When Mary and Jerry Schutz purchased their Pickerel Lake property in 1981, it barely resembled the cozy cottage sur-rounded by lush greenery sitting there today. “It was a mess. No one had lived here for at least four years,” Mary said, adding that they had to have the grounds plowed due to their terrible condition. That same year, the couple moved from Fargo to Billings, Mon-tana, so after initial work on the new lake house, they spent only a couple weeks there each summer, leaving little time to genuinely devote to yard work. “We’d come back and it would be full of weeds,” Mary said. But after moving to the property permanently in 1997, “we got

serious about gardening,” she added. Her husband, a gar-dener since youth, had gar-dened everywhere the two called home over the years, making it a natural choice to do the same at their latest residence. But it was Mary, who didn’t begin gardening until her 40s, who drew up the plans. “I had a dream of what I wanted out there,” she said. “She laid the whole thing out,” Jerry contin-ued, adding, “I thought she was nuts.” “I’m the dreamer and he’s the worker,” she laughed in response. Looking at their garden now, a vast arrangement of festive flora with wooden paths weaving through and interspersed by artful touches, rock outlines and a miniature waterfall tinkling toward a tiny pool, it’s easy to imagine the blueprints were slightly overwhelm-ing.

But Jerry, who had an architecture firm, and Mary, a former interior designer with experience under a florist, successfully turned their garden into the sort neighbors gaze at in wistful envy. “If you know anything about gardening, you know it con-stantly changes,” Mary said. Some staples in the Schutz garden include hostas, peonies, bleeding hearts, day and Asiatic lilies, tulips, daffodils, daises and lots of irises, although their fellow flowers vary. Although it’s “primarily a flower garden” according to Jer-ry, vegetables, herbs, grasses and trees add to its unique consis-tency. “Jerry laid all the rock – hauled it, picked it, placed it,” Mary said, adding that he built the trellis that stands as one of several entrance points. With 6-8 hours of upkeep a week in Mary’s Garden, coined for its replication of her vision, the couple has put plenty of time and effort into creating their floral oasis. However, that’s not to say that they haven’t experienced their share of unpleasant predicaments throughout the pro-cess. “Deer are a problem here,” Mary said, referencing the fence they apply a

barnyard scent to after each rain to keep the creatures from nibbling their handiwork. “Some plants need to be sprayed down almost constantly,” Jerry added, pointing out flower varieties that have only been in the garden a year due to previ-ous deer decimation. The garden was also flooded about five years ago when the neighborhood’s culverts were blocked, gushing three feet of water onto the lawn.

“We’re very high above the lake, but all the property around us is higher,” Mary said. “The boardwalks (in the garden) were all floating. It was a mess.” Luckily, the effect on the plants wasn’t significant, and after pumping the water out, everything settled safely. “Most plants don’t like standing water,” Jerry said. “Some of (the garden) was designed to keep the water out.” And then there’s the gardener’s continual battle: weeds. “It’s hard to walk through the garden and not pull a weed. They grow as well as the flowers do,” Mary said. As far as advice for other would-be-gardeners, “Get your wife out to help every once in a while,” Jerry advised with a chuckle. The couple suggests sharing and trading plants, something they do often with their son in Colorado. “We have some irises that he gave us years ago,” Mary said, adding that though some plants won’t take due to climate difference, “irises work well back and forth.” Contrary to popular sentiment, Jerry recommends that you “be rough with your garden,” taking charge of plants, separating them – especially self-spreading perennials – and sharing extras with others. Its days as a plowing nightmare long passed, their labor has allowed the Schutzs to reap much enjoyment from Mary’s Garden, making it a literal dream come true.

Most parents instruct children to eat their vegetables; Don Steinmetz’s dad taught him how to make them grow. “My dad had a big garden when I was a kid,” Steinmetz said, noting that he enjoyed helping. But until moving to his current home on North Shore Drive about eight years ago, he hadn’t had a garden of his own. “That was just a patch of dirt when we moved in,” he said, gestur-ing to an impressive array of leafy greens, “so I got started.” To supplement the education from his dad, Steinmetz studied gar-dening by the book. “I read a lot of gardening books. This is the best one I’ve found,” he said, flipping through Edward Smith’s “The Vegetable Gardener’s

Bible,” which outlines growing techniques veggie by veggie. Steinmetz has done his research, evidenced by the vegetable varieties found in his garden; beans, peas, cu-cumbers, beets, onions, potatoes, zucchini and corn are interspersed by berry bushes. There are also apple trees out back. “There’s always something to pick,” he said, add-ing that he and his wife Pam have plenty to last them through each summer, with leftovers to can, freeze and give away to friends, coworkers, kids and neighbors. “I’d just as soon give it away,” he said, adding that selling his vegetables isn’t appealing. “Then it’s just a job and you don’t enjoy it.” From his many veggies, Steinmetz gifts mostly to-matoes. “Of everything I grow, tomatoes are the one thing I don’t like,” he said. Last summer he picked over 150 tomatoes; he and Pam ate perhaps two. So why does Steinmetz, who has green, pink and orange varieties, bother to grow them? “I read once that if someone grows something, it’s usually a tomato in a pot,” he said, adding, “Tomatoes are very easy to give away.” For Steinmetz, the best part of gardening is enjoy-ing what he’s grown, both in eating fresh vegetables and simply sitting in the garden and gazing at it. “I can sit in a chair, do nothing and just look at it,” he said, adding

with a chuckle, “A lot of times my wife will look out the window and think I’ve had a heart attack because I haven’t moved for an hour.” Pam is also a gardener, focusing her time and skill on vibrant flowerbeds. The couple enjoys planting seeds and picking weeds together in neigh-boring sections of the yard. Steinmetz guesses that he spends 30 hours a week in the garden, although “half of it might be sitting there and watching,” he said with a smile. “If you’re going to garden and put some effort into it, that’s all you get done in the summer,” he added, mentioning that he doesn’t fish as much as he used to. Steinmetz’s dedication has paid off in his success-ful crop, hardwon with troubleshooting along the way. “The biggest problem in a garden is that things get too crowded,” he said, adding that the more plants, the more moisture, the more rotted vegeta-bles. “I’ve learned that planting things too thin is bet-ter than planting things too thick, and planting rows too far apart is better than planting rows too close together,” he advised. Steinmetz also noted the significance of a plant’s

simplest pleasure: sunlight. “Very few vegetables grow good in the shade,” he said. “Shade is a killer.” He mentioned that 2-3 extra hours of sunlight each day is a huge help to vegetables, making loca-tion key. In plans for the future, Steinmetz hopes to fur-ther incorporate the greenhouse he began using three years ago to start strains. “When I retire I would hope to enlarge it and grow a few things in it, just to extend the growing season,” he said. His other ambition is a little trickier. “My goal: oranges,” he said, pointing out a pot-ted plant with tiny green globes hanging from its branches. Since bringing two orange plants home from Florida, Steinmetz has balanced them between being inside and outside, trying to maintain humid-ity. Even for the nonnative plant, Steinmetz has high hopes – and the gardening expertise to back them up. But it’s not his green thumb that gives him away; it’s his dirt-adorned knees. “That’s the difference between a guy who talks about gardening and a gardener,” he said. Judging by his muddied knees, it’s crystal clear Steinmetz is a gardener through and through.

Five easy ways to adda touch ofspring

A breath of fresh air, spring brings with it a change of pace and a brightness to the day

The arrival of spring has long been cel-ebrated by people of every faith and from every corner of the globe as a time to say farewell to the cold and gray of winter and to welcome the return of warmth and color and the beginnings of new life.

While spring is breathing new life into the out-doors, it’s also a perfect time to add a little sea-sonal oomph to your indoor environment. Here is an assortment of tips for brightening your home in celebration of spring.

* Change is in the air. Spring is a perfect time to bring the outdoors in. Spring flowers, arranged either in one large bunch or in several mini-bouquets placed in nooks throughout the house are not only a visual treat, but emit refreshing springtime scents.

* Brighten up. Adding seasonal touches to your home can be as easy as painting a piece of furniture, a single wall or the trim in the sun-niest room in your home. The best colors for spring are light, clean, refreshing, and natural as opposed to either pale pastels or deep, color-drenched hues. Consider paint colors inspired by nature, such as shamrock, violet, slate and goldenrod.

* Lighten up. It’s hard to imag-ine that spring has sprung in a room decked out in velvet or oth-er heavy fabrics. Warm days and spring breezes call out for sheer or lightweight curtains, slipcov-ers in natural solid-colored or flo-ral fabrics, and decorative pillows that bring splashes of color into the room. It’s not necessary to re-place all of the fabrics in a room to usher in a new season. Sometimes simply changing out pillows and removing warm winter throws is enough.

* Floor it. Don’t forget to give your floors a spring facelift as well. Substitute lighter cotton, si-sal, jute or seagrass rugs in natu-ral shades for the heavy wool rugs

that feel so right when the weath-er turns cold. (Spring and summer are also perfect times to have wool rugs cleaned and/or repaired.)

* Re-view. Shifting the arrange-ment of the furniture and decora-tive pieces in a room can have a major impact on its look and feel. During the cold winter months, it may be comforting to be nestled in a chair that faces a fireplace. But once the weather warms up and the flowers begin to bloom, the best view in the house might well be out the window. Invite spring into your home with a furniture arrangement that is oriented to-ward a window or other source of natural light. Then sit down and enjoy the view.

TOP:Let in the light and enjoy a breath of fresh air.

ABOVE:Brighten up any room with a new pastel paint.

ANNUALS

Looking for first signs of color? Look no fur-ther than these wonderful annuals.

* Alyssum: Starting in April, this cascading bounty of tiny flowers offers a sweet aroma that attracts butterflies.

* Dianthus: These vivid flowers also attract butterflies and are often a cottage garden staple.

* Gypsophila: Also known as baby’s breath, these delicate flowers can serve as filler in any landscape. Pink and white varieties are available.

* Impatiens: One of the best-known plants for the garden, these annuals come in scores of colors and can generally tolerate full sun to full shade.

* Larkspur: Belonging to the buttercup fam-ily, these flowers bloom in shades of white to violet.

* Pansy: These flowers are some of the ear-liest spring bloomers, arriving alongside spring bulbs like tulips.

* Petunias: Petunias put on a show of color through the entire season, making them a popular bedding flower.

PERENNIALS

These plants will come back year after year and offer spring shows.

* Cherry blossom: The flowers that sprout on cherry trees are some of the first signs of spring. Their pink or white buds are often a spectacle, so much so that towns and cities hold cherry blossom festivals.

* Jacob’s ladder: Variegated foliage that is dappled with violet-colored flowers can add a sweet smell and visual interest to the garden.
