Shrove Tuesday

Royal Mail’s Christmas Stamp competition

Don’t forget to bring in your entry for the Christmas stamp competition by Tuesday 14th March… you never know your design might be the winner! Evie Brown in 5LR brought in her Dad's stamp collection to show the class, as we are all going to be designing a stamp for the Royal Mail Christmas stamp competition.

We enjoyed pancakes on Shrove Tuesday. We had a choice of toppings. What is your favourite?

World Book Day We had a great day celebrating World Book Day and everyone looked fantastic as their characters. Here are a couple of photographs but there are a lot more in the gallery on the website – http://www.wgsf.org.uk/wghs-junior/gallery Can you guess who we all are??

NSPCC Speak Out Stay Safe Campaign The NSPCC visited school and with the help of mascot Buddy gave an interactive assembly to girls in Mulberry House and St. John's House helping them to learn essential safeguarding information and empowering them to speak out and stay safe. Year 5 and Year 6 took part in workshops giving the girls the opportunity to discuss abuse in all its forms and recognise the signs of abuse. They learnt about how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse, how to get help, and the sources of help available to them, including the NSPCC ChildLine service.

Chess Club Girls have been competing in the UK Schools’ Chess Challenge which has been running on Mondays and Wednesdays this term. Winners will be announced next week in assembly. Girls accumulating 17 points or more will be invited to attend the Mega Finals against pupils from schools across the region. Well done to all who have taken part in the school competition so far.

L.A.M.D.A Verse and Prose The registers are now open for any girls who would like to take L.A.M.D.A Verse and Prose Lessons. The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (L.A.M.D.A) external examinations are a great way to improve individual presentation and performance skills and are a huge confidence booster. The exams are also fully accredited and students who progress to the higher grades are able to accrue valuable points towards UCAS University entry. The lessons are run by Mrs Lisa Druett-Arundale and are held in small groups once a week, usually at lunchtime or after school. They are open to girls in Year 2 and above. The exam itself is not compulsory, students can still benefit from the lessons without having to take the exam. Further information is available from the school office, or you can contact Mrs Druett-Arundale directly at [email protected].

Charity Cake Sale Madeline Bennett (5TP), Madison Ducker (5TP) and Addison Bruce (3JLB) organised a bun sale for Y3 and Y5 to raise money for Freddy's Cathouse, a registered charity which works to rescue cats. The buns were delicious and iced beautifully with a cat's face or paw prints. They sold quickly raising £153 for the charity. Very well done, girls!

West End Stars Isabelle Gaskell (6JB) and Millie Wood (6JS) performed in the West End at half term. They took part in different musical theatre numbers in the Charity Stage Box Gala at the Royal Court Theatre. They loved being in the spotlight in front of professional theatre artists from around the world and surprise celebrities as well as their proud families.

YEAR 3 Y3 are enjoying learning all about forces and magnets in our science lessons. Here we are investigating magnetic attraction and magnetic repulsion. We discovered that opposite poles attract.

YEAR 4 In 4SS we have been using thermometers to measure the temperature. The warm classroom was 23°C but it was a chilly 5°C in the playground. This was a difference of 18°C. In preparation for World Book Day, 4CG worked in small groups to create dramatic scenes from their class reading book - ‘The Diary of a Killer Cat’. They had to decide which part of their allocated chapter to work on and which characters would be needed: Tuffy, Ellie, Mum or Dad. The completed video will be watched during World Book Day.

4EB have been learning about India in Humanities. We found out that in July there is 8cm of rain in Bradford but more than 60cm in Mumbai! Eiliyah brought in some Indian leather shoes called ‘juries’ to show us. Other girls showed us their beautiful Indian dresses.

YEAR 5 In PSHE, we have been discussing our dreams and goals. Before we started, we calmed our minds with breathing exercises so that we were ready to learn. Many of us in 5LR want to represent Great Britain in the Olympics.

In Maths, we have been converting grams and kilograms, reading scales and weighing objects around the classroom.

We have also been reading scales to the nearest half division, converting from millilitres to litres and vice versa.

YEAR 6

In Maths, Year 6 have been collecting data (the number of catches in a minute) and finding the mean average and the range.

6AW have been fascinated to learn about the process of mummification in Ancient Egyptian times. We have written a set of instructions about how to make a mummy!

“I found the measuring activity very useful”. - Harriet Hough

“Using the coloured water made it so

much easier to see the scales”. - Olivia

Kelly

“It definitely helped me to understand capacity more”. - Eve

FRENCH

In French, we enjoyed learning about the Mardi Gras Carnival, celebrated in France. We also looked at a recipe to make crêpes and we designed a Carnival mask.

French challenge - Make some crêpes, using Leila's (French assistant) recipe, take a photo and send it to

Madame Roberts for some stars…. Photographs of the fantastic crêpes will be in the next newsletter.

Bon Anniversaire to the following girls.

MUSIC Hansel and Gretel

Last week the Under 11 Choir experienced a real treat! We were lucky to have Sohill and Katie from Opera North visit school and lead some music and drama workshops on the opera Hansel and Gretel. The workshops fully engaged the girls. During the two hours they covered all the main themes, scenes and many of the well-known tunes through improvisation, acting, composing (using their own instruments and percussion instruments) and creating alternative lyrics. The following day some of the girls went to Leeds Grand Theatre to watch the opera. The performance was a real treat and having participated in the workshop the previous day the girls knew what to look out for in this fully updated modern interpretation of the story. One of the main things that seemed to impress the girls was the fact that opera singers do not use microphones – the power of the voice! New Award We have introduced a Music Achievement Award to be presented to girls that have achieved above and beyond what would be expected for their age, on their musical instrument. Across the country the general standard that the average pupil, who practises regularly, could expect to achieve by the time they leave Year 6 is Grade 3. This award celebrates the achievements of girls who surpass this average and who have demonstrated dedication and hard work on their instrument by achieving Grade 4 or above before leaving the Junior School. We are delighted to be awarding this new award to Leina Tordoff who has achieved Grade 4 with Distinction on her violin at the end of her first term in Year 5. We were also delighted to hear that Leina was awarded second place and a Distinction for her performance of Haydn’s Clock Symphony at the prestigious Mrs Sunderland Music Festival. Well done, Leina! Class Concerts I am really looking forward to all the class concerts next week – please make sure your daughter remembers her music and instrument and does some extra practice over the weekend. Pre-exam Concert Following the success of last term’s concert we will be having another concert for any girl taking a music exam this term. It will take place at 1pm on Wednesday 15

th March. If your daughter has music lessons in school her teacher is

already aware of this concert and will complete the appropriate form. If your daughter has lessons outside school and is taking an exam this term please collect a form from Mrs White. This is to be completed by their teacher in order for her to take part in this event.

FOSJH Update

Thank you to all the girls who took part in our Talent Show last Friday, and to the parents who came to support them.

The night was a great success with a fantastic atmosphere. Particular thanks to Mr Ribeiro for being a brilliant host and to Mike Richards for the music, sound and lighting.

Friday 24th March is 'bags to school' day

Please bring any unwanted clothing/material items on this day. FOSJH would also be grateful for any used good condition school uniform that your child may have grown out of.

Our next other annual event is the Easter Egg and Cake sale in Mulberry House Hall after school

on Thursday 6th April. Once again we will have a café area for parents to sit and enjoy coffee and cake

whilst the children browse the Easter eggs and the cake sales. We hope you will come and support us.

We also have a very special family night on Saturday 13th May

Instead of our annual May Ball we are holding a Ceilidh for the whole family to enjoy, with food and entertainment. It will be fantastic fun for everyone - please save the date!

Regards

Rob Arnold (Chair) and Nicki Williams (Secretary)
