ADEA represents and serves the dental education community. It leads the way in teaching and learning and promotes change, innovation, scholarship, and leadership. ADEA is proactive, anticipating and preparing for the future. It is always a few steps ahead of the curve, which is a good place to be. It seems to me that Orthodontists and Orthodontic educators have much to contribute to (and learn) and we welcome your input. If you have never gone to an ADEA meeting, you are missing out! You just don’t know what you don’t know. From my involvement with ADEA, I grew as a teacher and became cognizant of the larger world effecting and shaping education and healthcare policies. On a collective level, we (Orthodontists) may miss out if we are not sufficiently active. You can’t be served if you are not at the table. It is my hope that this newsletter will activate our large yet dormant membership. Hope to see you all at our next meeting in March 12-16, 2011 in San Diego California! Spring / Summer 2010 Volume I Issue 1 Dear Section Members:

Welcome to the first issue of our Orthodontic section’s newsletter!

Message from David Covell, Jr., Councilor (2005‐2011), ADEA SecOon on OrthodonOcs

ADEA and Orthodon-c Educators: Future Opportuni-es  Like faculty in other areas of dental educaLon, orthodonLc educators care about best pracLces for evaluaLng our teaching  in lecture and seminar seOngs, deciding how to manage selecLon of residents , and  learning more about the latest innovaLons that can  be applied in pre‐ and post‐doctoral orthodonLc educaLon. I have come to appreciate the variety and quality of presentaLons that are unique to ADEA meeLngs as well as how my interacLons with other aSendees have helped me view my role as an orthodonLst and educator from a fresh perspecLve.  Although the AAO Annual Session and other orthodonLc meeLngs are valuable resources for clinical informaLon, ADEA meeLngs have helped provide me the tools necessary to best address my non‐clinical responsibiliLes, ones that occupy much of my Lme on a daily basis.

ADEA’s organizaLonal structure is composed of 7 councils.  The Council of SecLons is composed of 36 secLons including the SecLon on OrthodonLcs and has over 1,700 members!  For the ADEA Annual Session, each secLon typically sponsors a presentaLon related to an overarching theme of the meeLng. Thus there may be one (or several) presentaLons on a topic of interest (such as teaching approaches or methods for evaluaLng students or faculty) that is sponsored by a council or secLon other than the SecLon on OrthodonLcs. Another  source of programming comes from members who have had submiSed proposals related to the theme of the meeLng. Overall, the breadth of opLons that evolves for each meeLng, as well as the depth of presentaLons, makes for a unique learning opportunity for educators.

ADEA meeLngs provide reassurance in knowing that others grapple with the same issues as we do.  Having this exposure can  minimize the need to “reinvent the wheel” when it comes to broader challenges in dental educaLon. For example, at the 2009 ADEA Annual Session (meeLng theme: “Assessment”) there were several presentaLons regarding the selecLon of post‐graduate students acer the NaLonal Dental  Board ExaminaLons become pass/fail.  We discussed the need for methods of assessing the competency of both pre‐ and post‐doctoral students to beSer manage changes we will all face in the future as our profession and methods of evaluaLon evolve. Our secLon’s Chair, Don Sanchez, did a great job helping organize our program and raising awareness on this important topic.

Many respected leaders within the AAO have emphasized the need for more support for orthodonLc educators.  ADEA provides a structured forum for us to facilitate these efforts and to capitalize on the wisdom of others outside our field. It would be great for orthodonLc educaLon as a whole to have more orthodonLc educators consistently aSend ADEA meeLngs. In addiLon to leadership development opportuniLes available through ADEA, members of the SecLon on OrthodonLcs would benefit  by helping develop our secLon’s programming.  Stronger parLcipaLon could also help aSract students and residents to educaLon careers (much of our SecLon’s membership is composed of students), by providing more one‐on‐one an opportuniLes for discussing why orthodonLc educators have selected their career path as well as job opportuniLes.

In short, ADEA meeLngs help nurture our global needs as educators! I encourage potenLal and current orthodonLc educators at all levels to give serious consideraLon to aSending the ADEA Annual Sessions and becoming more involved in the SecLon on OrthodonLcs.  Be on the lookout for our next newsleSer highlighLng  the 2011 ADEA Annual Session and ExhibiLon, March 12‐16, in San Diego, California.
