NEWSLETTER

SPRING 2011

LETTER FROM EDITOR, Mandy Oxlade

Dear Friends

I hope you are all keeping well and the winter has not been too

unkind to you all. So what have we all been up to? The club’s sports

section finished on a real high when three of our member where

recognised at the South Bucks Sports Awards which took place on

29th

November.

Plans are well under way for the club’s 50

th party which is to be held on

Saturday 16th April in the main hall at Stoke Mandeville Community

Centre. Plans are also underway for this year’s Annual Sports Day which

will take place on Saturday 18th June.

With the ever changing world that we live in and the fact that the club is

now publishing the newsletters on line please can I ask where possible that

any articles be sent via email. I would also like to advise that any articles

that reach me after the closing date may be rolled forward onto the next

edition. Please remember that this is your newsletter so if you have

anything that you would like to be included, please let us know. We aim to

include a mixture of different material however we need your help.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE CLOSING DATE FOR THE NEXT

EDITION WILL BE THURDAY 5TH

MAY.

Christmas Card Donations Many thanks to everyone who donated money in lieu of Christmas cards. A

donation of over £80 was given to the club.

This seemed to be a popular idea and hopefully next year it can be

organised earlier in the year so more people get to know about it. Sorry to

the members who did not know about it. I was only going to do it myself

but once the idea was heard of, other people wanted to join in. As I had

only typed the article a week before the newsletter deadline it was a bit late

to add any more names. Diane White

Good News

Sue Golding became a grandmother in January

to a lovely little boy, Dexter.

Jeanne Wares, second great grandchild, Riley

was born on January 9th.

Congratulations to both families

A Pleasant Surprise

2010 has been a busy year again for me. I get great pleasure helping at the

club and attending our monthly socials and sports games throughout the

region and also organising our own games which is held in June. I would

like the time to help out at swimming but unfortunately on most

Wednesday nights I am playing table tennis in the local Aylesbury league.

In October Chris Brown and I put together nominations (for our club) for

sporting achievements for 2009-10 to the Aylesbury Vale South Sports

Council. My wife Diane also nominated myself for the “Outstanding

Contribution to Sport – in a non-playing capacity” (She saw the forms in

the local Bucks Herald).

What a surprise it was for Chris Brown to receive a letter back stating that I

had actually won the award just mentioned and on top of this Mandy

Oxlade won the award for Adult Female and Michael Everest won the

Adult Male Award.

We were invited to receive our trophies at the Annual Award Ceremony

held at Aylesbury Rugby Club on the evening of Monday 29th November

2010. They were presented by the Chairman of the Bucks & Milton Keynes

Sports Board who was the guest speaker for the evening. There was also a

small buffet afterwards.

This was indeed a pleasant surprise to end the year on.

Please see the photo below of the three of us with our trophies.

Steve Everest.

The only bright sunny day in January!

On Sunday 9th January, my younger daughter got married.

The week leading up to the big day had miserable weather

each day and it was cold! Very cold! The idea of the bride

and bridesmaids in low cut dresses gave me goose bumps

and I wasn’t even going to be affected! I chose a dress

and jacket in very pale pink with matching shoes, gloves and

handbag and I even bought a new toning coat in case the

weather demanded I wear one. (I had to look reasonably

smart as I was giving Caroline away, in church.) The day

dawned with beautiful blue skies; chilly yes,

but dry and crisp. For January, it couldn’t

have been more perfect.

My elder daughter

Laura was of

course one of the

many bridesmaids

and it was a treat for me to see

her in a dress as she lives in

trousers the whole time.

The day went off perfectly, about 130 of us at the church

and sitting down for the wedding breakfast, with a further

100 guests joining us for

the evening.

I may be biased, but

Caroline looked beautiful as

did the bridesmaids. The

food was a sumptuous delight and the setting

was magical. Lin Smith.

AGM News from the secretary

To those of you who could not make it to the AGM, the

main news is that your new committee remains very

similar to last year. Roy Carter remains our Chairman,

Mike King, our Vice-Chairman, Steve Everest our

treasurer, and I am continuing as Secretary. Michael

Everest, Sarah Bleasdale and Derek Rolfe are no longer on

the committee but we welcome our new committee

member, Diane White. Vivien Barrett, Robert Bleasdale,

Chris Brown, Mandy Oxlade and Jeanne Ware also remain

committee members.

Once again, Cllr Freda Roberts MBE was unanimously

voted to remain our President and Derek Rolfe was

welcomed as Vice-president.

The Mike Downey Memorial Cup for service to the club

was won by Jim Myatt and the Rose Bowl for personal

achievement went to Diane White. Congratulations to them

both.

Pictures and further news will be published in the next

newsletter, including details of who will be Welfare

Secretary and Sports Secretary for the coming 12 months.

Meanwhile, if anyone knows of a club member who is

unwell, please contact Roy or myself, so that a card can be

sent. Many thanks.

Lin Smith.
