The Spring 2021 ASME Hawaii FrancisRhodes Montgomery Design Competition(FRMDC) was held on Friday, May 7, 2021, viaZoom video conference. This is the 34th year ofthe competition since it began in 1987 and the2nd year that the competition was held virtuallydue to the ongoing global pandemic. Theannual event is cosponsored by the Universityof Hawaii at Manoa, Department of MechanicalEngineering, and the ASME Hawaii Francis R.Montgomery Foundation.
Thanks to the efforts of Professors Dr.Mehrdad Nejhad and Dr. Trevor Sorensen, thestudent project coordination and competitionwere completed with great success. Dr. Nejhadand Dr. Sorensen have been the instructors forthe Senior Design ME 481/482 courses for Fall2020 and Spring 2021.
This year, the design competition consistedof 8 project teams from the ME 482 designcourse. The virtual format consisted of theteams performing a timed presentation in whichthe students presented their project goals,challenges, application of engineeringprinciples, and design results, followed byjudge’s questions. The teams then held timedposter presentations where after a short andfinal speech to present the successes andaccomplishments of their project, the judgeswere able to ask their final and more detailedquestions about each project. Unfortunately,the students were still not able to perform livedemonstrations of their projects due to thechallenges that social distancing posed forfabrication and testing. This was especiallydifficult for the larger projects that typicallyrequire large amounts of on-campus fabricationtime. This portion of the competition was nottaken into consideration for scoring due to thesereasons.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, thestudents adapted very well and all did afantastic job planning, designing, problemsolving and converting their design conceptsinto reality. Following the ASME/FRMDCscoring rubric and guidelines, the judgesranked the first, second, and third place teamsas follows: First place and $500 went to TeamUHPS: Autonomous Electric Vehicle System; insecond place and receiving $300 wasAerospace Technologies Team Hokulele; andthird place and $200 was awarded to TeamUHABS-7. All 8 of the mechanical engineeringstudent teams demonstrated the application oftheir cumulative engineering knowledge verywell making final scores extremely competitive.The projects were so competitive that there wasa 3-way tie for 4th place.Team Project Descriptions:
First Place Team: Team UHPS: AutonomousElectric Vehicle System (AEVS)
The Team UHPS goal was to design the nextiteration of the AEVS that will accept and deliverparcels around the University of Hawaii, Manoaupper campus with the purpose of testing andencouraging the use of electric power. Designimprovements made to the AEVS were a self-correcting differential steering powertrain,usage of camera object detection along withultrasonic & bumper sensors, improvements tothe interior cargo hold and parcel security, andthe addition of GPS-mapping.Second Place Team: Team Hokulele: Two-Stage High Powered Rocket
Team Hokulele’s goal was to design and builda two-stage high powered rocket capable ofcarrying a rover and camera payload. Therocket is designed to reach an altitude of 30,000feet and be recovered safely. This projectsupports the University’s developing aerospaceprogram by promoting interest in the aerospaceindustry both within the school and thecommunity. Team Hokulele will be traveling tothe Friends of amateur Rocketry (FAR) 1030rocket competition in June 2021.Third Place Team: University of HawaiiAdvanced Balloon Satellite 7
The University of Hawaii Advanced BalloonSatellite 7 team is focused on developing amarine vessel that will autonomously return aballoon satellite payload designed for an oceanlanding. This recovery vehicle will aid futureballoon satellite launches to prevent the loss ofinstrumentation and data. The recovery systemis designed to perform autonomous navigationand guidance in ocean conditions, that can becontrolled and monitored by a ground control
station via telemetry. The vehicle will propel andsteer itself through the ocean and successfullyreturn to a designated recover location off thecoast of Oahu.Fixed Wing Autonomous Drone
The Fixed-Wing Autonomous Drone VIP(FWAD) team has designed and developed afully autonomous electric and Unmanned AerialVehicle (UAV) to survey and monitor a 4,000-acre macadamia nut farm on the Big Island ofHawaii. The UAV will take footage with an HDcamera under the fuselage providing groundcrew with an HD bird’s-eye view of the areabelow, so that the operator can determine if thecrops are ready to harvest, or have been fullyharvested.Pearl Harbor (PH)-Pipe Array CleaningRobot
The PH-Pipe team completed two projects:the autonomous pipe array cleaning robot andthe pipe inspection attachment. The team laidout the base for the control architecture of theautonomous pipe array cleaning robot using theArduino coding language to ease futuremodifications of the existing source code. Theteam also successfully created an attachmentto an existing borescope model used in thePearl Harbor Naval Shipyard to aid in turningand navigating 90° bends of small diameterpipes.Pearl Harbor (PH)-Metal 3D PrintingCertification
PH-M3D developed a certification process formetal 3D printed parts to certify that thecomponents can be safely used in the same

ALOHAnet, the pioneering computernetworking system developed at the Universityof Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s College of Engineering isturning 50 this year, and the College iscelebrating this anniversary with a 50thAnniversary Mini-Symposium to be broadcastlive from Mānoa on June 16.
The virtual event is free and open to thepublic, and runs from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm HST,with an agenda packed full of guest speakers,video presentations, and panel discussedhighlighting the history of the technology, itsimpact on academia, and its impact on industry.
Speakers include Hawai‘i Governor DavidIge, Google Chief Internet Evangelist Vint Cerf,IEEE President Kathy Land, FCC CTO MonishaGhosh, and many more. The event is supportedby The Bass Trust (Presenting Sponsor), and
College’s Mini-Symposium on June 16 will commemorate50 years of ALOHAnet
the IEEE Communications Society (LogoSponsor).
ALOHAnet was developed under theleadership of the late founder Dr. NormanAbramson, who passed away in December of2020, as well as Dr. Franklin Kuo and a team offaculty and students. All wirelesscommunications today – including mobile,satellite, cellular, and WiFi – utilize the ALOHAprotocol to establish an initial link. In October of2020, ALOHAnet was inducted as the third IEEEMilestone in the state of Hawai‘i.

The ASME Group Leadership DevelopmentConference (GLDC) was planned for and heldvirtually on April 30 and May 1, 2021.Registration fee was just $20 per attendee. Bothdays ran from 4:00 AM (HST) to about 8:30 AM(HST). The conference provided theopportunity to network with peers and gathervirtually to learn about working within ourgroups and developing successful programs ina virtual environment, the nuts and bolts ofrunning thriving volunteer teams, and ASMEand their role in helping us achieve ourvolunteer leadership goals.
The GLDC was attended by Chair DerekSato, and Member Abel Siu Ho. They will sharelessons learned and information gathered fromtheir GLDC participation.
2021 FRANCIS RHODES MONTGOMERYDESIGN COMPETITION (FRMDC):
The 2021 34th FRMDC was planned for andheld May 7, 2021 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM viaprivate Zoom meeting. Judges from HawaiianElectric Company, Inc. were provided withproject brochures and scoring guidelines asthey judged the projects. On Friday, April 16th, Morgan Stephenson,Ocean Engineer, Sea Engineering, Inc.,presented "Wave Modeling - Effects of SeaLevel Rise and Inundation." Twenty-five ASCEYMF members attended the virtual presentationon Zoom which included a live question andanswer session. Stephenson explained howSea Engineering uses buoy data and the"XBeach-NH+" modeling software to visualizesea level rise, and high-resolution wavemodeling of wave propagation and inundation
patterns. Sea Engineering has used wavemodeling for Kahalu`u Beach Park, Hawaiiisland, and currently is using it for the WaikikiBeach master plan.Macrame Social
On May 7th, 17 ASCE YMF members joinedtogether over Zoom for a macrame plant potholder making event. In preparation forMother’s Day, the participants learned the ropes(literally), creating hanging pot holders for minisucculents. The members conversed andpartook in good fellowship, reminding us theimportance of social interaction. All of themacrame pieces turned out beautifully. Thankyou to all the participants for attending!

Rainbow Warrior Racing (RWR) at UH Manoahas been a part of the Formula Society ofAutomotive Engineers (SAE) collegiate designseries for many years and for much of that timethe vehicle was built around an internalcombustion engine. RWR has shifted to theelectric vehicle class and this is the currentfocus of the 2020-2021 team and will continueto remain the focus for future teams in years tocome.Acknowledgements:

The ITE Hawaii Section hosted a virtualTechnical Solutions Event on Wednesday, May19th. The event featured transportation industrypartners including Carmanah, Econolite, Iteris,McCain, PedSafety, and Q-Free. Eachcompany hosted a breakout session focused onprojects outside of Hawaii but highlighted howthe solution could be applied locally. The goalof the event was to provide attendees withinnovative solutions for transportation issuesand share lessons learned. The section hopesto establish this as a yearly event and plans tobring new partners and new solutions in eachyear.

Spring 2021 Career Day a hit withemployers and students
On February 26th, the College of Engineeringsuccessfully hosted its second EngineeringCareer Day in a fully virtual format. Over 80companies participated in the morning andafternoon sessions, with nearly 300 student and200 recruiter attendees per session.
Employers ranged from city, state, andfederal agencies to large mainland corporationsand boutique local engineering firms.Opportunities were available for civil, computer,construction, electrical, and mechanicalengineering students, as well as computerscience majors and those from relatedbackgrounds. Participating companiespromoted both full-time and internshipplacements, and alumni of the college were alsoinvited to attend.
The online career fair coincided withEngineers Week, offering a mid-week focalpoint for Hawaiʻi’s celebration of the nationwideweek highlighting the engineering profession.
Via the virtual platform, candidates andrecruiters were able to engage in 1:1 chats viatext, audio, and video connections, and over thecourse of the event, over 1,700 conversationswere held. Students worked hard to prepare forCareer Day by attending a variety of preparationevents organized by the College, includingresume review sessions, feedback sessionswith industry professionals, and a LinkedInworkshop.
