Superintendent’s MessageHappy “March-ing” Entrance into Spring! After

the winter months, we all begin looking forward to longer days, blue skies and sunshine and, I hope the end of typical winter illnesses. In our building we have been struggling with some very serious colds, stomach bugs and unfortunately, some confirmed cases of the flu. Again, the entrance of spring always seems to bring a bit of relief from all of this illness.

March also is a time when several reminders need to go out to all. Please take note of the following:

“MONTH OF MARCH REMINDERS”• Reminder #1: Absences from School—When-

ever your child is absent from school please do two things: Call the main office to notify us and also send in a note for documentation. If your child has a doctor/dentist/orthodontist/etc. appointment the office personnel will provide you with a written excuse to present to the school. If your child is ill and needs to stay home, a call and then written note when they return is needed and very much appreciated! College visits—same procedure please!

• Reminder #2: Changes in Dismissal Proce-dures—Whenever you need to make a change in how your child is to be dismissed please call the office by 2:30 p.m. A lot is happening here at the end of the day. The main office and teachers are trying to address every request received and we do not want to make a mistake. Remember to call the main office by 2:30 p.m. at the latest for changes in the normal procedure for a regular dismissal.

• Reminder #3: New Phone Numbers—Please be sure to notify the school whenever your phone number changes. There may be a time when we need to contact you about your child so we always need to have your most up-to-date phone information.

2019-2020 SCHOOL BUDGET AND COMMUNITY BUDGET MEETINGS• 2019-2020 School Budget—March is typically the month when

we start providing information about the upcoming year’s school budget. As of this writing we are still waiting for specific infor-mation from the state, but I can provide basic information about the budget being prepared for next year. Please note:

• Tax Levy Limit—As in years past, we will continue to work at putting forth a budget with the goal of staying at or under our Tax Levy Limit, as well as meeting the criteria established for the Property Tax Freeze Credit for property owners. Our district has always stayed under the tax levy limit and intends to do so for the upcoming school year.

• Vehicle Purchase—For several years now we have worked at maintaining a 7-8 year bus replacement and/or purchase sched-ule. We have found that this cycle is the most cost effective with regard to bus maintenance and trade-in values. In addition, we continue to pay for our buses out of a bus reserve, resulting in NO impact on the tax levy. This year we are looking to purchase one 48 passenger bus and one 42 passenger bus with accommoda-tions for 2 wheelchairs to be used for transporting both regular and special education students.

• Capital Improvement Projects—There will be NO capital projects on the ballot this year. We will, however, be continuing with our planned Capital Outlay program. The Capital Outlay Program, which we have presented to our voters for the past 6 years, allows school to budget funds for maintaining and upgrad-ing facilities on a regular basis as opposed to letting a lot of small issues go until they reach a critical mass or problem. Compare it to redoing a room one at a time in your house as opposed to letting things go and having to complete a major renovation.

• New York State Voting Day—In New York State all schools will vote on the upcoming year’s school budget on the third Tuesday in May. This year’s budget voting day will therefore be Tuesday, May 21st. Our polls will be open from 11:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. We will be voting on the budget and the bus purchases described above.

School Community Budget Meeting and Public HearingEvery year the district holds a Community Budget meeting for the purpose of presenting the budget for the

upcoming school year to residents in an effort to receive input from all members of our community regarding the budget before the Board makes their final decisions. The Community Budget Meeting will be held on April 10th from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the MPR. Community input on the budget is an important focus of this meeting. A second meeting, the required “Public Hearing” will be held on May 7th, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the MPR, at which time the final proposed budget will be presented.

New York State AssessmentsNYS 3-8 Assessments: The NYS Assessment system has been

under a great deal of debate over the past few years. This debate has centered on our state’s implementation of the Common Core Curriculum and Standards, and Teacher Growth Scores. As a way of voicing one’s position on these two items, many parents decided to “opt out”; meaning that their children were directed not to take the assessments.

While I, and I would imagine, everyone reading this article, have no problem with increased educational standards and rigor for our students, the debate over the implementation of these standards has been nothing short of a complete debacle; a debacle for teachers, and most importantly, for students. As a result, our new Commissioner of Education, MaryEllen Elia, has listened to the field, and made some drastic and important changes: shorter tests, fewer questions, and unlimited testing time for all students.

With all of this in mind, I would ask each of us to focus on the original purpose of the assessments, that being “to help teachers identify individual student strengths and weaknesses, and to use this information to better plan for and prepare instruction.” Our goal is to prepare each and every student to meet the state requirements for graduation. The state assessments are designed to provide information to schools in an effort to improve instruc-tion, therefore our teachers need the information the tests provide.

Parents can help assure that their child will successfully meet the state requirements for graduation by encouraging full par-ticipation with regard to the assessments. Doing so will help us

provide your child with the best possible education; one that they deserve. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of this important issue.

National Honor SocietyOn Saturday, January 26, thirteen of our NHS students

volunteered at Saturday’s Bread in Oneonta. Students helped prepare and serve meals during a four hour shift. We received many compliments about our students—how well-mannered and dressed they were, and how mature and good humored they presented themselves. This volunteer opportunity is in addition to independent projects and a variety of other ser-vice endeavors our students undertake throughout the year. Great job, NHS!

Honesty

News From Share and ShineThe character trait we are focusing on for the month of

March is Honesty! The following “I can” statements can remind us how to be honest each and every day. I can tell the truth. I can keep my word (do what I said I would do). I can admit when I make mistakes. The 1st grade class will be presenting on Friday, March 29th at 1:45 p.m. in the MPR. Grades K-6 attend Share and Shine. Students who have demonstrated honesty at school or on the bus, throughout the month of March, will receive individual awards. Classes can also win awards in their special area classes, in the cafeteria, and even for having the neatest classroom! Parents/Guardians will receive a notice if their child will be getting an award. All are welcome!

& ShineShare CROP News

We are happy to be able to offer Girls on the Run (GOTR) at Laurens Central School. GOTR is an interactive running and life skills program for girls in 3rd-5th grade. GOTR objective is to increase physical activity, self-awareness and sense of achievement. At GOTR everyone learns that it is okay to feel different emotions. Some of us may feel, happy, sad, ener-getic, anxious and more! GOTR we try to show them how to resolve issues and help with decision making. Our ultimate goal is to prepare for GOTR 5k, setting goals with each lesson, practice and challenging themselves.

Our coaches this year will be Ms. Gray (our 5th grade teacher, Stacy Aldrich and Cindy McCarthy). Without volun-teers we could never do this. Thank you from Laurens Central School and CROP after school program.

Good Luck and see you at the finish line!—Mrs. Trujillo

Fun for the Whole Family!

Library NewsAs I am sure you can guess, one of my

favorite leisure activities is to read. Yes, I also spend too much time looking at the same old stuff on social media. But, what I really look forward to is a good book at the end of the day. Often times I hear adults say, “Oh! I wish I had time to read.” This makes me sad and gives me pause to think about the consequences of this statement.

When we, as adults, make time to read, we provide an example for our children as to the value of reading. Sure, many of us have significant responsibilities and very little leisure time. But, I would guess for many of us that screen time has replaced reading time in our lives.

Without a doubt, independent reading is the single most important thing a child can do to ensure their academic success across all areas of the curriculum. When students chose their own books they have agency over their learning. When children read independently they increase obvious skills such vocabulary, fluency, comprehension and stamina. But, they also broaden their world view, develop background knowledge and increase their cultural literacy. Independent reading habits also secure better reading habits at the secondary level.

It is highly recommended that time spent reading for pleasure is built into each school day. “In their examination of 25 years of research examining the results of in-school independent reading programs, Block and Mangieri found that students who spent more time in recre-ational reading activities scored higher on comprehension tests in grades 2, 4, and 8 as well as had higher grade point averages and more sophisticated writing styles.” (The Value of Independent Read-ing: Analysis of Research, Houghton Mifflin). Reading is also a big part of how we learn to write.

As adults we should share an enthusi-asm for reading. We can talk about books we loved as a child and model reading for leisure. During down time, both in school and at home, have students grab a book. Reading—it does a mind good!.

FACS 8 Career and College Exploration Field Trip

On October 9, 2018, the FACS 8 class took a Career and College Exploration field trip. The field trip started at the Foothills Performing Arts Center, where the students took a career assessment to see what careers they would be suited to, and received information on different careers and career clusters. They participated in activities like creating a budget based on a given income and a stations activity where they heard presentations and spoke to people from different career fields, such as health care and law enforcement.

After lunch, the students boarded the school bus again and were taken to SUNY Oneonta for the afternoon portion of the field trip. While at SUNY Oneonta, the students received a tour of some of the buildings on campus and gathered more career information. They heard a presentation from Dr. Jiang Tan, a SUNY Oneonta professor who spoke on careers in video game design and video game artistry, and how to get into the video gaming career world. They also heard from Mr. Douglas Reilly, the Science Discovery Center Director at SUNY Oneonta. Mr. Reilly gave a demonstration of drones and robot rovers and spoke about how these are used to teach a variety of skills including computer programming. He also shared about career paths that would use these technologies.

This field trip was an excellent opportunity that enhanced and enriched the information on careers and the world of work that the students had been investigating in FACS 8.

7th Grade Field Trip to BassettThe 7th grade Health class attended a field trip to Bas-

sett Medical Center in Cooperstown on January 25, where they participated in the Up Close Cardiac Surgery program. This program is an educational program designed to inform students about heart disease, and how the development of heart-healthy habits may lead to a healthier life. In the three hour interactive session, the students learned about the car-diovascular system, the risk factors for heart disease, the dangers of smoking and vaping / juuling, and the benefits of regular exercise and a heart-healthy diet. During the three hours, they got to work in five different learning stations led by students from the Bassett New Visions program. They watched a videotaped open heart surgery where they got to view the heart and smokers’ and non-smokers’ lungs. They watched a video narrated by a Bassett Hospital heart sur-geon, who gave them a “tour” of the operating room during a heart surgery and introduced different people who worked in the operating room who described the jobs they did and the equipment they worked with. A heart-healthy lunch was provided by Bassett to all of our attendees. The students asked lots of great questions and displayed excellent behavior! The information learned during this field trip will be reinforced during the body systems units studied in the Health 7 Class.

New from 5th Grade Science Class! The 5th graders created terrariums after learning

about Earth’s four major systems; the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Like Earth, terrariums are closed systems that are formed by the four open systems. Students used aquarium gravel, activated charcoal powder, soil, moss, and recycled baby food jars to create their own terrariums to observe and bring home.
