Dear Parent/ Carer,

A warm welcome to the spring issue of our Newsletter

covering an action packed term, with so many highlights.

It is difficult to pick a specific highpoint, as every day at

Madani is a joy. As I write this however, two moments spring

to mind - the performance by the amazing LIA students at

the end of term awards assembly was simply unforgettable

and secondly, what was certainly the best World Book Day

we’ve ever had. From start to finish, the collective effort by

all staff across all teams, students (from Madani and LIA!),

parents and governors was amazing; the day really

encapsulated what Madani stands for.

On this theme of World Book day (WBD), it’s easy to immerse

ourselves in a bit of nostalgia on WBD and remember the

classics that we read growing up. The books, which

transported us into different worlds and adventures. WBD

proved that no one is ever too young, too old or too cool to

enjoy a journey with books and stories.

International Women’s Day (See also page 17)

IWD is always an important event in the year and

this year the Humanities department took the

opportunity to take part in the global call to action

to “press forward and progress gender parity.” This

included activities which examined how women’s

rights and the fight for equality have progressed

over time and how much progress we have

actually made towards gender parity today.

Guest speakers joined the Year 8 and 9 lessons to

help students explore important figures and events

in the past and present. Peter Barratt, the great-

grandson of Alice Hawkins, the leader of the

suffragettes in Leicester explained how women

from Leicester were involved in the national

campaigns to obtain the vote for women and Ms.

Mayat helped Year 8 students examine

inspirational female figures in Islam and in their own

families.

GCSE students explored what Islam teaches

regarding gender equality and how attitudes have

changed and how far British society has come

since women obtained the vote and of course how

far we still have yet to go to achieve gender parity.

On IWD itself, students across the department in

both schools shared their reflections in a display in

the reception area. It was wonderful to see the

impact of inspirational women, including those at

our school, have had on the lives of young people

in both schools. It was also great to see how many

students and staff wore the sashes supplied by Ms.

Khan. Students in her form presented explanations

of inspirational women of the present and the past

who have contributed to the process of working

towards gender parity.

Thank you to all who made the day a success!

Religious Education (See also page 15)

Year 9 students set up museum-like posts in the

library to show their learning about Rites of

Passage. The Rite of Passages work began as a

short term project to illustrate student

understanding of Abrahamic marriage rites in Islam,

Christianity and Judaism.

Each group of six students divided into pairs and

focused on the birth, marriage and death rites of

an agreed Abrahamic faith. The group was

expected to produce a book of the three main

monotheistic religions, telling the story of their

characters. They had to do so in a way that was

innovative, utilising an animation theme, thereby

challenging students to bridge contemporary

messages with traditional values.

Holly Smale Author Visit

We had such a treat for all our Geek Girl

aficionados on the 5th March when one of the

countries bestselling teenage fiction authors came

to our girl’s school. Holly is the author of the Geek

Girl series which we have had to buy many times

over due to its popularity.

The first book in the series, Geek Girl, received

favourable reviews and was the Number 1 debut

teen fiction book of 2013 in the UK. It won the 2014

Waterstones' Children's Book Prize in the young

adult category. It also received the 2014 Leeds

Book Award in the age’s 11–14 category and was

shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2013, the

Queen of Teen award 2014 and the Branford Boase

Award 2014. Holly told us that her series has sold

over 1.2 million copies and has been translated into

a number of other languages.

During her book signing; I don’t think we’d ever

seen such a long queue for autographs. A

terrifically enjoyable experience for our students.

Leicester Author Week

What a busy old day it was when we took a 100

pupils over to the Leicester Tigers stadium to visit

the Blue Peter Award winning author, Ali Sparkes.

Ali is currently writing her 43rd book and our

students received a free signed copy of her

latest book ‘Thunder Struck’.

Our pupils were chosen from the top 50 book

borrowers at the school so well done to those

deserved attendees.

Ali did a creative writing session towards the end of

the event and some of our students did some

fantastic pieces in the short time that they had (See

Isra & Ishrat’s 10 minute creative writing below!).

These will be up on display in the near future!

National SCIENCE and STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Maths) Week 2018

Madani Schools Federation celebrated the

National Science and STEM Weeks with an array

of talks, presentations, trips and activities related

to Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

STEM Talk - Cavendish Nuclear

Years 7 to 10 students at Madani Boys School

and Madani Girls School listened attentively to a

STEM talk by Engineer Nabeel Vohra from

Cavendish Nuclear. He spoke about work in

Islam, about his education and career, Islam

and STEM/ Engineering, gave some career

advice and answered some fantastic questions

posed by our students and staff. The talks were

truly inspirational and placed a large

importance on how and why we should all make

a positive contribution towards society.

STEM K’nex Workshops

Year 8 to 10 students at Madani Boys School,

During Design, Technology and Engineering

lessons received a short talk from Gary Lefman

(Software Engineer - Cisco), Chaz Chatha

(Project Manager - Cavendish Nuclear), Judith

Payne (STEM Manager- LEBC) and Jack Payne

(STEM Coordinator - LEBC). This was followed by

their participation in the STEM K’nex challenge

where they had to, in teams, build a tower out of

K’nex. It had to be at least 50cm tall, hold a

tennis ball at the top and have some sort of a

moving mechanism using a K’nex motor. Our

students demonstrated fantastic team work,

communication and created some of the best

towers our guests had ever seen at schools.

The session was part of an educational UK tour by ‘Solutions Not

to promote peace and better understanding of the principles of

conflict resolution around the world.

The programme is designed to prepare students to make a

positive, solutions-focused contribution to debates on Israel-

Palestine and other local, inter/ national contentious issues.

The Madani sessions commenced with our visiting peace activists

Nezar Aburas and Hagai Efrat with their powerful personal stories,

a series of presentations on different forms of conflict, followed by

group discussions and concluding with a Q&A with pupils.

The objectives for students were to:

• Explore their views and feelings about conflict and dispel any

stereotypes and prejudices that may exist between communities.

• Discuss events relating to local, national and international issues

in a safe environment and away from the often mistrustful realms

of social or selective media.

• Develop their social, moral, spiritual and cultural progress

It was our great pleasure to welcome Lt Cdr Hannah Mackenzie

and her team from the Royal Navy. The visit initiated by a close

friend of the Federation Ms Hajra Makda, builds on the close

partnership we have established across the armed forces.

The presentation about the Navy and teambuilding tasks were

focused on the year 7’s of both the Boys’ and Girls’ school. The

aim is to continue the endeavour across other year groups in the

future with a visit from the team at least once per academic term.

Furthermore, there is also a school trip to the National Maritime

Museum in Greenwich who recently had a “Muslims at Sea” event,

scheduled for the next academic year.

‘It was an absolute pleasure to visit the school, we had a great time with

your students who were impeccably behaved & really enthusiastic with all

of our activities. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality. I hope this is the

start of a fruitful partnership between our two organisations’.

Madani Girls Year 7

Fiction Study

We like to make a big deal of all things reading at our school and

it was definitely the case on Thursday 1st March.

This year marks 21 years of World Book Day and the aim was to

encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading

by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their

own and also to partake in our theme of celebrating Non-Fiction

and Fiction books alike.

All of our departments (teaching and support) were busy

preparing for the event this term from Mr Abdul Latif’s 1001 Muslim

Inventions competition, Creative Art’s 1001 textiles through the

ages, Miss Khan’s Rites of Passage competition to Miss Williams

Hunger Games Trials. These are to name but a few! We even had

our own World Book Day menu and Hot Dog stand created by Ms

Quarde and her wonderful catering team.

The school welcomed 240 primary school children from our sister

school LIA to take part in our exhibition and attend a very special

storytelling session by our in house bard; Mr Scott, captivating his

young and old audience in attendance. Our pupils and guests

enjoyed the curators table, learning about the many animals on

display and how they influenced some of our much loved fiction,

such as The Owl Service by Alan Garner and Fantastic Mr Fox by

Roald Dahl.

Lastly an enormous thank you to our Literacy Ambassadors,

ranging from year 9 to year 10. Our young creative minds made

this day a huge success. The buzz around the school was felt

throughout the day!

IWD 2018 Baking

For IWD, Year 10 students chose to raise awareness about what

the #MeToo campaign is all about. In order to advocate, they

adopted a variety of strategies including teaching a short lesson

about the topic, as well as demonstrating their enterprising skills via

making bookmarks. They have examined the past as well as the

present, looking at stories about Harvey Weinstein and President

Trump in order to pose meaningful questions about power,

corruption and the continued objectification of women.

The Humanities Department also ran a competition, in conjunction

with World Book Day, and challenged students to create a book

cover of any non-fiction woman from the past and present.

Students were allowed to enter in pairs, and work with any year

group member. Below are some examples of the amazing entries!

Well done to all those who entered. The winner will be voted on

via the whole school (staff and students) alike in an election.

Given the amazing role models we have in the world, it’s

important for young people to be told the stories of brave,

amazing women. Women all over the world; young and old.

Women who aren’t necessarily found on the curriculum.

It was a great pleasure to welcome

the Matt Hampson Foundation to the

school. The powerful life story on the

day was inspirational to students and

staff. It raised their awareness of

disabilities and most importantly

demonstrated that people with any

disabilities can lead a full and

rewarding life.

The message of 'focus on what you

can do, not what you can't' inspires

us to 'get busy living' and achieve

our goals, understanding other's

circumstances and helps us all to

recognise how diversity brings

different experiences which in turn

creates a more interesting and

tolerant world.

We are really looking forward to

working with the foundation again in

the near future, particularly

fundraising, which is what we do best

at the school! Thank you Matt

Hampson Foundation for the

wonderful presentation & insight.

At Madani, we believe that books are not only a channel for

our imaginations, but an essential component of education,

one of the keys to unlocking students’ potential and

eventually helping improve the quality of life. Reading is a

fundamental element for both a successful education, and

our ethos. I therefore take this opportunity to request your

support by reading, listening and encouraging more reading

at home of all books and most importantly the blessed

Quran.

The first revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be

Upon Him) from the Angel Gabriel was the command ‘Iqra’ -

Read! It was a command that was repeated three times and

it became the first word of the opening verse.

The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) also said:

"God, His angels and all those in Heavens and on Earth, even

ants in their hills and fish in the water, call down blessings on

those who instruct others in beneficial knowledge." - Al-

Tirmidhi.

Thank you/ shukran for your continued support this term and

for your part in helping us to make everyday a day of

reading for our students.

Yours sincerely | Wasalam

Vote Hanniya Kamran!

In her own words…

‘As a young person, I understand that we are often undermined; our

opinions swept aside and important decisions made on our behalf.

However, it is very important to realise that we have a voice and we

should not be afraid to use it!

This year I am standing for election because I strongly believe that it is

important for young people to be part of the picture in our society

today. In my last tenure in the YPC I participated in many campaigns

in order to do just that. These included and Anti Knife crime

campaign, conducting several youth surveys, helping to organise

conferences like the Don’t Hate Educate Conference and much

more.

By re-standing for Leicester’s Young People’s Council, I would like to

continue advocating for such issues and help my peers take hold of

their voice and use it to bring about a positive change.’

Leicester’s Young People Elections.

It’s time to think inside the box! Choose or lose!

Our very own Hanniya Kamran, stood for the Young People’s

Elections to represent area 1 and was successfully re-elected.

Voting took place between Monday 26th February and Friday

16th March 2018. At Madani, students were given the

opportunity to vote across both schools with the fantastic

support of the young people’s election team.
