pans (you will use the 4th pan lat-er) fi lling ¾ full. There may be left over batter.

3 Bake for 30 minutes or until light golden brown. Re-move from oven and cool in pans for 15 minutes be-fore removing to wires racks and cooling completely.
