    B What a Celebration!

Crossroads Mission Yuma, AZSPRING & SUMMER 2009

Were sorry but we have sold out! Thats what may people heard when they tried to buy tickets one week before our 50th Anniversary celebration, Where I Lay Me

Down to Sleep . We couldnt believe the response fromthe community. All 720 seats sold at the Yuma Civic andConvention Center. That was 90 tables of sponsors. Godand the friends of Crossroads were a blessing. Since thiswas our rst banquet-style fundraiser, we were blessedindeed.

Oscar Chavez and some of his family members providedeasy-listening music as the folks poured into the building. The room looked very festive with colors of dark bluehighlighted by examples of donated non-perishablefood items as center pieces. John Ashmen, Executive

Director of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions(AGRM), was the master of ceremonies for the evening.John has a heart for the homeless as his internationalorganization often advocates concerning homeless issuesin Washington, DC. AGRMs mission is to proclaim the

passion of Jesus Christ toward the hungry, homeless, abused and addicted. Johns quick wit and genuineinterest in people started the evening out in a impressive

direction. As the evening progressed, Mike Yankoski told of

his experiences of living as a homeless person in 5major cities in the United States. Mike wrote Under the Overpass after his experience and shared rst-handexperiences of life on the streets. Most of us empathizewith the homeless but have not had to endure thosecircumstances. Mike wanted to know what the homelessendured. As he relayed his poignant stories, many heartswere touched. A Busy Time at Crossroads Mission!I am so honored to present this newsletter to you,our supporters! Crossroads Mission is of ciallycelebrating its 50th year of operations. We have

been busy celebrating by raising funds to buildthe new Family Shelter and Career Center. InMarch, we held our very rst banquet fund raiser. That story is on Page One of this edition of Newsfor Our Partners. Staff members, volunteers, andeveryone involved with the event were energized

by the outpouring of the community. The nancialsupport, encouraging words, and the numbers of

people attending reminded me of how Crossroads belongs to this community! Thank you Yuma!As you read the articles, youll understand how

busy we have been. May 9 was another hugeevent for us and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) of the US Postal Of ce. The

NALC graciously gave Crossroads the Help StampOut Hunger in Yuma campaign this year. Thisone-day event provided Crossroads with 27,000

pounds of non-perishable food. Every summer westruggle to provide meals to hungry people. Weare so thankful to be provided this opportunity. The dedicated letter carriers, NALC of cials, the Postmaster, the assistant Postmaster but mostimportantly those folks who heard our appeal and

put food in bags by their mail boxes, made thisevent the most successful in Yuma Post Of ceHistory. As a matter of fact, its the largest fooddrive in Crossroads history. A special thanks toBob Carey, Mail Carrier, for his work in organizingthe event for us! Bless all of you.Mothers Day didnt nd us idle either! RubenDominguez, The Gentleman Tenor, donated hisspecial vocal talent and humor in a performancefor mothers at Post Auditorium. Many supportersand families gathered for the event. The silent

auction had many collectibles, treasurers, antiques, and fun gifts for all genders and ages. This eventwas made possible by our friend Lori Hauk. Lorientered a contest about career makeovers and shewon $5000 for the charity of her choice. Fox 9,KECY, took that one step further and paid for the auditorium for the event. With advertising, ticket sales, and lots of other promotions we weredelighted to provide a quality event featuringRubens beautiful tenor voice singing several operaselections along with some golden crooner tunes. We thank the many, many sponsors for this eventand a special thanks to ABC5-KECY, AmericanDream Edition, and El Sol Travel who provideda $900 travel package to Catalina Island. Folkscommented on how this type of entertainmentshould be offered more often to the Yumacommunity! HmmIn the midst of all of the events, our importantwork continues. We continue to offer services tothe homeless and the addicted as well as the poor and needy of our county. For the past two yearswe have been conducting a small capital campaignto renovate our kitchen. Im happy to announcethe project started and we will be announcing agrand opening some time in the near future. Finally, we have had many supporters who havedone some outstanding things to support theMission since the last newsletter. GenerationsChurch, Beta Sigma Xi Zeta Club, SouthwestPerforming Arts and the Gila Mountain UnitedMethodist Church quilters as well as many others.Thank you! Please remember that when youdonate to Crossroads, you are an important part of a ministry that changes lives. May God continueto richly bless you and your families!Until next time.

What an affair it was! Ruben Dominguez proved to be a crowd favorite when after

almost two hours of singing, he received astanding ovation andrequests for an encore.

He, of course, pleased hisaudience with one more opera

song this past Mothers Day at PostAuditorium. It was an afternoon to

remember! Ruben sang legendary songs in English,Spanish, and Italian - a mix of cultures that was re ectiveof our community and our event. It was all possible because of Lori Houk. She submittedan essay about her need for a career makeover to ExtremeMakeover Local Edition from ABC5. She won the contestand received $5,000 for her makeover, and $5,000 for the charity of her choice. Lori chose Crossroads andthe money was immediately put to work in hopes of multiplying it through this special event.ABC5 was instrumental in making it happen. They ranlots of publicity and helped in all the planning. Becauseof them we even had a trip giveaway to Catalina Island,

    sponsored by El Sol Travel.Our Advisory Council and many volunteers were veryinvolved as well. With their help we had a very successfulsilent auction and several door prizes were given.We are exited about engaging in new fundraisingopportunities to raise funds towards a new family shelter.We are honored and thankful to have been chosen by Loriand to be blessed with the support of our community. Weare also very grateful to Ruben for donating his talent andhis time to make this a true family affair! ABOVE: Top - Lori Hauk;

STUFFED GREEN PEPPERSEnjoy this easy recipe for a delicious and

nutritious main dish. This is one of the manymain dishes that we serve at our dinning room.

    INGREDITENTS:

Let the remodeling begin! After almost two years of fundraising the kitchenis nally set to start its remodeling! Gettinghere has not been easy. Besides the obvious nancialchallenges, the logistics of a major kitchen remodel at a

place that serves almost 400 meals per day, everyday of

the year, was overwhelming at times.

Part of the problem was being able to maintain thekitchen services without the kitchen. We searched andsearched and thanks to Yuma Proving Ground we foundour solution: a eld kitchen that is temporarily parkedoutside the dining room. Meals are being cooked in itand our guests are able to take their plates inside to thedining room.

The project will cost less than $150,000

and it will be a major renovation; wallswill be torn down and moved, and newused appliances will be installed. Wethank you for your donations to make it

    possible!

    Refecting on Relationships

    R ecently ananonymousdonor walked into

Crossroads and blessed the Missionwith a signi cantcash donation. Thisindividual had no

desire for personal recognitionof any kind, only to decisivelyannounce their deepest belief thatGods work was in progress here.Leaving as quickly as arriving, our staff was inspired by this donors

desire to transact this gift of loveof our Lord towards the work doneat Crossroads Mission. What anhonor to be blessed by someone sodedicated to a relationshipwith God.

For many of us an itemizednancial statement of stewardship

helps us to set goals and re ect onfaith in action. Often tax dollarsturned into stewardship dollars

can be multiplied by pledgedocuments, donation receipts, andestate planning. God is looking atthe heart. For where your heartis, there lies your treasure. Your relationship with God encompassesall. Help Us Help Them!

We cant do anything about the weather but we can

do things to help the homeless. If you are a Yuma native you know that if youre outin the heat is absolutely necessary to stay hydrated- its a matter of life or death. In fact, its notuncommon to see people carrying water bottleseverywhere they go. Have you ever stopped tothink how the homeless stay hydrated? This summer, as in summers past, we take

bottles of water to the homeless along theriver. Our river outreach is structured to helpthose homeless people who might not be

aware of the services offered by the Mission. We want to get them to come to the Missionso we can begin case managementservices. With a simple bottle of water, were ableto make a connection to someone whoneeds help. In the past, we have receivedcomplaints about why the homeless cantdrink water from the faucet since bottledwater is so expensive. The homeless dodrink water from the faucet and anywherethey can get it --sometimes from not sohealthy places. In addition to our river outreach, cool water is always available at our shelters to re llempty water bottles or other containers. We do not want anyone to die because of dehydration.

Hydration is a MUST in this

The highlight of the evening was when four of Crossroadsformer clients shared their testimonies about life atCrossroads and life after Crossroads. Audra Kissel, Heather Berry, Yvonne Parker, and Claudia Lugo openly told aboutwhat circumstances brought them to Crossroads and howtheir lives were affected. Each woman is living in victory.Thank you, ladies! Your willingness to be so open helped

people to understand how Crossroads helps to change lives.

This event celebrated our 50th year of operations and was amajor fund raiser for the new family shelter. By the end of the evening, friends of the Mission pledged and gave cashtotalling $118,000! The Crossroads Mission Family Shelter has been open since 1994. This facility was built in 1948and is at capacity every day of the year. Each night we have

people sleeping on the oors because there isnt enough bed space. A new shelter is greatly needed so that we can provide, not only a more shelter-friendly environment, butone where we can increase case management and counselingservices to those families, single women, single fathers, and

women in the recovery program who seek services at theMission.

God bless each of you for participating!

I t got bad enough for me to ght back and thats how I ended up in probation, says Heather about her abusive marriage. Forthree years the violence grew greater and heraddiction to drugs became stronger. That is whyHeather came to Crossroads Mission.

Using drugs was nothing new to Heather, now34. I started using at age 13 - everything:meth, alcohol, coke. Im the third generationof alcoholics and addicts in my family so prettymuch thats what I knew.

In 2004, Heather completed the Recoveryprogram and went to live at the Family Shelter. There she was able to be reunited with her twosons, now 14 and 17. Heather, her sons, and hermother lived at the shelter for almost 9 months.

Everything is different today! I have Jesus inmy life. He has lled my heart so much. I feellove in a way I didnt use to. I love myself morebecause of Him. Hes restored my relationshipswith my mother and my children - they believein my words again! My future is bright. I knowin my heart I can do anything. I can accomplishmy dreams and make them into reality!

Heather now works at Crossroads Missionas the Finance Coordinator. She is attendingcollege and working towards a degree inBusiness Management. Her accomplishmentseven earned her a tuition scolarship fromSoroptimist International. Her future is bright!
