magazine for Saintfield, Ballygowan & Darragh Cross. Winter’s almost over so it must be time for another Local Focus magazine! We publish twice a year - the Spring Summer issue in March and the Autumn Winter issue in September.

I hope you will keep and use this magazine until the next one pops through your letterbox. If you find it useful, please remember to tell advertisers where you saw their ad.

We’ve some great articles for you in this issue. With features on beauty, books, gardening, travel, technology, a recipe, and puzzles galore, there’s sure to be something for everyone. We’ve also got a great competition, courtesy of SRL Electrics - just turn to page 8 to find out how to enter.

SHOULD YOU SAVE OR SHOULD YOU INVEST?As the new tax year starts many people will want to make use of their new ISA allowance.Your options are a cash ISA (up to £5,760 for 2013/14), a stocks & shares ISA (up to £11,520), or a combination of both – so which should you choose?Opting for a cash ISA lets you keep some rainy day money handy, and you will get your capital back plus a small amount of interest. However interest rates for cash ISAs have fallen to new record lows. Recent research from the Bank of England shows that the average rate for a cash ISA including any guaranteed bonus stood at 1.85%, while the average rate for a cash ISA without any bonus was 0.88%.Inflation is currently 2.7% and has been above 2% for more than 3 years, so at these interest rates cash ISAs are actually guaranteed to lose money in real terms.Against this you could have invested in a moderate risk fund in a stocks & shares ISA, which on average returned 10.1% over the past year (IMA Mixed Investment 40%-85% shares sector). Obviously the returns are not guaranteed and we all know values go down as well as up, but the average return is still 24.3% over the past 5 years – a period which included the banking crisis in late 2008/early 2009.So when should you consider investing rather than keeping your money in cash? If you already have some savings in place to cover emergencies, and have cleared

any short-term debt (e.g. credit cards). If you are unlikely to need access to the money for at least 5 years – for example if

you want to build up some funds towards retirement, or university fees. If you can afford to put some money away every month – this can grow into a nice

lump sum surprisingly quickly. If you are prepared to take some level of risk with your money, bearing in mind the

alternative risk of losing money in real terms with cash.

Ballygowan Youth Club (or BallyG) as it’s now affectionately known by the young people is a relatively new club which opened on 28th April 2012. It was set up by a group of local parents – with absolutely no previous Youth Work experience beforehand - who were concerned about the increasing levels of anti-social behaviour in the village. As we come up to our first birthday we are amazed to look back and see how far we have come! And wow – what a year it has been.

On the opening night we had over 70 young people pop in. We now have a membership of approx 50 with an average attendance of 35 – 40, aged between 11 and 14.We are indebted to our local community for their help and assistance in getting us started! EVERY piece of equipment we had on opening night was donated by local people – TV’s and Games Consoles, Table tennis table, Pool tables, games, sports equipment etc.

That local support has never wavered with local businesses recently providing us with a brand new table tennis table, football table and wii console!

BallyG belongs to our Young People – they have worked hard to make it what it is. Earlier this year they had a bag pack in ASDA in Newtownards, raising almost £800 – this has helped to purchase some brand new equipment. They are still deciding what the rest should be spent on! If you are interested in coming along, we are open to any young person who is in P7 or above. We meet in the Village Hall in Ballygowan on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month between 7.30pm – 10pm.
