Welcome To the Spring Careers & Placements Fair 2012
To get the most out of the fair bear the following tips
in mind:
Take a moment to look at the Fair Guide and
decide which stands you most want to visit
Scan the list of exhibitors to quickly find which
employers are recruiting into the jobs you are
interested in
Not sure what you want? Check which exhibitors
want to recruit you by scanning down the ‘degree
required’ field. Many employers are interested in
people from any discipline
Decide what you want from each employer you
visit; this could be a piece of insider knowledge
about the profession, tips on interview technique,
an employer opinion of your CV or even an
interview. Employers don’t come all this way just
to give out freebies!
Clarify what questions you need answers to. If
you’re researching your career options, general
questions such as “what do you do in a typical
working day?” might help. If you’re already set
and need to impress, rehearse your key selling
points (skills and experiences that will impress

employers) and try and relate these to the
employer’s requirements.
Want to discuss placement opportunities, come to
Room 104 and see one of our Placement and
Development Officers for more advice
Subjects you could ask about:
Nature of the work and its attractions
Selection criteria and skills needed to do the job
Unique features of the organisation
The organisation’s strengths
Culture and atmosphere of the organisation
A typical day
Training available and related support
Level of responsibility given
Opportunities in the future
Why employer representatives like/chose their
job/career
Highs and lows of employer representatives’
career
Vacancies and details
Location and working conditions

FAQs
1) I don’t know what sort of job I want
If you don’t know what you want, visit the Careers
Centre (1st Floor, Carrington Building) or use the fair to
quiz employers about the kind of jobs they offer. All you
need to do is to develop a couple of questions and put
together some words to say who you are and what you
are looking for.
2) Do I need to have my CV with me?
Only hand over your CV to an employer if you think it
sells you well in relation to what a particular employer is
looking for. It is unlikely you will need it for the Autumn
Fair where employers are not recruiting for you to start
right away.
3) I don’t know if my CV/application is good
enough
Drop into the Careers Centre and find out about our
range of workshops and how you can talk to a Careers
Adviser or Placement & Development Officer to check
things out.
4) Do I need to dress smartly?
You don’t need a suit for this event. Of course if you are
targeting particular employers looking reasonably smart
might help. But it is more important that you know
something about them before approaching their stand.
5) Will I be interviewed on the spot?
No, you won’t be formally interviewed on the spot. But
be aware some employers may use an informal chat to
“check you out” as someone they would like to apply. So
while you can certainly use the fair to find out what
Student Employment, Experience and Careers Centre
©University of Reading 2012 Friday, 24 February 2012 Page 4
employers have on offer if you are interested in
particular employers always look at their website and
find out something about them before approaching their
stand.
6) How can I impress an employer that I’d like a
job with?
See our top tips… and be professional, polite and
interested.
What if you can’t find a job/recruiter or placement
that interests you?
The Careers Centre has invited a range of recruiters to
attend this fair. Despite our efforts, certain sectors
simply do not attend such fairs, and some employers are
not actively recruiting.
If your area of interest isn’t represented then check out
our career information at
http://www.reading.ac.uk/seecc/careersinfo/ or come
along to the Careers Centre and ask to talk to a Careers
Adviser or a Placement Development Officer to get advice
on how to track down such vacancies and placements.
Make the most of the Fair – and best of luck in your career search.
