Program NotesJerry Williams (Arrowhead Overture) - A very talented writer and musician, Jerry Williams has many best selling titles for young bands. Williams was blessed with delightful sense of humor which was reflected in many of his compositions. His first publication came in 1985 with his popular “Free Spirit Overture.” He was also co-writer of the “Command Performance Band Book” and he composed over 50 popular band compositions including: “Jingle Bells Around The World,” “H2Overture,” “Deck The Halls With Old Composers” and “When The Saints March Around The World”. Mr. Williams lost his battle with cancer in 2001.Arrowhead Overture : A simple yet effective piece with a slight southwestern flavor. Scored to be played with reduced instrumentation and contains a number of percussion parts to keep even the larger percussion sections busy. A delightful overture that is a favorite for concert and contest performances everywhere.

John Edmondson (Song for Winds) - Born February 3, 1933. John Edmondson received his BA from the University of Florida and his MM in Composition from the University of Kentucky, studying with Kenneth Wright and R. Bernard Fitzgerald. He taught public school music in the central Kentucky region for ten years, during which he wrote extensively for his own students. At this same time, he was the staff arranger for the University of Kentucky Wildcat Marching Band, and also arranged for several other universities and regional high school marching bands. In addition to freelance composing and arranging, John was a professional trumpet player and pianist, and developed his own educational publishing firm. Edmondson became a freelance writer for seven years, during which time he contributed over three hundred publications to the catalogs of many publishers.

James Swearingen (Ashton Overture) - James Swearingen’s talents as a performer, composer/arranger and educator include a background of extensive training and experience. He has earned degrees from Bowling Green State University and The Ohio State University. Mr. Swearingen is currently Professor of Music, Department Chair of Music Education and one of several resident composers at Capital University located in Columbus, Ohio. He also serves as a staff arranger for the famed Ohio State University Marching Band. With over 450 published works, he has written band compositions and arrangements that reflect a variety of musical forms and styles. He joined The Ameri-can Bandmasters Association, considered to be the most prestigious bandmaster organization in the world. Many of Mr. Swearingen’s most popular band compositions have been recorded by the prestigious Washington Winds.

Claude T. Smith (1932 - 1987) (Emerata Overture) - Smith was born in Monroe City, Missouri and started his musical career playing trumpet in the fifth grade. He attended Central Methodist College until he was drafted into the Army during the Korean Conflict, where he won a position with the 371st Army Band. Smith finished his under-graduate studies at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He taught instrumental music in Nebraska and Missouri junior and senior high schools, later teaching composition and conducting the orchestra at Southwest Missouri State University. During his career, he composed over 120 works for band, chorus, orchestra, and small ensembles.

John Barnes Chance (Variantions on a Korean Folk Song) - A Texas native, John Barnes Chance was born in Beaumont in 1932. He played percussion in high school and started composing. Attending the University of Texas, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music, studying under Clifton Williams. After graduation, he began a three year tour of duty in the Army service bands as a percussionist and arranger. He wrote seven pieces for school ensembles including Incantation and Dance. In 1966, his Variations on a Korean Folk Song received the Ostwald Award from the American Bandmasters Association. He was appointed to the faculty of the University of Kentucky, where he was later appointed head of the theory-composition program. In 1972, Chance’s promising career was cut short when he died from cardiac arrest after a tent pole accidentally contacted an electrified fence in his backyard.Variations on a Korean Folk Song: While stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea in the late 50’s, Chance became fascinated by the popular folk melody Arirang, using it as the basis for his Variations on a Korean Folk Song. Arirang is traditional Korean song of love and heartbreak that can be found in many variations, with an origin that may date back 1000 years. The pentatonic (5 tone) theme is heard at the outset of this composition and is contrasted with five variations.

Norman Dello Joio (Satiric Dances) - Norman Dello Joio descends from a long line of Italian church organ-ists. Born in New York City in 1913, he received musical training from his father, an organist and a coach for the Metropolitan Opera. He began working as a church organist and choirmaster at the age of 12. In 1939, he received a scholarship to study at the Juilliard School of Music. Believing that composition suited his interests best, Dello Joio studied under Paul Hindemith at Tanglewood and the Yale School of Music. He began his teaching at Sarah Lawrence College, became a professor of composition at Mannes College (1956-72), and professor of music and dean of the Fine and Applied Arts School of Boston University (1972-9). A prolific composer, Dello Joio has written for chorus, orchestra, and band, along with many works for solo instruments. His accolades include the Pulitzer Prize in 1957 for Meditations on Ecclesiastes and an Emmy Award for The Louvre in 1965.

Satiric Dances: was commissioned by the Concord Band, Massachusetts, to commemorate the Bicentennial of April 19, 1775. Dello Joio, then Dean of Boston University’s School for the Arts, based the commission on a piece first used as background music for a comedy by Aristophanes. The comic dramatist of ancient Greece, Aristophanes was born an Athenian citizen about 445 BC. His plays commented on the political and social issues of fifth century Athens and frequently employed satire. The first dance movement is annotated as allegro pesante. The brass entry signifies the importance of the work, but the brisk tempo keeps the simplicity of “peasantry’’ from being ponderous. Taking a much slower adagio mesto tempo, the second dance begins with a melancholy tune from the flutes and low brass. Without a break in the music, the final movement is introduced by rolls from the snare drum. The tempo is indicated as allegro spumante and is the fastest of the composition. The quick turns and dynamics evoke images of the objects that were the titles of Aristophanes’ plays: Clouds, Wasps, and Birds.

Alfred Reed (Armenian Dances) - Alfred Reed was born in New York City on January 25, 1921. His formal music training began at the age of 10 by studing the trumpet. As a teenager, he played with small hotel combos in the Catskill Mountains. His interests shifted from performing to arranging and composition. In 1938, he started working in the Radio Workshop in New York as a staff composer/arranger and assistant conductor. With the onset of World War II, he enlisted in the Army. During his three and a half years of service, he produced nearly 100 compo-sitions and arrangements for band. After his discharge, Reed enrolled at the Juilliard School of Music and studied composition with Vittorio Giannini. In 1953, he enrolled at Baylor University, serving as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra while he earned the Bachelor of Music degree (1955). He then received his Master of Music degree. He became a professor of music at the University of Miami, where he served until his retirement in 1993. He continued to compose and made numerous appearances as guest conductor in many nations, most notably in Japan. At the age of 84, Alfred Reed passed away after a short illness.Armenian Dances (Part I): In his Armenian Dances, Alfred Reed has captured many of the styles, tempos, and subtleties of the Armenian folk songs and dances. Part I, completed in 1972, is based on five authentic Armenian folksongs drawn from the collection of Gomidas Vartabed (1869 - 1935). Gomidas has been credited as the founder of Armenian classical music for his work on preserving and documenting over four thousand folk songs. The open-ing (The Apricot Tree) is a sentimental song with a declamatory beginning. The Partidge’s Song is an original song by Gomidas. Its simple, delicate melody was intended for a children’s choir and is symbolic of that bird’s tiny steps. A young man sings the praises of his beloved (named Nazan) in the lovely, lively love song Hoy, My Nazan. Alagyaz is the name of a mountain in Armenia represented by a beloved folk song that is as majestic as the mountain itself. Part I ends with a humorous laughing-song (Go, Go!) with an accelerating tempo.

Peter Ilyich Tchaikowsky (Three Dances from the Maid of Orleans) - Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, Russia, in 1840. He studied law and at 19 started worked as a clerk with the Ministry of Justice. He resigned his post after 4 years to pursue his interest in music at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1866, he went to Moscow, where he was appointed professor of harmony at the new Conservatory. He completed his First Symphony there, along with the opera The Voyevode. In 1869, he completed his ballet Romeo and Juliet on an outline suggested by Balakirev. New inspirations flowed with his second symphony (Little Russian), three operas, a third symphony (Polish), and the Piano Concerto in B flat. Following a disastrous marriage of just 9 weeks, Tchaikovsky attempted suicide and suf-fered a mental breakdown. Shortly afterward, a wealthy widow, Madame von Meck, became his patron and gave him an annual salary but on the condition that they never meet. Tchaikovsky recovered financially, but not spiritually. He enjoyed a visit to the United States, where he conducted his works for the opening of Carnegie Hall in 1891. Shortly after the premiere of his Pathétique symphony, he drank contaminated water, some evidence suggests intentionally in a state of depression, and died of cholera on November 6, 1893.

Nicholas Rimsky-Korsakov (Russia, 1844 - 1908) (Festival of Baghdad) - He was born into an aristocratic family in Tikhvin. As a child, he was exposed to folk songs sung by his mother and bells and singing of the monks in the Monastery across the river from his home. The folk melodies would later appear in his Maid of Pskov and Tsar Sultan, while the monastery bells would sound in his Russian Easter Overture, and the monks’ cries to gather the hay are heard in the Snow Maiden. At the age of twelve, he enrolled at the Naval College of St. Petersburg, where he received instruction in piano and cello along with his naval studies. At 17 he was persuaded to study composition. He wanted to give Russia a distinguished musical voice, and composed his first symphony while on a three-year naval cruise. This score and others that followed drew attention to this brilliant young composer. While still in the Navy, he was appointed as professor of composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Self taught and normally working by ear, the new professor became the Conservatory’s best pupil as he studied harmony, counterpoint, and musical anal-ysis to keep a step ahead of his pupils. His music, for the most part, is joyous; his rich orchestrations are evident in his Scheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol. In 1899, a traveling Richard Wagner inspired Rimsky-Korsakov to devote himself almost entirely to operas, of which he was to compose fourteen, with The Golden Cockerel being his last.
