making a planned gift this year. The challenge ends Sept. 30.

“We know others feel this same way, and that is why we decided

to offer the challenge,” Suzie Reno said. “It is an open invitation to

everyone who sees the benefits of first-rate care close to home.”

Even though they are longtime area residents, the Renos have

never taken their community hospital for granted and have

always felt fortunate to have skilled doctors and innovative

programs available close by.

“Jack and Suzie have always been outstanding role models in

our community,” said Arlan Fuller, MD, Clinical Vice President

for Oncology Services Integration and Academic Affiliations,

who, along with Jonathan Adler, MD, was honored by the

Renos with an earlier gift to the Center for Cancer Care. “We are

grateful for their leadership and for the participation of everyone

UPDATE:

Mother Baby Unit Renovations UnderwayWomen who give birth at Winchester Hospital will soon find a refreshed and

updated unit, with improved lighting, floors, walls and other infrastructure.

These enhancements are part of a $2 million investment in a Maternal

and Child Health Initiative, which supports the hospital’s commitment to

providing the very best care for parents and their newborns close to home.

This includes award-winning lactation services for nursing mothers, a

program that promotes safe sleep for babies and efforts to earn the

Baby-Friendly Hospital designation from the World Health Organization

and UNICEF. The journey to become a Baby-Friendly Hospital was started

with a very generous gift from Charlene and Richard Williams in memory

of their daughter, Grace.

To learn how you can support this important initiative, please contact

Maribeth Canning, Vice President of the Winchester Hospital Foundation,

at 781.756.2156 or [email protected].

Cummings Foundation Grant Provides Critical Support

Joyce Cummings at a Women’s Leadership

Council event last fall at Wright-Locke Farm.

“Farm to Table: Eating for Your Health”

featured a panel of Winchester Hospital experts

discussing how dietary intervention can be used

as a complement to conventional medicine.

Guests enjoyed a delicious assortment of hors

d’oeuvres prepared by Vittorio Ettore, chef

and owner of Bistro 5 and A Tavola.

The refurbishment of the Mother Baby Unit is just one of the

projects Woburn-based Cummings Foundation is supporting

through a $500,000 multiyear pledge to Winchester Hospital.

The gift will also enrich cancer care services, nursing education,

and maternal and child health programs.

“Winchester Hospital has long been an invaluable part of the

community, providing top-notch care to local residents, including

many of Cummings Properties’ employees and clients,” said Cummings

Properties President and CEO Dennis Clarke. “We are so pleased to

support the hospital as it continues to evolve its exceptional care

to meet the expectations of the community it serves.”

Winchester Named a Community Value 100® Hospital

Winchester Hospital was recently

designated a Community Value Five Star®

facility by health care financial consulting

firm Cleverly & Associates. The hospital’s

score on the firm’s Community Value

Index (CVI) placed it within the top 20

percent of the study’s “Community Value

Hospital Earns Leapfrog Safety AccoladeOutpacing many other community hospitals in the area, Winchester Hospital

recently received an “A” on the Fall 2015 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score Report.

This well-regarded and sought-after recognition reflects the hospital’s overall

performance in keeping patients safe from preventable harm and medical errors.

Once again, loyal Winton Club members pulled

out all the stops in January, hosting their 96th

annual cabaret show and raising about $50,000

for Winchester Hospital. “Color the Night,”

chaired and produced by Rosemary McCormack,

was a golden success. The audience was

delighted by performances from talented

staff and community members. Spirited Winton

Club members did not disappoint with their

famous tambourine routine and synchronized

march. This year’s proceeds will be directed to

the Mother Baby Unit, A Caring Place boutique

and the NICHE program.

Soirée for Hope Advances Cancer CareHundreds of Winchester Hospital’s loyal supporters gathered

November 13 for the Soirée for Hope in the City of Light gala,

raising nearly $370,000 for advancements in cancer care. Held

at the newly renovated Boston Park Plaza Hotel, the event’s fun

foreign flair immersed attendees in French culture and cuisine.

“The funds raised by the soirée are crucial to ensuring our patients have access to state-of-the-art technology,

innovative treatments, integrative therapies and other cancer support services, all close to home,” said

Kelley Cornell, MD, Associate Medical Director of the Breast Care Center. “We are very appreciative of

the wonderful support we receive year after year from our sponsors, donors and staff.”

Engaging Patients One at a Time

WinACO Is a Top PerformerThe Winchester Community Accountable Care

Organization (WinACO) finished first nationally

with the highest percentage of savings over and

above the target set by the Centers for Medicare

and Medicaid Services (CMS). WinACO also had

the third-highest savings per patient in the

country, with the most savings per patient in

New England, according to CMS.

“These results are extremely encouraging

because it means we’re making sure our

patients stay well and out of the hospital,”

said Winchester Hospital CEO Dale Lodge.

“The WinACO is proof that we can provide

a better level of coordinated care that will

bring better value for the health care dollar.”

ACOs are groups of hospitals, doctors and other

health care providers who work together to

coordinate care and keep Medicare patients —

particularly those with chronic illnesses — healthy

while keeping costs down and quality high.

Winchester Garden Clubs Plant Hope

Daffodils, the symbolic flower of hope, will be poking through the

ground in the Center for Cancer Care’s healing garden this spring, thanks

to the generosity of the Winchester Garden Club and the Winchester

Home and Garden Club. Last fall, dozens of volunteers pulled on gloves

and dug in hundreds of bulbs, creating a visual statement of support for

patients and family members as they knelt side-by-side in the earth.

For gardener Marsha Lamson, the bulbs held extra significance. “I’ve

been inside the cancer center for treatment,” she said. “You can’t help

but look at this beautiful garden and feel more peaceful.”

The healing garden can be seen from the windows in the infusion area,

where patients and family members may spend considerable time.

Patients and caregivers may also reflect on the serene vista from one

of the garden’s benches or stroll along the paths to enjoy a close-up

of the sunny blossoms.

Winchester Hospital has received several prestigious recognitions that

reflect its commitment to providing high-quality care for older adults

as well as exceptional home care.

The hospital earned the Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem

Elders (NICHE) designation, the leading nurse-driven program

designed to help hospitals and other health care organizations

improve the care of older adults.

“Nearly half of our inpatients at Winchester Hospital are over age 65,”

said Marlene Williamson, Director of Inpatient Services. “These

patients — beloved parents and grandparents, valued community

role models — often come to us with very unique and specific

health care needs. We want to offer customized nursing practices

that are proven to best meet the needs of this population.”

The NICHE designation shows the exemplary geriatric-sensitive

care nursing staff provide with specialized attention to such

issues as falls, adverse medicine events, pressure ulcers and pain

management. This initiative was supported by the Winton Club,

which earmarked a financial gift both last year and this year to

support the NICHE program application and staff education.

The hospital’s home care agency, Winchester Home Care,

received an outstanding 4.5 out of five stars in a recent

report by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services,

placing it far above the state average of 3.5. The agency

was also named one of the nation’s “Top 500” on the

2015 HomeCare Elite™ list compiled by the National

Research Corporation and DecisionHealth®.

Caring for Our Community Today and TomorrowSince moving to Winchester in 1965, Jack and Suzie Reno have

been leaders in philanthropy and volunteerism, extending their

energy and generosity to Winchester Hospital and other causes

near and far. Jack has served on the hospital’s board and Suzie

was a founding committee member of Big Steps for Little People

and the newly established Women’s Leadership Council.

The Renos’ latest leadership gift to the community is the

Reno Family Legacy Challenge, in which the couple will give

Winchester Hospital up to $100,000 to honor any donor

making a planned gift this year.

“We are

grateful for their leadership and for the participation of everyone

joining their challenge.”

A Legacy of Care

The gift will also enrich cancer care services, nursing education,

and maternal and child health programs.

“Winchester Hospital has long been an invaluable part of the

community, providing top-notch care to local residents, including

many of Cummings Properties’ employees and clients,” said Cummings
