Summer is too hot with little rain. Winter is too cold with lots of snow. Fall is confused and can’t make up its mind on whether it should rain or snow so it chooses both. Spring, on the other hand, is a perfect mix of all the seasons. Spring is a time when the snow melts and the flowers grow anew. Spring is a time when cooped up kids stop bothering their parents and go outside to play. Spring is a time of long walks, beautiful tem-peratures, picnics and tranquility. Except for the occasional storm, spring is a time for nature to be in harmony. Everywhere we look plants are growing, baby squir-rels are carrying their first acorns and little birds are learning how to fly. A slight, cool breeze calms the senses. Spring is one of the few times you can take your shoes off and lie in the grass for hours without any worries. In the sum-mer you have to worry about dehydrating and burning to a crisp (I do anyway), and I dare you to take your shoes off and walk in the snow during the winter; it won’t be pretty. Going with friends or family to have a picnic on a grass hill, drinking tea and eating sandwiches is perfect for a spring day. If you’re lucky, you might even see the Easter bunny running by. Spring is a time to rejoice in our blessings and be thankful for what we have.

With the beginning of spring comes the return of animals playing outside, birds chirp-ing in the trees, and insects buzzing about. When these creatures are in a group, they are often given a name that refers to something that describes them. Though we are all familiar with a “herd” of cattle or a “school” of fish, you may not know some names associated with the ones listed below. Test your knowledge of collective nouns by matching those given on the left with the appropriate animals, birds, or insects listed on the right.

SPRING

Baseball As the 2013 baseball season opens, snow still cakes the ground. “We’re off to an unexpected start,” Coach Hurla explains. The boys are forced to make adjustments because of the recent snow storm, but they are optimistic despite Mother Nature’s efforts to thwart them. Ward’s history in baseball is legendary throughout Kansas City and the state of Kansas, so this year’s team has big expectations to fulfill. Coach Hurla thinks that these expectations have a positive effect on the boys. It increases the effort they put into practice and games and forces them to work harder to maintain Ward’s legendary reputation. Six seniors lead the 2013 team: Zach Kolenda, Jon Roblez, Andrew Ramirez, Juan Sanchez, Andrew Sch-neider, and Manny Talavera. Roblez and Ramirez have both signed to play college baseball at Kansas State University and Central Missouri State University, respec-tively. These seniors have the responsibil-ity of keeping the team’s morale up during the season before passing the “bat” to the next class. Coach Hurla is optimistic about these seniors’ positive effect on the team but feels it will be two to three weeks be-fore the real leaders emerge. Good luck to the baseball team.

The beginning of March means the beginning of spring sports. Our baseball, softball, track, golf, swimming, and girls’ soccer teams are preparing for their seasons. The Outburst staff interviewed the coaches and players to get their thoughts and goals on this year’s upcoming seasons, which have all been delayed by the unexpected winter storms.

The softball team is currently gearing up for its new season. With the massive snow storm hitting before the season started, they were not able to get on the field until this week. There are seventeen girls on the team this year; the majority of them are freshmen and sophomores. Juniors Maddie Kostelac and Audrey Kump talked about how they felt about the team. They said that they were excited for the new season but also wor-ried because the games start soon. Sophomore Caroline Lowe said, “Although it is a young team, we have some good girls. I’m excited to see the potential.” Support the girls at their first game on March 25th at Tonganoxie. Good luck on your season.

This year’s track team has several new coaches. Head Coach Ridley is also the sprint coach; Coach Smith is distance; and Coach Daniels coaches hurdles and jump-ing. Coach Lally, the throwing coach, is our only returning coach. All of the coaches are happy with the size of the team; it is roughly 40, up from last year. Coach Lally says she is “Very, very excited with the potential they [the throw-ers] have from last year and can’t wait to see what they will achieve this year!” Coach Smith also added some encour-agement: “We have awesome kids, and we’re going to have an awesome season!” This year, four seniors, Ricardo Rosas, Andrew Kump, Andrea Oropeza, and Theresa Collins lead the team. They all have high hopes for their last season of high school track. Coach Ridley and Coach Smith are most excited about the Mill Valley meet, which is the Kaw Valley League meet and will show the team’s progress. Coach Ridley likes the team atmosphere, and everyone is looking forward to the meets. Good luck to the track team.

It’s that time of year when Ward and Piper come together to be teammates instead of rivals. The Wa-Pi (Ward-Piper) swim team is looking to have another good season. Coached by Amy Bartlow and Sandy Dailey, the girls have been working hard in the pool to achieve their goals. The two senior captains this year are Kate Dorian and Elizabeth Connor. Kate is hoping to get her career best times, win the WYCO meet for the fourth straight time, and return to state. Kate hopes that the team will continue to grow, and Elizabeth looks to get her times down and try new events. She is most excited to meet all of the Piper girls and to not be a “tad-pole” (newcomer) anymore! The Wa-Pi girls are looking to swim their way into a WYCO Championship and to a successful season. Be sure to come out and support these pretty fishies. Good luck, ladies.

Though hampered by late winter snow storms, Bishop Ward’s golf team boasts four new teammates as well as veteran golfers. Practice has been moved inside which limits the amount of actual playing time. “We can only do so much inside; outside is where the fun begins,” senior Danielle Lowe explains. Head Coach Tomasic commends the experienced upper-classmen who have set good examples for the new and younger members of the team. He admits that the team’s schedule will be challenging but hopes that he and Coach Kelly will instill a love of the game, which is a lifetime sport. Assistant Coach Kelly expects improvement and intel-ligent play from all golfers. He looks to Danielle and other experienced players to lead the team. Veteran players include senior Danielle Lowe and juniors Andrew Huey, Jimmy Bartolac, and Connor Burns. The first tournament is the Sunflower Invitational, which is slated for Saturday, March 23. Good luck golfers.

As soccer season finally rolls around, the girls’ soccer team is kickin’ it into gear. Coaching the team for his second season is Coach Nesselhuf along with three-year returning assistant and JV coach Conejo. There are eight seniors this year: Stephanie Cadena, Cristal Ugarte, Julia Vega, Clarissa Fierro, Martina Gonzalez, Annel Perez, Lilli Savadra, and Kylie Jones. As a team, the Lady Cyclones are hoping to win more games. According to co-captain Kylie Jones, the toughest competition will be Mill Valley, but she expects the team to beat Wyandotte, Harmon, Christo Rey, Washington, Sumner and Schlagle. Coach Nesselhuf says he is happy that experienced players are returning, and he is looking forward to learning about the new players. He says the snow has put everyone in a bind, but his overall goal is to take baby steps toward excellence. He hopes that they can beat any and all teams, and he guarantees the girls will be in good shape. Cristal Ugarte is a three-year returning soccer player. She’s looking forward to starting off the season and getting to play again. She hopes that everyone can play as a team and that she can take great memories away from this season. Stephanie Cadena has also played soccer for three years. She looks forward to seeing the Cyclones cheering the team on at home games, and her goal is to have better teamwork on the field. Since this is her last year, she hopes to take the State title. Julia Vega is a fourth-year returner. She looks forward to serving as co-captain and winning as many games as possible. Her goals are to grow closer as a team and to get recognized by colleges. Clarissa Fierro has also played soccer all four years of high school. She hopes to have a successful season and is excited to get to know the new players and to make new friends. We encourage everyone to come out and support the team. Go Lady Cyclones.

Look out Europe; Bishop Ward is coming to Italy this spring break! On March 19, seven students, two teachers, and a few parents will be traveling from Kansas City International Airport overseas to the Ital-ian Republic. Italy is over 5,500 miles from Bishop Ward, which is equivalent to driving for over three days straight at 70 miles per hour. Italy is known for its architecture, food and re-ligion. Throughout Italy, the most dominant features on the buildings are arches and domes. Some of the finest works can be seen all throughout the country, such as the Colosseum, the Milan Cathedral, and the Florence Cathedral. The Italian cuisine is widely influenced not only by its neighboring countries but also modern American discoveries. Many meals are based on simplicity, some having only four to eight ingredi-ents. Cheese, ham, wine and coffee remain popular components to these effortless dishes. A lot of the meals were created by the matriarch of the family and passed down which makes them feasible to use in the everyday home. Recently all eyes have been on Italy because of the retirement of Pope Benedict XVI. Pope Bene-dict XVI was the first Pope in over 600 years to retire

without passing away from natural causes. All of the popes from 1523 to 1978 were from what is now Italy, and it is the homeland of most of the cardinals in the world. The beautiful churches contain paintings and sculptures by some of the world’s most famous artists. The most famous religious painting is “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci, which is the most reproduced portrait of all time. Michelangelo is also a notable artist. He painted the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which took four years to complete. His vision originally focused on the Twelve Apos-tles, but it took a different route and evolved into the downfall of man and the promise of salvation through the prophets and genealogy of Christ. Some of the students attending the trip are Mark Lopez, Elizabeth Connor and Ashley Struzzo. Elizabeth is “most exited to see the Trevi Fountain and eat pasta for two weeks” while Ashley is “ex-cited to see the Roman nightlife and buy a pair of Bordello shoes.” Mark is “nervous about getting lost, but is most excited to see the Colosseum and buy a rosary from the Vatican.” Bishop Ward sends its prayers of safe travel to these pilgrims as they make their journey to Italy.

Ireland’s lush green hills, breathtaking coast-lines, rich religious history and legendary hospitality are all definitely things to look forward to for Ms. Lane, Peter Adams, and the six Ward students who will be visiting there this spring break. Lizzy Breitenstein, Hugh Breitenstein, Lourdes Madrigal, Stephanie Valle, Madison Lally, and Meg Calvert, along with the rest of the Breiten-stein clan and some of Ms. Lane’s friends and rela-tives, will be spending ten days in Ireland. They will be traveling around both Northern Ireland, which is still under the political governing of England, and the Republic of Ireland, which is under its own control. While on their trip, they will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, which is considered a holy day of obligation in Ireland and very much a solemn day of reflection, not the stereotypical day of drunken-ness and debauchery, which came about thanks to us Americans. The travelers are looking forward to a memo-rable Irish adventure.

Last weekend Ward students entertained record crowds with their performances of Disney’s “High School Musical.” With interesting set designs and lively choreog-raphy, students danced and sang the story of two high school students from fictitious East High School. From rival cliques, basketball star Troy (Luke Conchola) and transfer student Gabriella (Hannah Baughman) inadver-tently divide the school when they try out for the school musical. Other lead roles included sassy Drama Club President, Sharpay ( Brenna Roderick) and her brother Ryan (Giovanni Pilato); Troy’s best friend Chad (Richard Cassidy); scholastic decathlon captain Taylor (Anna Powell); drama teacher, Ms. Darbus (Lizzy Breitenstein); and basketball Coach Bolton (Julio Caro). The crew and cast worked hard under the direction of Ms. Lipovitz to provide an im-pressive production for students, families, and friends of Bishop Ward.

1In Mississippi on March 3rd, 2013, it was reported that a baby born with HIV was “cured.” Diagnosed with HIV too late in her pregnancy to receive the anti-retriviral drugs, she began to get agressive treatments about thirty hours after the baby’s birth. She con-tinued the treatments for eighteen months, and when she returned to the doctors several months later, the baby had no traces for HIV.

2The president of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, held a lavish party on March 3rd, celebrating his 89th birthday. The party reportedly cost $600,000. During his party he gave an hour-long speech full of anti-Western rhetoric and criticized his political opponents. This cel-ebration was held in the midst of allegations that Mugabe is responsible for an increase of violence before the presidential elections that will be held later this year.

As part of her campaign, she promised to demand that North Korea “abandon its nuclear ambitions without delay.” Park claims that she “will not tolerate any action that threatens the lives of our people and the security of our nation.” As part of the inauguration ceremony, singer Psy performed his hit “Gangnam Style.”

4 March 12 marked the begin-ning of the conclave of Cardinals who will choose the successor to Pope Benedict XVI. A handful of names is cir-culating as our next pope. Among these are Cardinal Angelo Scolar of Milan, Brazilian Cardinal Odilo Scherer, and Americans Cardinals Timothy Dolan of New York and Sean O’Malley of Boston. The first puffs of smoke were expected to emerge from the Sistine Chapel around 6:30 p.m. on the 12th. Black smoke from the burned ballots means there is no pope. White smoke will mean that the 266th pope of the Catholic Church has been chosen.
