insights into the genesis of herzog & de Meuron

The development of the globally active architectural practice out of a local milieu, with reference to selected historic buildings in Basel and projects by herzog & de Meuron

The global success story of the architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron has local roots. This book traces these origins while identifying the essential ideas, pro-fessional ethics, and development of their practice, established in 1978. The biographies of both architects and the activities of their practice are intimately bound up with Basel. With this embedded-ness as a point of departure, the authors analyze the motifs, constructive principles, and spatial design of their oeuvre.

The local roots of a global success story

In addition, Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron lead us on tours through Basel and its surroundings: statements, along with photographs taken for this volume by George Dupin, present the places and buildings that have played key roles for their work. The book is rounded out by an extensive interview.

Modern style in Vienna’s historic city center

The Zacherlhaus is located in the heart of Vienna, just 180 meters from St. Stephen’s Cathedral, and is one of the most important buildings created by the Otto Wagner School. It was built in the years from 1900 to 1913 and designed for its owner Johann Zacherl by JožePlecnik, who later taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and from 1925 worked on the urban renewal of Ljubljana. It was the firstcombinedresidentialandcommercialbuilding of modern style in the historic inner city and is one of the best known buildings in Vienna. This generously illustrated, authentic publication documents the building and its thorough renovation, which will be completed in 2015; it includes contributions by experts on European architecture of the 20th century.

The book describes the story of Clarté, LeCorbusier’sfirstapartmentbuilding,con-tinuing the narrative into the 21st century. The steel skeleton building completed in Geneva in 1930/1932 is a prototype of the Moderne style and a precursor of the Unité d’Habitation. The building was neglected for many decades and not listed as a historic building until the 1990s. In 2007 the external envelope was repairedasthefirststep,followedbyrefur-bishment of the interior, in which building preservation requirements were taken into account in an exemplary manner. The building log book by the architects and structural engineers is illustrated with numerous new and historic drawings and photographs, and has been supplemented with an account of the building’s history. The renovated building is presented in large photographs.

Martin Kohlbauer founded his practice in Vienna in 1991. Previously he had studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, in the Master Class of Prof. Gustav Peichl, for whom he also worked. In that function he took responsibility for project managing the building of the art and exhibition hall in Bonn. In addition to the design of exhibitions, his own oeuvre includes primarily large projects in which his architec-tural strength becomes apparent – high- density housing, a hospital, a wellness facility, officebuildingsandindustrialdevelopments. With his sculptural, bright and user-friendly architecture, Kohlbauer has had a sustainable impact on Vienna’s architecture. The book presents his most important buildings since 1991 in a generously illustrated, typologically arranged compilation.

However, using the technology purely as an electronic drawing board is not enough for him – programs are intended to generate solutions. The works selected for this publica-tion therefore represent the architect’s design concepts and working methods rather than solutions for building projects. The projects are primarily presented in the form of images; descriptions, data and com-ments have been reduced to the minimum possible. iconic leaning tower on the abu Dhabi skyline

Capital Gate, also known as the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi, is a skyscraper with a striking lean. Inclined by 18 degrees to the west, this spectacular high-rise was made possible by a diagrid structure. The iconic building even received an entry into the Guinness World Records as the „world’s furthest leaning man-made tower“. The complexity of every aspect of the design, fabrication and erection of this project would not have been possible without the use of digital modeling which was explored at a very high level. This book tells the story behind the design by architectur-alofficeRMJM,explainsthesophisticatedstructural concept and shows a building of outstanding elegance with the photography by Gerry O’Leary.

prof. yves WeinandArchitect, structural engineer and Head of the IBOIS wood construction laboratory at the EPFL

Wood is usually perceived as a “traditional” material. However, the properties of this material have now for some time made it pos-sible to design free forms and highly complex structures. Today, the wood laboratory of the EPF Lausanne, which was originally founded by Julius Natterer, is testing the production of origami structures, ribbed shells, fabric structures and curved panels under the guidance of Professor Weinand using digital calculation and computer-aided processing methods. The research results are tested in prototypes, which demonstrate the potential

3rd edition enlarged by a new introduction

The popular book on two millennia of wood architecture

Building with wood as an ecologically viable material is a tradition with a long history. In the most typical method, elements are connected by using wood joints which do not require the assistance of adhesives or metal connectors. By looking at several hundred examples from Japan, China and 18 European countries, this book describes in great detail the history of timber architecture in terms of its tech-nical, aesthetic and ecological dimensions. This thorough study is a mine of information tospecialistsinthisfield;itopensuptothecraftsman of today what has become an almost forgotten world and provides a fasci-nating account for the general reader. People have been looking at nature as an example, as a model and as something to emulate since time immemorial. Nature has inspired with the perfect construction of some of its objects and their optimized use of ener-gy, as well as their adaptability and versatility. Nature is an immense source of inspiration for creative people – but also presents a counterpoise to one’s creative work. Scien-tists, engineers, architects and artists all drink of nature’s rich chalice, they learn from it and draw inspiration from it. Using many examples, the book illustrates how designers have learnt from nature and outlines avenues of potential further learning. This second edition includes a previously un-published interview with Frei Otto dating from the end of 2014, shortly before his death.

life in urban neighborhoods in China

Cities in China are extremely dynamic and experience high pressure to grow, transform and adapt. But in what directions, on what basis and to what ends? The authors and their team have researched the intensive trans-formation processes of about one hundred neighborhood communities that were created in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Suzhou in the last 30 years, ranging from inner-city to peripheral areas, starting from planning and leading up to user satisfaction studies. This in-depth overview on neighborhood ty-pology and development in China follows the book Emergent Architectural Territories in East Asian Cities by Peter Rowe, who is among the world’s best scholars on urban transformation in East Asia, together with his colleagues Ann Forsyth and Har Ye Kan.

Norwegian architecture has been in the inter-national spotlight in recent years. Following the success of Made in Norway, this second volume presents a selection of 40 new exam-ples of the best contemporary architecture Norway has to offer. These projects – large and small, rural and urban – are examples of how architects in Norway have reacted to the challenges of today. How are the differ-ent aspects of a modern Scandinavian society reflectedinitsarchitecture?Howarenewtechnical and material possibilities translated into relevant buildings for the 21st century? The book is based on presentations from Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Review of Ar-chitecture, but also contains new material, explaining and discussing some of the main challenges of architecture today, as seen from Norway.

In the 19th century railroads and canals provided both structure and motor for city development. This role has been taken over todaybytheglobalflowofdataandproducts,as this book argues. Flow of material and communication is the DNA of contemporary environments. This development has enor-mous and partially unfathomable implica-tions for our city fabric. Countertrends to the ubiquitous internet retail trade – to name one of the most palpable phenomena – are gain-ingmomentumaswell,exemplifiedbythecriticism of labor conditions in e-commerce and the trend to buy regional products from local stores. a balancing act for the city

This publication explores the contested terri-tory between the state and corporate drive to “securitise” urban space – and the principle of the city as a site for enacting open civil society, participatory democracy, and the freedom of speech and assembly. Starting from the disputed redevelopment of the Oslo Government Quarter since its attack in 2011, the book functions as a broader discursive platform mediating opposing positions at the intersection of architecture/urbanism and security/democracy. The book interposes essays, interviews, site drawings, a lexicon of terms, and photo-essays documenting fieldworkintheUK,USA,Israel,Palestine and Spain. Contributors include: S. Graham, M. Sorkin, D. Harvey, G. Agamben, Y. Yasky, L. Lambert, CPNI, R. V. Clarke, J. Coaffee, and O. Newman.

a key issue for building in existing fabric

in-depth analysis of international examples

Building in existing fabric – with art

Design interventions for the reuse of existing structures must face the question of the past and the extent to which it should be included in the design for the future. This is the point of departure of Int | AR, a yearly publication on current issues in international adaptive reuse. When and how is material from an existing building the catalyst for art? When does art create function and program within adap-tive reuse projects? How can art transform the economics of a built context? When and where does art become building and building become art? This Int | AR volume presents essays, built or unbuilt projects and ideas that investigate the relationship of art and building reuse.

Current positions in design research

Design research is multi-faceted and under-going constant change. This book investigates the status quo of things and outlines the elementary issues faced by researchers. Sixteen international authors address four different aspects in their personal state-ments: Are there differences between design practice and the practice of design research? What alliances between text and artefact are possible in the search for new knowledge? How does design research translate and transform theories and methods from other disciplines? Is design research moving to-wards becoming a formal discipline and, if so, wouldthisreallybeofbenefit?Thiscompen-dium is a survey of a fast-growing research fieldand, atthesametime, providespointersfor personal orientation.

In the last 15 years, many artists have been invited to ex-hibit in the Amden Atelier, a small farm, or to use the facilities for the production of a work of art. This publication includes all exhibitions and installations staged since 1999 and describes and discusses the individual art projects. new findings on the creation of and dealing in art in the national socialist era

Modern art in national socialism

On the pretext of the “Malverbot” (an order disallowing painting), many German painters and sculptors after 1945 portrayed them-selves in a one-sided way as persecuted artists. The reason given is often just the fact that they were represented at the “Entartete Kunst” exhibition with just one item of work. This does not take into account the fact that, apart from that, most artists were not troubled, andevenbenefitedfrompublic commissions. After the war, it was soon forgotten how everyday artists’ activities were organized under the regulations issued by the “Reichskammer der bildenden Künste”. What were the working conditions for artists and dealers? Was it forbidden to collect modernart?Thebookfocusesforthefirsttime on these legal aspects of art under National Socialism.

The World Heritage Site recognized by UNESCO in 2011 covers locations in Germany, France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Slove-nia. The stilt houses provide us with an insight into the living conditions of communities between 5000 and 600 BC, i.e. ranging from the later Neolithic period to the Iron Age. The houses are not visible on the surface, but are hidden in the water along the banks and in shallow water areas of the sub-alpine lakes, or under the surface of moorland. As the stilt houses were hermetically sealed in these locations, organic materials such as timber, textile and food remains have been extraordinarily well preserved. However, modern use and changes in environmental conditions pose a threat to these sensitive historic sites.

new findings based on constellation research

With numerous contributions in english language

Research and communication processes in the arts and humanities are undergoing pro-found change. On the one hand, the digitali-zation of the source material promises global availability “from your desk”, on the other hand, new approaches and applications are developed in information technology which – under the key word digital humanities (German: eHumanities) – improve the scientificexplorationandevaluationofthematerial available in the humanities. The contributions in this volume discuss approaches, problems and issues in the

development of this research environment from a multidisciplinary point of view, and risk a view to future development and research perspectives in the digital humanities.

laboratory buildings: past and present

New laboratory buildings are currently being planned all around the world. Are they differ-ent from or even better than their predeces-sors? To answer this question, the authors of this book have journeyed into the past and present of laboratory architecture. They dis-cuss the images of the research scientist and the laboratory that have been purveyed since the natural sciences were institutionalized in the 19th century. They also examine con-temporary architectural solutions in the light ofinfluentiallaboratoryarchitectures of the latter half of the twentieth century, thereby discovering a great variety of ap-proaches, historical and contemporary – for both the functional interrelation of spaces and the tension between symbolic façades and internal structures can take very different forms.

Inrecentyears, theemergingfieldofmuseumstudies has seen rapid expansion in the crit-ical study of museums and scholars started to question the institution and its functions. To contribute differentiated viewpoints to the currently evolving meta-discourse on the mu-seum, this volume aims to investigate how the institution of the museum has been vi- sualized and translated into different kinds of images and how these images have affect-ed our perception of these institutions. The volume opens up a debate about the epistemological and historiographical sig-nificanceofavarietyofdifferentimagesandrepresentations of the Art Museum, including the transformation or adaptation of the image of the art museum across periods and cultures.

The importance of art in the american aiDs discussion

In 1989, the photographer Nan Goldin curated Witnesses: Against Our Vanishing in the Artists SpaceinNewYork,thefirstgroupexhibi-tion on the subject of AIDS. Based on these photographic representations, the study investigates the importance of AIDS in art. The publication focuses on the exhibition of works of art dealing with the epidemic, which became the subject of political and moral debate, with funding for the exhibition – which wasseenasafightforthesocialvisibilityofAIDS – used as an instrument of power. A new understanding of the artistic, social and political importance of AIDS-related art in the USA in the late 1980s is conveyed using an analysis of the exhibition and six interviews with New York artists and curators.

In formulating a design concept into a viable plan, architects oscillate constantly between two planes of observation: the actual design task in the context of planning typologies suchasresidentialbuildings, officebuildings, museum, or airport, and the individual room, meaningthekitchen,office,classroom,sani-tary rooms, and so on.Planning Architecture offers architects and students a well thought-out planning tool, in which two main sections reciprocally complement one another: the “spaces” and the “typologies” between which the planner canflexiblyoscillatedependingonhisorher

Bhutan, the last remaining Buddhist Himalayan King-dom, has been able to preserve a remarkable textile art which is woven into all aspects of life and signi-fies the merging between art and spirituality. This is due to Bhutan’s remote mountainous location with its natural borders, a deliberate external policy and the basic principles of Buddhist ethics. Bhutanese texti-les are clothing and everyday object, tax, currency and commodity, gifts marking important events in the course of a life, and demonstrate the social status of a person as a sign of prestige and prosperity. Textiles are a symbol of national identity as well as a proof of the regional diversity within the country. They are an expression of religious devotion, serve to distinguish and decorate sacred places and are an integral part

of Buddhist and pre- Buddhist rituals as well as reli-gious festivals and dances, which awaken Buddhist mythology to life and again express the symbiotic relationship between art and spirituality. Bhutanese textiles are products of traditional knowledge of fiber production, dyeing, weaving, sewing, applique and embroidery. They provide an insight into the mystical and religious beliefs of the Bhutanese population, re-flect the complementary but separate worlds of wo-men and men and give a dimension to the Bhutanese concept of gender. Bhutanese textiles give an account of the changing fashions of the Bhutanese society and external influences. And finally they tell the story of a country that sensitively seeks a balance between tradition and progress in a globalized world.
