(I first gave a brief overview of Chagall (below) and showed the kids some paintings that I had printed out. I chose to go with a flower theme since I felt that some of Chagall’s paintings are a bit too abstract for kids

this age.)

March Chagall*Marc Chagall was born in Russia in 1887 – 124 years ago

*His real name was Moshe Segal – he changed it when he moved to France

*The oldest of nine children

*His father worked in a herring factory and his mother sold spices and herring out of a small shop in their home.

*His family didn’t like his art at first but he really loved it so much that he kept trying to convince them.

*As a child he studied drawing and painting and in 1910 he went to Paris and became an artist.

*Chagall often painted dreamlike scenes and many of the pictures he painted include memories from his childhood.

* He married Bella Rosenfeld who inspired his paintings and they had one daughter

*He painted with very bright colors and usually with oil paints. He often painted about his childhood home and things that he loved.

*He often painted other things within his paintings… in and around the main subject...like people, houses, animals etc…

*His paintings are fun to look at...See how many different things you can find in each painting and what are they?

* He painted well into his 90’s

*In addition to paintings, Marc created stage sets, stained glass, murals and costumes, as well as illustrations for children's' books.

(I showed them these flower paintings from Chagall and we searched for hidden things in and around the bouquet of flowers and admired the bright dreamy colors)

After finishing the book I told them that we would be making a bouquet of our own for our teachers.

I had the flowers printed below and handed one out to each child. On a large piece of paper I drew a vase and asked them to color their flowers with bright colors.

Once they had finished they game me the flowers and I very roughly cut them out and we then glued them onto the white paper with the vase to make a beautiful bouquet.

While I cut the flowers out to get them ready for gluing I also handed out a piece of paper that I had printed a frame on (below). I asked them to make a bouquet for their parents.

They truly loved it!!!

I then served snacks and juice.
