Visiting Performance “Brilliant at Being Resilient”
Spring Fair 2018 WOW!! What truly wonderful time we had being together on a beautiful warm spring
evening, raising money for our garden!
This event on the SHPS calendar would not be successful if we did not have the help
and support of students, the SHPS families and the wider community and local
businesses. One of the core values at SH school is Teamwork and the teamwork shown
by so many people to make our fair so successful was outstanding.
A HUGE thankyou to all who were involved to make the Spring Fair such a happy and
memorable occasion. Thankyou to local businesses who made donations, thankyou to
families who cooked, baked, cleaned, prepared, filled bottles, donated time and so
much energy, thankyou to our inspirational students!
Funds raised will go towards our worm farms, garden retaining wall, much needed
gardening equipment and seedlings etc for next year.

Principal’s Column This Week’s Whale Awards and Class Academic Awards
Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
Another successful Spring Fair!
We just want to say a big, big thank you to everyone who came to
the Spring Fair and as importantly, to everyone who worked so hard
to make it such a great success. The sun shone, lots of people came
and everyone seemed to have a wonderful time.
A huge appreciation must go to Annie Balfour and Bettina Core for
their massive effort with this event. They have put months of time
and energy into planting, preparing and planning this great
community event.
Thanks to Debra Bodne-Schmidt, Tarrin and Senita Balfour who in
the school holidays sold raffle tickets around our town.
In addition, we would like to thank all the local businesses who
donated to the raffle and for their generous support over the years.
The Spring Fair is as much a community event for the school and
the local area, as it is to raise funds for our Kitchen Garden
Program. It is an opportunity for the children to have a fun evening
and for the parents to get a chance to socialise.
Overall the Spring Fair made a profit of $$3,406.48 on the night.
Congratulations to Mel Williams and the P&C and her team of
canteen helpers who were presented with an outstanding
achievement in the canteen around healthy choices on the menu.
It has been great listening to Pak Karl and Bu Bibi stories about
their trip to Indonesia. They took part in a study tour and created
new links with our new sister school. The energy and time they are
both putting into our bilingual program needs to be
acknowledged and celebrated. They are creating genuine
connections which will enhance our students knowledge,
understanding and partnerships. On behalf of us all here at the
school, we thank you both genuinely and sincerely.
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Camp Quality
We had a visit from Stan and Kailah from Camp Quality today
who introduced us to Kylie, Mel and Dean the puppets.
During the Camp Quality Puppet Show, Kylie and Dean led
our school through a journey of what it’s like for kids and
families to have cancer. This informative, entertaining puppet
show enthralled our school students while giving them the
information and facts about living through cancer and the
ongoing treatment kids and families go through. Thanks to
the Camp Quality Crew!
If your child would like to email Kylie (the puppet) to ask her
any questions, here is her email address:

Our New Sister School in Jakarta
SHPS is lucky enough to be involved in the BRIDGE Program from the Asia Education
Foundation, under Melbourne University. We have been partnered up with a school
in Jakarta, which caters for ages 5-18. We have been linked to the primary school
(sekolah dasar) sector at this school, which is fantastic as our students will be able
to connect with Indonesian students of the same age. This provides another
authentic purpose for language learning and our community will gain much insight
and understanding of our huge neighbour – Indonesia.
Bu Bibi and I were lucky enough to gain travel scholarships to Jakarta during the
school holidays in order to ratify the relationship between our schools. Our Sister
School exists in such a different context to SHPS. The school is called Mi Yasda and
it is an Islamic private school. Their student cohort reigns predominantly from lower
to middle class families and the location of their school is in the most expensive
suburb of Jakarta; Menteng. This area is home to many International Embassies,
including the Australian Embassy, which is Australia’s largest Embassy in the world.
This fact alone underlines the importance of understanding our often
misunderstood neighbour, Indonesia. Their poor, under resourced institution
appears in stark contrast to surrounding mansions and huge business district.
Bu Bibi and I joined 32 other participants from all over Australia in this event. We
were shown the main tourist attractions in Jakarta and really got to feel what it is
like living in a city of over 30 million people squashed into an area from Scotts Head
to Coffs Harbour! Jakarta is a mega city and it’s crazy to say the least. We were
greeted with such a warm welcome by the teachers and Principal at Mi Yasda. They
put on various performances for us showcasing their extra-curricular activities like
dance, music and Indonesian martial arts – Pencak Silat. They were exceptionally
happy that Bu Bibi and I could communicate with them all in Bahasa Indonesia and
they’re so keen to learn more English from us all!
Your children will be spending time in their Indonesian language learning to gain
communication skills to show our sister school students about life in school here at
SHPS and their lives in our beautiful valley with it’s pristine beaches, lush forests
and uncrowded places. We ask for your support at home when your child is putting
together information about their lives out of school, be it a photo of family members
or your home or anything else of interest. Our Indonesian counterparts are really
curious as to what our lives are like. Opportunities like this are of utmost importance
because both schools aim to distil stereotypes of other cultures and promote real
people to people relationships. In line with this is the importance of Australia being
able to produce graduates skilled in Indonesian language and culture as we move
into the future with the world’s fourth largest country at our side. We feel very lucky
to be able to guide your children in this pursuit.
Terima kasih banyak (thank you very much)
Karl Krause – Indonesian teacher
