    Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course

    This course is the foundation for all the otherLearning and Leading courses. In this courseyou are encouraged to discover and employpersonal spiritual gifts as God intended.Participants are invited to consider theimportance of exercising servant leadership,developing future leaders, remaining rootedin their discipleship. The course offersguidelines for best practices as a churchleader and in mission and ministry in thecommunity and in daily life. Participantsmust obtain the book, Lay Servant

    (Developing Class Leaders

    This study explains what the recovery of thistradition can mean for congregations, andoffers some guidelines for the revitalizedoffice of class leader. Adapting the laterMethodist class meeting as a pastoral

    subdivision of the congregation, Watsonshows how class leaders, under thesupervision of the pastor, can nurture thediscipline of other church members in lightof a General Rule of Discipline derivedfrom the early Methodist societies: Towitness to Jesus Christ in the world, and tofollow his teachings through acts ofcompassion, justice, worship, and devotion,under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.Participants must obtain the book, ClassLeaders: Recovering a Tradition by David

    Many people may be confused as to what polityis. This class will help newcomers to the UnitedMethodist Church get their bearings. It will helplongtime members consider the specificstructural challenges that the church faces in the21st century. Participants must obtain or haveaccess to a copy of the 2012 United Methodistbook of Discipline. Any other book(s) will benoted when you are confirmed for the class.

    Prayer is something we learn; it is something thatcan be taught. For many, however, the onlyteaching about prayer they ever receive ismodeled in Sunday worship. As a church leader,you may find yourself the one leading prayer inworship services, as well as in other settings. It isvital then that you are knowledgeable and leadwell. This course may challenge some of yourassumptions, test some of your preconceivedideas, stretch your thinking and enrich yourprayer life. It will, at the very least, present you

    with an opportunity to grow in the discipline ofleading public prayer. Participants must obtainthe book Let the Whole Church Say Amen by
