On Sept. 17, the new Extreme Sports Park makes its debut when Port Angeles hosts the U.S. Sprint Boat Association National Finals. Here are some tips for first-time spectators.
Watching a sprint boat race can be exhilarating.
As you turn into the Extreme Sports Park, you will see the main entrance gates and parking attendants directing you.
Parking is $1 with the parking money going to the Port Angeles High School parking attendants.
At the entrance gates, you can purchase tickets and get your wristband, which will provide you access to the races all day.
Purchasing your tickets in advance will move you to the fast line to get your wristband.
General admission tickets cost $15.A pit pass ticket that provides you with
admission plus access to the pits where the drivers, navigators and boats are located costs $20.
Children 6 and younger are free. You can bring in food, picnic baskets,
coolers and bags, but all these items will be searched at the gate.
To enhance the “family friendly” nature of the event, no outside alcohol is al-
lowed in Extreme Sports Park. There is a beer garden available for those who are 21 and older.
ChildrenIf you have small children in your
group, bring along a toy or two.Racing doesn’t seem to hold their atten-
tion and you will be able to enjoy more of the racing if you bring a bag of tricks to entertain them.
SeatingSelect your spot to sit. There are safety
fences all around the track (so sitting with your toes in the water is not an option).
Two sides of the track are terraced grass for general seating. There are desig-nated areas for EZ-Up style canopies.
Feel free to bring your camp chairs or blankets to make sitting on the grass comfortable. Arena bleachers can hold 500 spectators, while the grass seating can hold an additional 6,000 people.

Sprint boat racing is a timed race through a maze of channels that are three feet deep.
The night before the race at the Show & Shine Tech Event (held at Price Ford Lincoln, see Page 7),the rotation through the channels is released to the race teams.
For the national finals in Port Angeles, there are four possible rotations, which are found on Page 9.
By waiting until the evening before to announce which rotation they will use, teams are prevented from having an unfair advantage.
DNF, DNQ & DNSAll boats have four chances to qualify
for the elimination race in the afternoon. Each boat has a strict requirement to
be in line and get in the water on time. If there is trouble for some reason, they
are put on a 5 minute clock. If they can’t resolve the problem in 5 minutes, they
get a DNS or Did Not Start. All the boats will be running the same
rotation through the track. If a boat misses a turn or doesn’t com-
plete the course in the designated path, they get a DNF or Did Not Finish.
If a boat comes out of the water, as soon as the safety crew touches the boat, they also get a DNF.
If the boat is only out of the water a little bit, you may see the driver wave off the safety crew at first so the driver and navigator can attempt to shimmy and shake the boat back into the water.
After four tries, if a boat does not com-plete the course in the right rotation, it gets a DNQ or Did Not Qualify.
After the qualification runs, the boats with the top eight times in each class move on to eliminations.
The eight boats take their first elimina-tion run. The fastest four boats to com-plete the rotation accurately move on.
The four run a second time, and the slowest two are cut.
Finally, the last two boats run a third and final time to determine first and second place.
Boat ClassesThere are three classes of boats, mainly
determined by their engine size. The largest group of boats is the Super
Modified class. The Super Mods are boats up to 367 cubic inches (cid).
The middle group is the A-400 class with engines from 368 to 412 cid.
The fastest boats are the Super Boats (also called the Unlimiteds class) with engines from 350 cid to 419 cid that are mechanically fuel injected or multi car-bureted, running on methanol.
Super boats with engines 420 cid and higher have no restrictions.
These are just the very basics of the sprint boat classes.
To see all the specific class factors like fuel, induction and heads, visit the U.S. Spring Boat Association website at www.ussbaracing.com.
SafetyThe main focus of the race rules is safety. The safety of the drivers starts with
their gear. All drivers are in a full fire suit with neck restraint and helmet.
Then they are strapped into the boat with a 5-point harness and a strap to restrain their outside arm.
This setup has prevented many driv-ers and navigators from receiving injuries when their boats roll while missing a turn.
There is also a safety crew inside the track positioned along the sides and on the islands. They are there to push the boats back in the water when they get beached.
You can see them run fast if a boat lands upside down.
ABCs and DNFs of sprint boat racing written by Kary Brown
The largest group of sprint boats is the Super Modified class, which are boats up to 367 cubic inches. Pictured here is TNT Racing’s Super Modified boat, driven by Dillon Brown Cummings with navigator Teri Cummings.
DID YOU KNOW? Sprint boat racing began in New Zealand and the first races were held in shallow rivers. The use of artificial tracks didn’t start until Australia picked up the sport.

VendorsThere is a short intermission around lunch time.
You may bring your own lunch, but you will also find a tasty selection of food vendors from which to choose.
Near the food vendors will be an additional group of vendors selling race team apparel. Here’s where you can pick up a shirt from the U.S. Sprint Boat Association (USSBA), one of the local teams like Wicked, Twisted or TNT, or maybe even one with a funny name like Two Pump Chump.
Take your shirt in to the pits and have the drivers and navigators sign the shirts. They are all willing to visit with fans.
In the pits, you may also find drivers who have small posters that they are passing out. Most will sign them for you while you visit and check out the boat.
No matter what, it’s sure to be a FANtastic day!Twisted Motorsports navigator Nicole Brown signs the shirt of a young fan at Webbs Slough in St. John, Wash.

In August, Wicked Racing (#01) driver Dan Morrison and navigator Cara McGuire claimed the title of 2011 National Champion for the Super Boats class, having ac-cumulated enough points to clinch the title.
The point system of sprint boat racing is similar to the point structure of other motorsports, with the fastest qualifier receiving the most points throughout the season.
As of August, Wicked Racing’s other boat (#01), with
driver Doug Hendrickson and navigator Hannah Macke, led the A-400 class, with TNT Racing’s Paul and Josh Gahr behind them.
As of publication, there was still one more race before the national finals in Port Angeles. For an up-to-date list of points and standings and for more information about sprint boat racing, visit the U.S. Spring Boat Association website at ussbaracing.com.

Show & Shine, tech event Sept. 16
On Friday, Sept. 16, come to the free Sprint Boat Show & Shine and Tech Event. The event is scheduled from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Price Ford Lincoln, 1527 E. Front St., Port Angeles.
It will also be broadcast live on KONP.Attendees can meet the drivers and navigators
of the teams, take pictures with the teams and see these boats before they go in the water.
The Show & Shine event is when race teams sign in and register. Organizers expect 30 boats from four states and Canada to compete in the finals.
The tech inspector goes through the boats to ensure that they meet the standards and safety rules for racing.
Drivers and navigators also receive their all-important course routes, which they have to memorize.
The announcer for race day will also be there visiting with the teams and doing interviews.
But most importantly, it’s a time to get to know the race teams!
See the boats up close, meet the teams and take pictures the night before the races!
Wayne Brown, driver for Twisted Motorsports (#18) talks with a veteran outside the VA Hospital in Portland, Ore., during a Show & Shine event in July. Twisted and other teams participated in the event and got to tour some of the patient floors, visit with veterans, hand out pictures and talk about racing. When not out racing, the teams often visit different organizations and hold similar Show & Shine events.
DID YOU KNOW?Despite the fast speeds, occasional mishaps and “extreme sport” designation, sprint boat racing has strict standards that make it one of the safest motorsports. No one has ever died in the sport and the most severe injury has been a broken bone.
The Extreme Sports Park’s track is comprised of six islands. It is set in a clay base (prevents water seepage) and filled via wells on the ESP property.

The TrackSprint boat tracks are man-made courses
approximately 14 feet wide that hold 3 to 4 feet of water.
A boat comprised of a driver and a navigator has to race against the clock as they maneuver through the watery course built around a maze of islands.
The Port Angeles track is designed to be the fastest in the sprint boat circuit, allowing speeds up to 100 miles per hour in some spots.
Other Northwest tracks are located in St. John, Wash., East Wenatchee, Wash., and Albany, Ore.
While there is only one track, there are different course routes. The driver and navigator are given a map the night before the race, which shows the route they have to take.
They have to memorize the course, which they’ll be traveling through at 90 miles per hour.
They do not get to practice before the qualifica-tion runs.
The driver must rely on the navigator, who com-municates directions through hand signals.
Mere seconds and accuracy count!
Track RotationsAs the boats make their way through the
course, follow along with this layout of the track.Pretty soon you’ll know when they’ve missed
a turn as it happens, or which spots have been troublesome for the teams!

Although the North Olympic Peninsula has not had a sprint boat race track until the new Extreme Sports Park, Clallam County is home to three sprint boat racing teams.
While these people spend their days working at their various jobs, they’ve found time to earn recognition and top spots as sprint boat drivers and navigators.
Wicked Racing’s Dan Morrison and Cara McGuire of Port Angeles already won the 2011 champion-ship in the Super Boats class in August, even with a couple races left in the season.
TNT Racing’s Dillon Brown Cummings and Teri Cummings of Sequim were the 2010 national champions in the Super Modified class.
A newcomer to the sprint boat racing circuit that is quickly earning recognition, Twisted Motorsports, has only been racing for a few months.
Driver Wayne Brown of Port Angeles once raced stock cars in Port Angeles and dragsters in Forks and Bremerton, but he finds sprint boat racing “one of the most intense things ever.”
For another comparison, Wayne notes that one of his competitors, an F-18 fighter pilot, finds driving a sprint boat even more intense than flying a fighter plane.
While it normally takes a couple of years to get the hang of sprint boat driving, Twisted Motorsports seems to have picked it up quickly, perhaps thanks to Wayne’s years of experience at driving race cars.
Seeing the races in personFor all these teams, seeing a race in person is what
got them hooked on the sport.

In 2006, Wicked Racing’s Dan Mor-rison and TNT Racing’s Tim Cummings went to Woodland, Wash., to check out the “extreme sport” of sprint boat rac-ing they had heard about and seen on the Internet.
Being quad and jet ski racers, it had appealed to them and within an hour of watching, they were hooked.
They both wanted to buy a boat and start racing. By the next year, they had followed through on those goals.
“The rest is history,” says Dan.Twisted’s Wayne Brown got hooked
when he saw a sprint boat race in St. John, Wash., in 2010.
After later seeing the national champi-onship with his wife, “on the way home we decided to buy a boat,” he says.
With his daughter, Nicole, as navigator, the whole family is involved in the team.
Wicked Racing’s Dan and Cara are another father-daughter racing duo, with mom and wife Kelie providing the “jack of all trades” support, from sales and promotions to filming races.
“Since we started this, it’s been very family oriented,” Kelie says. “It’s great to be able to do this together.”
Family involvement is also a theme with TNT Racing, who have many ex-tended family members playing a role.
Tim’s son, Dillon, is a competing driver in the Super Modified class, while Tim’s wife and Dillon’s step-mom, Teri, serves as the navigator.
Dillon started driving at the age of 16 and was the youngest driver on the circuit.
Now 19, he is still the youngest driver.Another boat of TNT Racing is
maneuvered by driver Paul Gahr Jr. — brother-in-law to Tim and Teri — and his navigator son, Josh.
As of publication, they had already taken two checkered flags this year and were eying the national champion posi-tion in the A400 class.
Port Angeles trackAfter years of traveling to Eastern
Washington and Oregon for races, Dan started to think about having a track closer to home.
Having something “on this side of the mountains” would also help out the other local racers who were traveling just as much, and help grow the sport overall.
Sprint boat racing has been a popular sport in New Zealand and Australia for decades, but its presence in the United States is more recent.
“Sprint boat racing is on the ground floor of the U.S., but it’s picking up momentum and gaining recognition,” Dan explains.
Construction on what would become the Extreme Sports Park began in October 2010, with many businesses and people in the community offering their help to get the track up and running.
While the national finals is the only sprint boat race scheduled on the track this year, organizers expect to hold at least two races a year in the future, plus other possible extreme sports.
From left, Paul Gahr Jr. with his dad, Paul Gahr Sr., and son, Josh Gahr, when the younger Gahrs captured their first checkered flag this year.
