Breaking Bread! News from Emmaus House of Harlem

Thank you for your continued support of Emmaus House of Harlem. Whether you have been around for years, or are new to our ever growing circle of friends and supporters, we welcome you. Established in 1968 by the late Fr. David Kirk, the work of Emmaus House continues as we continue to serve some of the most vulnerable and needy in our community. With no paid staff the work of Emmaus continues at the work of our hands, your hands and ours.

The financial support which we receive from friends just like you makes up over 85% of our annual budget, and no amount is insignificant or too little. It all adds up, and all of it makes sure that the increasing number of people who come to our door are fed, clothed, and given the resources they need to lead more sustainable lives in this global community. I know that many of you gave through the holidays, and for that we are thankful. Please take a moment to take a look at the reverse side of this letter to see a list of the work which your contribution made possible.

However, please know that our responsibility to the community we serve continues year round. So, before the adventure of the summer months kicks in I would invite you to remember Emmaus. Even if you can’t be with us at the House, carry us with you in your thoughts and prayers. I would also challenge you to consider, according to your financial ability, to match the contribution which you made through the holidays. What was it $20, $50, $100, $200, $500, $1,000? Did you miss it, or did it feel great to be a part of this tremendous legacy and ministry? Given what we have been able to do with your contribution in the past twelve months, just think of what we can do together in the weeks and months ahead. Again, thank you.

Emmaus House of Harlem is a member organization of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The Association

of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is an association of fundraising professionals throughout the world, advancing philanthropy by empowering people and organizations to practice ethical and effective fundraising. As a member

agency, Emmaus House of Harlem subscribes to the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards and promotes

the Donor Bill of Rights which may be viewed by visiting www.afpnet.org/ethics. Financial records including our most recent IRS 990, Char 500, and a certified financial

Friends of Emmaus,

We are growing. Since this time last year we have:+ Increased the number of clients served by 60%, from an average of

2,000 clients per month to an average of 3,200 clients per month.+ Operated two client choice Market Days per week, distributing 149,000

pounds of food thanks to our partner agencies City Harvest, Corbin Hill Farm Project, and il Caffe Latte.

+ Thanks to Penguin Random House and City Harvest we Distributed 275 Market Day Boxes at Thanksgiving which included a turkey and

sides.+ Cultivated a committed team of volunteers who have contributed

6,468 hours of service.+ Received a grant through the Wider Church Fund of the Metropolitan

Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to support programs and services in the amount of $25,000.

+ Distributed over 200 gifts at Christmas to neighborhood children thanks to the Department of Philanthropy of the Greek Orthodox

Archdiocese of North and South America.

+ Established an interactive ESL/SSL (English as a Second Language/Spanish as a Second Language) Program with over 35 participants.

+ Attended a series of four workshops at Community Resource Exchange on Board Governance, Finances & Budgets, Program

Development, and Grant Writing for nonprofit organizations in New York State.

+ Visited other Emmaus communities in Maine, England, and France to learn more about their work with thrift and the philosophy of

communities of Emmaus International worldwide.+ Expanded the intentional community from four to eight members,

including the addition of a Director of Programs and Services to compliment the work of our Executive Director and Director of

Advancement and Stewardship.

+ Assembled 500 toiletry kits for those we serve, thanks to wonderful volunteers from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in

Crestwood, New York.
