Simply stated, you need a mastery of the concepts and reactions covered in CEM 251 in order to follow and do well in CEM 252. All students are encouraged to review the course work presented in CEM 251. In CEM 252, we will begin with introducing conjugated systems, aromaticity and reactions of aromatic compounds. Next, we will gradually introduce various functional groups commonly found in organic chemistry. A large portion of the semester will be spent on the study of carbonyl compounds, their reactions and properties. The last functional group studied will be amines. We will also look at the chemistry of carbohydrates and amino acids. The large battery of reactions you have learned and will learn in CEM 252 should be viewed as tools for synthesis of organic molecules. You are expected to propose syntheses of molecules based on the mastery of the reactions you know. This requires you to know your ‘tools’ well in order to use them for synthesis of compounds. Another important topic of Organic Chemistry is structure elucidation, which was covered in CEM 251 under the various Spectroscopy chapters. For this class, you are expected to be able to use spectroscopy, with focus on NMR spectroscopy, to elucidate the structure of different organic compounds. Molecular models: Molecular models may help you visualize molecules in three dimensions. Sets may be purchased at most college bookstores or online. Models are optional; you do not need them to get a good grade, but some students find them helpful for visualization of molecular structures. Models cannot be used during exams.

Manual, Cengage Learning Class Coordinator: Nancy Lavrik (Pronouns: She/Her/Hers) Office: 382 Chemistry Email: [email protected] Course Description:

The second semester of organic chemistry is a natural progression of the material covered in the first semester. Molecular models:

How much should you study?

A conservative estimate is about 3 hours per lecture. Begin from day one. It is important to keep up with the lectures. More than any course, organic chemistry depends on previously discussed material. It is very easy to fall behind. Examinations and Grading:

The course grade will be based on your cumulative score on three midterms, quizzes, recitation activities, BACON online activities and the final. There will be NO make-up assignments, quizzes or exams. University rules stipulate that you will receive a 0.0 for the course if you do not take the final exam.

Total Points Percent Grade Total Points Percent Grade

540 90 4.0 300 50 2.0 480 80 3.5 270 45 1.5 420 70 3.0 240 40 1.0 360 60 2.5 <240 <40 0.0

Regrading of Exams: Hourly exams will be returned during the regularly scheduled recitation following the exam. Any regrading requests must be made at that time to the recitation instructor. Except for obvious addition errors, no exam which has left the recitation room with a student will be considered for regrading. Final exams are not returned but are kept by your recitation instructor. Posting of Exam Scores: After the exams have been graded and recorded, you can check the cemscores website for your grade: cemscores.msu.edu or from the MSU home page or the chemistry department home page enter just the word cemscores into the address bar area (do not include www in front of it). You can also check the grades of your quizzes in this website. BACON: Biology And Chemistry Online Notes BACON is an online resource for organic chemistry that complements what you learn in class. There is a real-life connection between organic chemistry and your daily life, which is often missed and not appreciated by students. BACON strives to close this gap. I STRONGLY encourage you to follow BACON tutorials as we proceed through different topics. You will have 16 BACON tutorials available this term. Some of them are on 251 material some on new material. Each BACON tutorial is followed by a brief multiple choice post-BACON quiz. The 10 highest post-BACON quiz scores will be averaged together and weighted to 8% (50 pts, 5pts each) of your final course grade. Instructions for signing up for BACON are provided in page 6 of this syllabus.

Recitations:

This is your chance to ask the questions you were not able to ask in lecture. Your teaching assistants are a great source of information and help. Attendance is very important if you want to learn organic chemistry. Listening to lecture does not teach you the problem solving skills you need. The goal of recitation is to guide you through problems, answer questions regarding the lectures, and teach you how to talk organic chemistry. The following is the list of recitations for this class. It is important that you know the name of your recitation instructor and write it and your section number on all of your quizzes and exams. This will ensure that your scores are properly recorded.

Two different GRADED activities will take place during recitations. a. Quizzes. There will be 4 quizzes during the last 20 minutes of 4 recitations. The

material and the time for each quiz will be announced the week before during the Friday lecture.

b. Recitation Activities. During the semester you will have 2 graded recitation activities during the last 20 or 30 minutes of 2 recitations. The material and time for the activities will also be announced the week before during the Friday lecture.

Problem Sets:

Suggested problems from the book for each chapter are attached at the end of this syllabus. They will not be collected and graded, however, I strongly suggest that you attempt the problems to gauge your understanding of the material and test your readiness for the exams. I discourage you from looking at the solutions manual without attempting to do the problems. Try to use your text and notes to see if you can solve the problems. Remember, if you are not able to solve the problems, it probably means that you have not understood the subject matter. Go back and read, do not just look up the answer! It is much more beneficial for you to struggle through the problem and learn, as opposed to looking at the solution manual and see how it is done. In addition, throughout the semester several problem sets will be posted on the CEM252 web site, (http://www2.chemistry.msu.edu/courses/cem252/), along with their solutions. These problem sets will not be graded but you are strongly advised to study them and make sure you know how to solve them. Recitations and office hours is a good time to discuss these problems and ask for help.

Recitations and Quizzes: Recitations begin January 6th. These periods will be devoted to giving

and going over quizzes, answering questions, assisting students in problem solving, and returning and

going over hourly examinations. Since your recitation instructor keeps course records, it is critical that

you know your recitation instructor's name and your recitation section number by the time of the first

recitation/quiz. For extra help, you may see any CEM 252 TA during scheduled office hours. Please

do not enter graduate labs at other times since dangerous chemicals are always present and potentially

dangerous experiments may be in progress.

Quizzes must be taken in the section in which you are enrolled. Quizzes for recitation sections that meet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will cover material through the previous week’s lectures. Note: The first quiz will cover material from CEM 251 that should be considered general knowledge. Quizzes and mid-term exams will be returned during the next recitation. Missed Quizzes: No makeup quizzes will be given.* So as to accommodate all persons who must miss any exam or scheduled quiz due to religious holidays, unavoidable person commitments, grief absences, illness, etc., we will allow each student to drop their TWO lowest quizzes. (The dropping of these 2 quizzes is NOT meant to provide a means of excusing or minimizing poor quiz performance.) Missed Hourly Exams: No makeup exams will be given. * If you miss an hourly examination due to

religious holidays, unavoidable personal commitments, illness, etc., I will drop that exam. If you miss

more than one hourly examination, I will prorate your final. For an example; if you miss two exams,

your final will count for 300 points, etc. An important point to note is that once you start an exam that

score counts toward your final grade. Furthermore, once exams have been handed out, leaving the

exam room without handing in your exam and/or leaving the exam room with a copy of the exam will

result in a score of zero for that exam and will be reported as an act of academic misconduct. (The

dropping of 1 exam is NOT meant to provide a means of excusing or minimizing poor exam

performance.)

*If you know you will have a conflict with the dates indicated above AND you email me the details of

the conflict by January 17th, I will look into alternate dates for a makeup quiz or exam. In cases

where an alternate date is not feasible, the missed quiz or exam will be treated as described above.

Regrading of Exams and Quizzes: Exams and quizzes will be returned only during the regularly scheduled recitation meeting following the exam or quiz. Any regrading requests must be made at that time to the recitation instructor by means of a note attached to the exam. No exam or quiz that has left the recitation room in possession of the student will be considered for regrading. The entire exam or quiz will be regraded over when a request for regrading is made. Please note that exams may be scanned and archived.

Homework will be posted in D2L and will be graded. The start dates of those homework are indicated

on the schedule; students will have a week to complete each assignment. No makeup homework will

be given. * So as to accommodate all persons who must miss any scheduled homework due to

religious holidays, unavoidable person commitments, grief absences, illness, etc., we will allow each

student to drop their three lowest homework scores.

Announcements: Please check D2L frequently as important information, course up-dates, and additional materials will be placed there as the course progresses.

Reading Assignments & Suggested Problems from the Book: Learning organic chemistry is best

achieved through reading and working problems. Lists of reading assignments and suggested

problems for each chapter will be posted in D2L. It’s highly recommended to work through the in-

chapter problem as one reads the chapter. One should attempt to solve as many problems as possible.

Book problems, clicker questions in class, and quizzes in recitations are the best indication of how exam

questions will be formulated.

Problem sets assigned from the text will not be graded. However, exams and quizzes will be based upon

the lecture material and upon principles and facts exemplified by the assigned problems. Working

problems is the single most effective way to learn organic chemistry; in fact, you cannot learn the material

without working many such problems.

Supplemental Material: You may also find Professor Reusch's Virtual Textbook of Organic Chemistry

helpful. https://www2.chemistry.msu.edu/faculty/reusch/VirtTxtJml/intro1.htm

Study Hints: We urge you to consider the following a few points:

1. Organic chemistry in many ways resembles a new language. You cannot avoid quite a bit of memorization (both vocabulary and reaction types), and you must use your gained knowledge to apply analytical thinking to problem solving. Both mental feats are good practice for any profession to which you aspire.

2. To do well, you must do a lot of writing - write formulas, write equations, so that you can write complex structures quickly. You cannot learn organic chemistry just by taking a picture of the board.

3. The best way to do well is to work problems, as many as you possibly can. We will assign some, and the quizzes will be based on them, but try to do as many others as you possibly can. You may consult other chemistry texts and online resources for additional problems.

4. Attendance at lectures is not required, but experience shows that most people who do not attend regularly will not do well.

5. Organic chemistry is a cumulative subject. If you get behind at the beginning, you will get lost, because every new topic depends on what went before it. So, keep up to date; don't get behind. The first quiz will revisit some CEM 251 material, much of which is essential to understanding and mastering the new information in CEM 252. In this regard, the immediate task at hand is to make sure you can recognize and illustrate the common functional groups shown on the inside front cover of the text. You would also benefit from an immediate review of Chapters 12 and 13.

6. Plan on a minimum of 10 hours/week for studying outside of class.

Page 25: SPRING 2020 CEM 252: ORGANIC CHEMISTRY II SECTIONS …Organic Chemistry, 8th Edition, Study Guide and Student Solutions Manual, Cengage Learning Class Coordinator: Nancy Lavrik (Pronouns:

Grading: There will be three examinations given during the lecture period on the dates indicated. These will count 100 points each. Seven quizzes (20 points each) will be given in the beginning of recitations. You must take each quiz in the recitation section in which you are enrolled. Lastly. there will be several homework assignments worth a total of 70 points. Your total points and their relationship to your final grade will be determined as follows. Two Best Examinations = 200 points Five Best Quizzes = 100 points Seven Best Homework = 70 points Final Examination = 150 points Total = 520 points
