SEPTEMBER in the gardenThe 1st of September is official spring day, which heralds the arrival of a whole new growing

cycle. A time when so many plants in the garden burst forth into full bloom, transforming the landscape into a veritable picture of floral beauty. This is the month for admiring gardens, hence so many open gardens and flower shows in the next while.

THREE PLANTS TO LOOK FOR THIS MONTH:

Highlighting all the new plants and gardening trends for this spring growing season. Entrance fee R20-00 donated to Msunduzi Hospice.

SEPTEMBER GARDEN CLUB TALK – “SPRING - HOORAH!” Tues 8th September >> 9:00am for 9:30am

CliviasOur very own indigenous bush lilies always add their special allure to the shaded parts of so many gardens. Today, they are being hybridised furiously in order to expand the genetic complexity and in

so doing, offer gardeners a whole new world of different colours, flower shapes and sizes, as well as flowering times. Check out what’s new for this spring season.

AzaleasAzaleas or Rhododendron indicum hybrids were undoubtedly the floral emblem of Pietermaritzburg in years gone by. They are still important flowering shrubs in local gardens, especially in those parts

with acidic soils, high rainfall and misty weather. Many named hybrids, including new introductions, along with nostalgic favourites will be available.

AlstroemeriasAlstroemerias, affectionately called Inca lilies, originate from South America. Today, numerous garden hybrids abound, gracing gardens and floral arrangements around the globe. This spring season

a whole selection of dwarf and intermediate hybrids in a vast array of pastel and brighter shades will be in store. Extremely rewarding perennials.

SEPTEMBER GARDEN CLUB TALK – “SPRING - HOORAH!” Tues 8th September >> 9:00am for 9:30am

OCTOBER in the gardenThe heart of spring often sees the first signs of plants coming to the end of their season. It’s

time to start replacing spent flowering annuals and planting out new vegetable and herb gardens. Many plants need to be pruned back immediately after flowering. Start spraying rose bushes on a regular basis to prevent fungal infections as soon as the spring rains commence.

THREE PLANTS TO LOOK FOR THIS MONTH:

RosesRoses remain the most commonly recognised and most loved garden flower of all time. October is the month of roses all around the country. It’s the best time to come in and see what new and exciting

roses are on offer. ‘Iceberg’ remains the all time best performer in local gardens, followed closely by the relatively new floribunda rose called ‘Knock Out’.

Clematis montanaClematis montana is a vigorous growing, deciduous climber from the Himalayas. Masses of white flowers adorn the tangle of thin vine-like stems in October, creating a breathtaking spectacle on fences,

over archways or, in classic English garden-style, growing up an apple tree. Limited stocks available this season, so hurry or book your order.

Citrus treesA good time to plant citrus trees is now, when the rains come. Freshly harvested fruit from your own garden is always a pleasure and joy. Citrus thrive in the greater KZN Midlands area, especially lemon trees. Every garden, no matter how large or small,

needs at least one lemon tree to provide for the household’s needs. A wide selection of budded citrus trees are on offer right now.

NOVEMBER in the Garden

NOVEMBER GARDEN CLUB TALK – GARDENING IN CONTAINERS & SMALL SPACES Tues 10th November >> 9:00am for 9:30amHints and tips on how to get the most out of limited space in suburban gardens. Bring along any garden queries, including pests and diseases. Lucky draw prizes. Entrance fee R20-00 donated to Msunduzi Hospice.

Blackwood’s Home of Gardening | 97 Chatterton Road, PMB Tel: 033-342 2191 | Trading hours: Mon-Fri: 8:00am-5:00pm Sat, Sun & Public Holidays: 8:00am-4:00pm www.blackwoods.co.za | /Blackwoods.HoG

November is usually a very wet month in most summer rainfall areas. It’s also a time when temperatures rise significantly on sunny days. Weed growth tends to accelerate and begin

overtaking lawns and garden plants. Focus on planting out new summer and autumn flowers and vegetables. Start grooming the garden for the forthcoming festive season, it’s nigh upon us.

THREE PLANTS TO LOOK FOR THIS MONTH:

New Guinea ImpatiensNew Guinea Impatiens continues to impress with the impactful colour that they add to the summer and autumn garden. Attractive leaves and large, brightly coloured flowers perform with distinction

in semi-shaded areas, although in certain areas, these plants can grow in relatively sunny positions, provided they get sufficient water. Great plants for pots and containers.

HydrangeasHydrangeas, or Christmas roses, fill the late spring and early summer gardens with an abundance of large mop head blooms. Best in well drained, loamy soil and a dappled shaded position, these are fast becoming amongst the most sought after flowering

shrubs in local gardens. They’re important subjects for established landscapes with large shady trees. Select now, whilst plants are in full bloom.

AgapanthusAgapanthus have become some of the most extensively planted indigenous perennials in local gardens. New hybrids in recent years have added significantly to their appeal, extending the range

with a whole different range of colours shapes and sizes. Select from dwarf forms to giant forms, with a whole lot of variegated leaf agapanthus also making their mark at the moment.
