Discover hand carved stone and painterly photography, jewellery for men and film about the internet, apple trees and tactile textiles, grain-stores and garden sheds – dig deep and you’ll find there really is something for all tastes.

The whole event - as always - is inspired by and focused around our wonderful professional artists and makers and their generosity in welcoming us into their spaces. Expect well kent faces as well as recent graduates and new names, ready to be discovered.

While studio hopping look out for our roving poet-in-residence encouraging you to look more deeply and talk more expressively about the art you see all around. Embrace all things epicurean with our friends at The Stove Network who you will meet across the region travelling sustainably,

and discovering and cooking the local food produce available on our doorstep.

We’ll be reaching out further in 2015 - as far as Berlin - with our inaugural international exhibition. And closer to home we will connect more deeply with Edinburgh through a national exhibition in our capital city.

Monday 25 May 9.30am start at the Barnsoul campsite (nr Shawhead). Ride would be up to Moniaive and Kirkland taking in about 6 studios and lunch at the Green Tea House in Moniaive.

SPRINGBACK

Our Springback Scheme provides the opportunities for artists who have a connection to Dumfries and Galloway to take part in Spring Fling; many grew up in the region, and some have lived or worked in Dumfries and Galloway in recent years.

NEIGHBOUR

Our Neighbours Scheme was introduced in 2013 to strengthen our links with artists and makers from our neighbouring regions and allows a limited number of them to take part in Spring Fling in venues across the border from where they live and work.

With continued support from The Holywood Trust and the Archie Sutter Watt Trust, our Young Artists Programme awards a bursary and a period of mentoring to three recent graduates with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway. Find out more about the programme on p10.

Running on EmptyArt, travel, localism, food, drink and rural sustainability come together in Running on Empty, a commission for Spring Fling 2015 by award-winning Dumfries arts collective The Stove Network.

Over the weekend a creatively adapted Black Cab will follow the Spring Fling routes and call at studios, transforming itself into a pop-up kitchen. Caterers Scrumptiouswill conjure a mixture of local fare, all closely related to particular locations and studios – a uniquely rural twist on the fashion for pop-up city street food.

Come and try out samples of seriously local produce and time your own studio tour to coincide with affordable meals, much-needed refuelling and great craic.

Spring Fling x Wigtown Book Festival ResidenciesSince 2009 this two-part residency has created a place for an artist to create new work during an intensive period engaging with Wigtown Book Festival. The work is then presented in an open studio setting in Wigtown for Spring Fling.

We have now turned this concept around and will have, for the first time in 2015, a writer in residence who will get to know Spring Fling’s artists, their work, studios, processes, and audiences, to create new work which will be presented at Wigtown Book Festival 2015.

Writer in Residence

Marjorie Lotfi Gill, our first writer in residence, is a poet based in Edinburgh and the Poet in Residence at Jupiter Artland. She co-founded and runs Open Book, a charity that organises shared reading groups for vulnerable adults, and takes those groups to linked events at the Edinburgh International Book Festival.

During her residency, Marjorie will be writing in a number of the studios and encouraging others to write alongside her, as well as providing other opportunities for Spring Fling visitors to respond to the artworks in writing, and publish the results.

Artist in Residence

Anupa Gardner is an Edinburgh based printmaker and illustrator. Originally from India Anupa is fascinated by people’s stories and their relationships with places, creating work which is a response to her surroundings.

Aunpa’s work Wee Wigtown was playful and interactive and saw her collect stories from locals and festival goers to create a multi-sensory 3-dimensional portrait of Wigtown.

Schools Poster Competition After its successful first year, we continued our poster competition this year. The official Spring Fling 2015 poster has been designed by a Dumfries and Galloway primary school pupil. The winning poster will be printed and distributed around the UK and along with the two runners up and school winners will be exhibited at Gracefield Arts Centre between 28 February – 4 April.

Exhibition Gracefield Arts Centre presents work from past winners of the Spring Fling Young Artist Bursary since the start of the programme in 2012. Alongside the exhibition will also be a mini showcase of the winning posters from Spring Fling’s 2015 Poster Competition (more information below).

2015 is an exciting year for Spring Fling as we evolve. Spring Fling is a special event to many and has grown sustainably yet substantially. Over the past few years we have been nurturing a year round programme of youth engagement, residencies, digital projects and festival co-production.

In order to involve a wider creative community in our growing programme, we will be launching a new organisation in 2015. This new organisation will have Spring Fling as its heart, and as its flagship event. For more information or to contribute ideas please visit www.spring-fling.co.uk/evolution.

Modern Heritage Craft creates the chance for young people to work with professional makers to learn a craft and create a contemporary functional object. Amanda Simmons (studio 35, p35) and Shona Guthrie (studio 49, p43) will work with two groups of young people and, through learning practically about the craft of jewellery and glass, they will create functional objects.

As a photographer I find myself drawn to the quiet and unassuming, the discarded and disregarded, and the quietness of overlooked places. My processes centre on transforming what my eye sees into what my heart feels; layering and blending images to give a painterly feel.

what to expect: A big friendly Irish welcome at The Grainstore, a Grade 2 listed building currently under restoration. Enjoy the preview with a glass of wine, and over the weekend coffee and stained-glass cookies, while browsing the exhibition. Plenty of craic and photographic fun in this unique setting.

Birds and landscape are my inspiration; printmaking is my preferred medium. My work is characterised by the wide variety of print media used including etching, collagraph, monotype, wood and lino cut. My ambition is always to capture the essence of my subjects through simplification.

I mostly produce wheel made pots illustrated with designs derived from natural forms. These occasionally include images based on the human figure implying a narrative open to various interpretations. The illustrations are created on the pots by using an expressive variation of tube lining.

what to expect: Visitors to my studio will be able to see work at various stages and also watch how the image is applied to a pot. There will also be a selection of sketch books, photographs and other sources of inspiration.

I use my work as a shepherdess as a focus to what I paint. Once I’ve checked the stock and done what has to be done on any given day, and weather and time permitting, head back out to the moors with my paints.

what to expect: I will have old and new work on display, alongside limited edition giclee prints and greetings cards. I’ll also set up the collaborative canvas again too.

I like contrast and simplicity in the natural world. I use infra-red B&W photography and long exposures. The work I am presenting has been inspired by Scottish nature, landscape and the lives of ordinary people who once lived and worked here.

what to expect: My exhibition will be held in Glaisnock Café in Wigtown. There will be a display of my B&W photographs of Scottish landscape and landscape detail. You can view them while enjoying fantastic home-made food or with a cup of tea.

I am excited by the rich textures and constantly changing colours that can be found in the landscape of the Machars. I specialise in collagraph printmaking. Each unique print is produced from a hand-made collaged plate, the highly textured surface results in an embossed print.

what to expect: Visitors can see my sketchpads and printing plates alongside my work. I will be demonstrating how a collagraph is printed on my converted mangle printing press. This year I will also demonstrate free-hand machine embroidery, a technique used to add texture to my printing plates.

Inspired by patterns and typography found within my environment and found objects, my work embraces the past, the thrown away and pre-loved, creating something fresh and contemporary. It seeks to challenge our perceptions of the past, rekindle our memories and instill a sense of nostalgia.

what to expect: Our gallery will exhibit my screenprints, objects of interest, developmental work, artists books and my new stationery range. Visitors will receive a guided tour of my studio and the screenprinting process and can pull their own screen, creating their own postcard to take away.

I work outdoors whenever possible, gathering information in the form of annotated thumbnail sketches and pastel studies. When the weather proves to be too problematic I revert to still life painting in which I employ the same approaches and techniques as in my landscapes.

I am a paper and book artist who likes to create one-off sculptural pieces from all types of paper and display them in a theatrical way. My work includes wearable paper fashion items and accessories as well as artists’ and altered books.

what to expect: In collaboration with Cally Gardens in Gatehouse of Fleet, my studio will be transformed into a garden filled with real and paper flowers of all shapes and sizes. Visitors can view finished work and work in progress or even make their own paper flowers.

I am an abstract painter who enjoys working on a large scale. I use a variety of different tools and mediums in my work, building up layers and shapes to create a textured three dimensional image.

what to expect: Visitors will have the opportunity to see and explore the beach that continues to be a great influence behind my work, whilst also being able to view works in progress, previous studies and new finished pieces.

I use watercolours and gouache to make series of abstract and landscape based paintings. The flow and energy of nature inform both areas of practice. The mood can vary from expressive and celebratory, to calm and reflective.

what to expect: Mono-prints, abstract paintings and collages and landscapes will be on show. Also sketchbooks and works in progress. Visitors are welcome to try their hand at mono-printing and collage at no charge.

My practice explores the poetics of change, decay, reaction and time. My sculptures often reference a function or action within the dialogues between each of their elements. They allude to familiar forms, responding to features of a particular space through scale, shape, material and surface.

what to expect: A new body of work that ranges in scale, from intimate hand-held objects to large architectural forms that respond to the gallery space, that activate and reflect upon the ephemeral nature of the sculpture.

My medium is oil on board. I paint flower pieces in a traditional manner after the Dutch Masters. I have also been in love with wildlife all my life and find endless inspiration painting the local birds and animals.

what to expect: Visitors will see a working studio with examples of my work in all stages of production. They will also be able to wander about in the walled garden just outside my studio where I grow many of the plants that I paint.

I work with kiln-formed bullseye glass, using techniques of fusing, slumping, draping and sandblasting the glass to create the bold outlines and contrasting colours that define my style. My designs throughout are influenced by my love of colour and flowers in their many forms.

what to expect: On display will be my new collection of larger-scale sculptural meadow flowers. Visitors will see an installation that invites people to respond to my work in the same way they might respond to nature itself. Work in progress and new designs will also be on display.

I make figurative sculpture using willow and other coppiced material which I grow and harvest annually. Working mostly to commission, the flowing figures are sometimes of large scale and for events or festivals. I also design and make carrying baskets and creels using traditional techniques.

what to expect: As you enter my workshop you will be aware of the lovely fragrance of willow. I will be demonstrating weaving techniques (when time and space allow) and answering questions. There will be new sculptures and baskets on show. Jennie Ashmore is joining me this year.

I am using the colours and textures of pressed leaves and flowers to create images which reflect my passion for pattern and nature. This season the colours have been wonderful in gardens and woods and I am hoping to reflect this in new work.

what to expect: This year I am sharing Trevor’s workshop for Spring Fling. I will have more wall space which I intend to decorate! I will demonstrate how Leafworks are made using my collection of dried material. Leafworks and cards will be for sale.

I use felting and machine embroidery to decorate cashmere scarves and wraps. Also, I design and make tweed jackets that are tailored and made to measure. There is a wide selection of tweeds from which we can find just the right colour for the client.

We are fortunate to be partners in life and business, sharing our passion for pottery born of red clay and fire. We use traditional techniques to make our wares, throwing and press moulding, decorating with slips, and firing in a wood fuelled kiln.

what to expect: In addition to displaying examples of my work, I will be running photography demonstrations throughout the weekend. Discover how changing the composition and lighting of a scene can dramatically affect the emotional impact of a photograph.

Inspired by the ever changing and ephemeral relationship of movement and light within nature, a series of sculptural forms has been created using laminated birch/paper and silver or copper and brass. All forms, although contained by mild steel, either allow or imply movement.

I am a willow weaver, making baskets and anything that I possibly can from willow. Living structures, figurative sculptures, forms influenced by nature, things that hang on the wall, rest on a table or stand on the floor. Twisty, bendy, wobbly, wonderful willow.

what to expect: I am pleased again to be hosted by The CatStrand and will be demonstrating willow weaving outside the Pyramid Gallery where there will be a display of work for sale. Also an opportunity to take part in willow ‘bombing’ the CatStrand railings in the lead up to Spring Fling.

I specialise in kiln formed glass, delicate structures made with coloured glass powders, created by mass, heat and time. My focus this year is on the physics of glass and to experiment in creating more abstract vessel forms using gravity.

I am an artist and printmaker and my work is centred on drawing. I work outside, recording the subtle changes in Galloway countryside across the seasons. Hedgerows, gardens, wider landscapes and trees all present their own opportunities.

what to expect: My work this year includes watercolour and pen and ink paintings, and a range of limited edition etchings (some hand-coloured). A display of my sketchbooks and a range of visual information on the various techniques and methods of work will be presented.

My recent work has focused on creating small groups of pots, all different but united with a balanced set of glazes. The use of matt and shiny surfaces and subtle colour changes through layering glazes has led me to explore decoration quietly evocative of landscapes.

I have recently completed a degree in production arts and design at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, majoring in prop making. Being a prop maker, I have a huge range of skills from sculpting and carving to costume making and woodwork.

what to expect: Visitors will be able to see the processes involved in prop making from initial concept to clay sculpt, the mould making and casting , painting, finishing and assembly. Completed works and pictorial records of commissioned works on stage and set.

The work is usually a combination of thrown and slab-built using the clay playfully, exploring its plastic limitations, always looking for new surfaces and textures and always respecting the material itself. It is only through interacting with a material that you truly understand it.

Film, site specific installation and sculpture are the three main areas in which my practice resides. Primarily working outwith the studio environment, I take inspiration from diverse natural landscapes, communities and historically rich places.

what to expect: Since 2010 I have worked mainly within the ‘Artist In Residence’ framework, spending significant amounts of time abroad. My Spring Fling studio will be an intriguing point of consolidation, bringing together elements from six international residencies.

I love being outdoors and look around the corner, sitting in quiet appreciation. Not just the grand view, the dramatic panorama, but the details that knit together to make the fabric of the land. I use my camera to try to reflect this appreciation.

what to expect: I try to take photographs ‘about’ a place rather than simply record what is there. You might look at my work and say “that must be the Highlands,” (for example) but not know exactly where. I like details and abstracts, but also more expansive views.

My painting consists of still life, landscapes and portraiture. I work mainly in oils as I enjoy the vibrancy and flexibility of the medium. My work often reflects a sense of longing and mortality.

what to expect: For this year’s Spring Fling I will be introducing a number of new works including a new portrait series, new hyper-real cityscapes and some new experimental surreal works. I will also have some small affordable ‘postcard’ paintings, sketch books, working drawings and studies.

My work is usually thrown in a white stoneware clay body and richly decorated with glaze, pigments and lustre. The motifs are developed from the observation of the natural environment and often represent the evolution of organic forms.

The addition of clay extrusions to my repertoire of techniques has resulted in an abundance of creative possibilities. A section formed from a die, cut with one idea in mind, takes on a life of its own when turned sideways and manipulated.

I work with photocopied images, using my own body, for drawings and transfer printing onto cloth. My interest is in the way we respond to cloth, the relationship between the body and cloth and the qualities of both; wrinkles, creases, scars and frayed edges.

The far North fires my imagination. My interests have been coastal and archaeological but since 2008 also reference the geological and glacial landscapes of Iceland. I work in layers of materials echoing rock strata, a sense of passing time and the creation of land itself.

what to expect: Working as both a painter and printmaker, the techniques of these two very different areas of creativity flow, change and influence each other. Visitors will see paintings of all sizes, handmade prints and artists books. Sketchbooks showing development of ideas will also be on show.

I have always enjoyed working with wood, the challenge of violin making is both technical and creative and also emotional. I hand select tonewoods at a sawmill in Mittenwald, Germany and create my own varnish with propolis from John Mellis, local beekeeper, which gives the violins a rich golden finish.

With large rotund forms and vibrant colours and glazes, my distinctive take makes for ceramics which exude style and personality. I continue to explore and experiment with glazes, colour and painting forms, and use various firing techniques including stoneware, Raku and smoke-firing.

what to expect: Works on display will include large vessels, functional ware and Raku pots. A Raku demonstration will take place in the beech wood garden on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. I will also provide an opportunity for visitors to glaze and fire a pot.

I am primarily a painter in watercolour. Since moving to the studio on the Drumlanrig Estate I have been drawing and painting the gardens and buildings. My colour palette is high, bright and discordant, the drawing and brushwork loose and intuitive.

I am a recent Jewellery & Silversmithing graduate from Edinburgh College of Art. My work is inspired by the Scottish countryside, mainly looking at organic shapes and natural growth in nature. I work with precious metals as well as found animal horn.

what to expect: A range of jewellery, made from both precious metals and found material. Alongside my jewellery collections I will be showing my research material, such as drawing and photography. I will also be showing various tools I use to create my work.

I work in a free and loose style, responding quite instinctively to what appears on the canvas. Using various tools I layer the paint on to the canvas scraping back to reveal the colours underneath. My work reflects the wild Scottish landscape.

I work as an illustrator. My lino cut prints often reflect my deeply rural lifestyle. Black and white or brightly coloured, there are illustrations and decorative designs from a lifetime of lino cut. Each February I run lino cut print making workshops in Thornhill.

what to expect: A selection of prints are for sale. A display of book covers and packaging shows examples of commissioned work. Visitors can roll ink onto a lino cut and make a print on the small cast iron press. Take it home with you, no charge.

Although I have spent most of my professional life as a potter, painting and surface pattern have always been important elements in my work. I make everything from hand thrown stoneware mugs, to one off sculptures and fine art, using a variety of media.

what to expect: Especially for Spring Fling, I will be creating a wide range of new work which will be exhibited in our gallery, demonstrating some of the techniques I use, and firing the raku kiln during the weekend for visitors to watch the process.

I am now developing work using oil paints, a varied medium which allows each painting to develop according to the character of the plant or the complexity of the composition. However I retain my interest in the design element and my fascination with negative space.

what to expect: Visitors will see that I take inspiration from my garden, which is crammed with plants and wildlife. In addition to paintings in oils and watercolour I will have cards, prints and some unfinished work on show, together with a small selection of sketch books.

I’m a painter. Changing light, weather and seasons are exciting and can completely change the way one sees a familiar place or object. Trying to recreate that experience in paint is a challenge and sometimes a frustration but it’s what I try to do.

what to expect: Visitors will see a working studio, a collection of new work, paintings in various stages, sketchbooks and tools of the trade . I’m happy to discuss and demonstrate my working methods. We have tea and home baking, visitors are welcome to picnic in the garden.

I am a printmaker. My prints are not reproductions of other media, but pursue qualities that only handmade prints can offer. I am intrigued by the possibilities of using contemporary technology along with traditional printmaking craft skills, creating original prints in genuinely limited editions.

In my work this year I have tried to capture the power of the elements. Portraying land, river and sea, my paintings are of no specific place but where the viewer perceives them.

Painting and drawing is the way I enjoy interpreting how I experience the world around me. Capturing a mood, an atmosphere, and creating contrasts can bring a piece to life. The challenge to keep the work fresh lies, for me, in the choices of materials.

My work attempts to explore the internet’s platform and our cultural relationship to it. By remixing imagery, virtually and physically, this sense of leaping freefall is questioned. I have recently graduated from UOC Fine Art and showed part of my degree show works in Athens.

The gallery is run by volunteer group members, so the visitor is usually welcomed by one of the artists or makers themselves. There is a programme of exhibitions, and occasional workshops and events.

Directions: Situated on Queen Street, in the centre of Dumfries, the gallery is a very short walk from the High Street. From the Fountain outside Boots, head along English Street, and turn right onto Queen Street at the Queensberry Hotel. The gallery is on the right hand side after the hotel.

G2 The Art Room within The Old School Within The Art Room you can find a whole host of treasures from unique and unusual gifts and crafts to collectible artwork by local, national and international artists. The Art Room Gallery flows throughout the whole of The Old School, with the stunning Victorian building being an enjoyable visit in itself. The Art Room Gallery’s Seasonal Exhibition Programme regularly welcomes eclectic collections to the Dumfries area, from solo exhibitions to group collaborations. The Art Room also offers ‘Art for All’ through its various creative workshops programmes; beginning from age 9 months! Joining The Art Room within The Old School are a number of other businesses, including the popular NonaLou’s Tearoom, which offers breakfasts, lunches & truly scrumptious cakes, teas and coffees - including a large range of gluten and dairy-free options.

Directions: First left after Dumfries cinema and left at Kevin Farish’s at the very bottom of Brooke Street to access the car park. Or from Queen Street opposite Lidl, turn right onto McLellan Street then right onto Brooke Street and again, it’s the large Victorian school building on the left.

G3 McGill Duncan Gallery Established in 1978, McGill Duncan Gallery is the oldest privately owned Art Gallery in Dumfries and Galloway. A small bright exterior leads to five attractive exhibiting rooms, each of a different size and character. Jill and Zoë Blamire run this family business and artist Leo Blamire’s Spring Fling studio is located here. Each exhibition is carefully curated and work is displayed with artistic flair and a meticulous eye for detail.

The gallery holds a special exhibition in August of Scottish and Galloway Paintings from the 19th Century onwards. Collectors can also buy paintings that have been sourced by Jill and Zoë throughout the year.

Their contemporary exhibition programme has a nationwide reputation. Current exhibitors include Helen Turner PPAI PAI, Alexander R Robb, Claire Harrigan RSW, Simon Laurie RSW RGI, Tracy Levine and Lisa Hooper. There is always an exciting collection of original prints and ceramics to add to your collection

Directions: Enter Castle Douglas from the A75 and drive down King Street, past the crossroads at the lower end of the street. The gallery is on the left hand side opposite Gardenpine Pet Store and the public toilets.

G4 Clience Studio A bright, welcoming gallery and studio in Castle Douglas’ main street shows original oil and water colour paintings by artist owner Angela Lawrence. Invigorating or tranquil seascapes and atmospheric Galloway landscapes are currently her principal subjects, but the Western Isles, Highlands and other locations as well as imaginary landscapes and more abstract work also feature. Her paintings have an immediacy and quality of light which give a great sense of being outdoors. Some work has featured the sea in close up, for which Angela won a Visual Arts award, and most recently “Reflections”, a more contemplative and abstract theme. Also available are a wide selection of archival quality signed giclée prints, mostly of Galloway, and affordable art gifts.

Angela, an elected member of the Glasgow Society of Women Artists, is commissioned and exhibits widely, including at PAI and RGI, annual exhibitions, VAS, Gracefield Art Centre and other venues.

Directions: Entering Castle Douglas from the A75, Clience Studio is under the tall Clock Tower, in the lower end of King St, (main shopping street) on the corner of the A713 to Ayr/Auchencairn crossroads.

G5 The Whitehouse Gallery The Whitehouse Gallery is a contemporary art & craft gallery based in the historic artist’s town of Kirkcudbright, South West Scotland. Opened in 2004, The Whitehouse Gallery has steadily gained a solid reputation as one of the most popular art galleries in the region, showcasing top quality fine art and applied art & craft from across the UK. ‘My Heart Sleeps by the Sea’ is an exhibition with a nautical theme, and will be open during the Spring Fling event.
