Quality of life is not just about material possessions, wealth, where one lives, or how many friends one has – it’s as muchor more to do with “feelings”. How do you “feel” about life? What makes you “feel” good in life? What is pleasant, or forthat matter unpleasant to you? What makes you happy? What makes you angry? That being the case then, go aboutdoing the things that make you “feel”, and obviously “feel”good. Better yet, get active and do the things that make you“feel” great! So, why not “feel” great and recreate with us?And guess what? We have made it easy for you by givingyou hundreds of ways to do so with a simple perusal of thefollowing pages of this issue (and I have to admit, I think ourbest issue yet!) of Parks & Recreation Magazine! Someenticing features include the following:

• User fees for our main-stay programs like admission toVeterans Memorial Park, our three summer-long recentlyre-accredited (with the American camp Association) daycamps and the 4th R Before & After School programremain at last years’ rate!

• We are offering another absolutely fabulous line up ofentertainment for the Rockville Bank Summer ConcertSeries, a complete schedule of which is shown on pages53 and 54!

• In addition to our standard specialty camps like Skyhawksand Lego, we have new supplemental opportunities thatinclude Volleyball Camp, Cheerleading Camp, Let’sGogh Art Camp, Performing Arts Summer Project, andWhiffle Ball Camp!

• For the very first time Veterans Memorial Park will openfor the 2011 swim season Memorial Day weekend! That’s right one entire week earlier! Please note that thepools will open at 12:00pm on the May 30th holiday aswe host the annual Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonyand as a result Pleasant Valley Road is closed for a signif-icant period of time that morning. We encourage you toconsider attending this commemorative event sponsoredby the South Windsor Patriotic Commission and con-ducted on the Eagle Patio appropriately landscaped forthe occasion by the Parks Division crew. Check pages31-38 for all the aquatics details.

• Brand new opportunities to stretch your comfort zone orexpand your horizons include “Wushu Martial Arts”(page 39), “Fencing” for youth and adults (page 41),“Introduction to Rowing” for high school age youth(page 41), “Women’s Self Defense Clinics” (page 45),“CPR & First Aid” Certification Classes (page 45), and“Morning Yoga” geared for mom’s with youngsters inour preschool classes (page 8).

• Two of my favorite pages, 47 and 48, are colorful andgraphically pleasing presentations truly highlighting somefun facts and ideas to make your 2011 spring and sum-mer most enjoyable!

• Looking for your park and recreation facilities? Thenrefer to the handy Map of all Town Parks & Grounds onPages 27 & 28 with associated key on page 29 to helpyou get there!

Congratulations go out to John Caldwell, Parks Super-intendent who successfully completed the CT RoadMasters public works leadership certificate program admin-istered by the T2 Center at UConn, culminating with a grad-uation ceremony on Oct, 28th at the Storrs campus!

The South Windsor Parks & Recreation Department PreschoolProgram offers families a variety of classes for children up to 5years old. These classes are offered throughout the traditionalschool year with four different seven-week sessions. The programoffers structure, play, and socialization while being flexible andaffordable. Many preschoolers have benefited from these classes, and many lifelong family friendships have been initiated at theclasses!

Many caregivers (Moms, Dads, Grandparents, and sitters) intro-duce their child(ren) to the program with a “parent/child class” inorder to acclimate their young ones with the comfort of a familiaradult nearby. It is not unusual to continue with this style class fora while, eventually “graduating” to independent classes as yourtoddler is ready for separation.

We offer both morning and afternoon classes which vary inlength. You may choose to sign your child up for back to backclasses, extending the fun, and allowing your family the flexibilityto use the program to suit your needs. The wide variety andaffordability of the program allows it to be your own personalizedpreschool program!

The goal of our staff is for you and your child to have a fun, pos-itive, learning environment with a smooth transition to independ-ence. We look forward to meeting you and your children. Stop bythe Community Center at 150 Nevers Rd. for our “Meet andGreet” on September 6th and enjoy some preschool activities, meet the teachers and see our facility! Reasons To Register Early: Our preschool classes are verypopular, and people know that in order to get a spot, they need toregister early. But there are also reasons to register early for class-es that don’t always fill up. Typically, a week before a programstarts that program must be cancelled if there aren’t enough peo-ple registered. Very often, people want to register for a programwhich had to be cancelled, and if they had registered earlier, theprogram would have run.

Many would dream of playing for a top-ranked collegiate football team, Tom is liv-ing it. When he is not working at Veteran’s Memorial Park, you can find him bysimply turning on the television. Tom is currently a senior at the University of NotreDame playing as a Safety for the Fighting Irish. Every game Tom gets geared upand hits the famous “Play like a Champion” sign as he runs through the tunnel ofNotre Dame Stadium. He describes playing with Coach Weiss as being a part of aprofessional business. The coach requires the players to maintain a strong mentalstate to excel on the field. Each week, Tom attends four days of practice, attendsmeetings with the coaches, and watches game films to prepare for each game.

Tom has been a Lifeguard at Veteran’s Memorial Park for the last six years. His nat-ural sense of awareness helps him perform at the pool and on the football field. Asa safety or a lifeguard, he cannot afford to only focus on what is in front of him.Being alert at all times, Tom is always aware of everything that happens around him. Most importantly, Tom effectively watches our swimmers in the water and on thepool deck.

We applaud and appreciate Tom’s skill set as a football player and as a lifeguard forVeteran’s Memorial Park!

The safety of your children is our 1st priority and it is our goal toprovide them with an optimal environment to learn the swimmingskills. Research shows that children can be distracted by their par-ents’ presence during swim lessons. For this reason, we ask thatparents please try to distance themselves from the class. As a gen-eral rule, please try to stay off the pool deck. There are multiplepicnic tables as well as grassy areas to sit. It can be distracting tonot only your own child, but also the other children in the class aswell as the instructor.

Swim lessons play a significant role at VMP. It is important to ourstaff that all children get the highest quality lessons we can offer. Asa result, the VMP staff holds the right to rope off sections of thepool specifically designated for swim lessons Monday -Friday.During those times patrons are to refrain from swimming in theseareas. This includes the diving boards. If there are swim lessons inthe diving area, patrons are not to use the boards at that time. Wethank you for your cooperation and understanding.
