Head Teachers Message Dear Parents/Carers What a busy fortnight we have all had, but I think we are well and truly settled in and working hard! I have been visiting all the classes this week and getting to know our new Reception children, as well as reading with the Year 1 and 2 classes. It is always a pleasure to be in class with well behaved and polite children who clearly want to learn and achieve. We have many rewards in school for good behaviour, (please see our website for our Behaviour Policy), including Robbie Rhino, Thumbs Up & Thumbs Down boards and our Kindness Tree. Please ask your children about all of these. Congratulations to Mrs Lakin and Miss Collins who both successfully passed their recent qualifications. All Springfield staff regularly undertake training to ensure we are all kept up to date with new initiatives and continue to provide the best quality education. Last week we had a successful fire drill practice and all the children, staff and visitors evacuated the school building in just over 2 minutes. We hold regular practices to ensure all children know exactly what they should do in an emergency and how to stay safe. For those families not in Hedgehogs class, I am hoping that you have now had time to meet and welcome our new Deputy Headteacher, Miss Natalie Ingham. Miss Ingham has joined us from a school in Crawley and is a very experienced Infant teacher who brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to continue to develop our fantastic school. Please stop and say hello either in the play- ground, or when in and around school, as she would love to get to meet you all. Finally, I am sure you will join me in saying goodbye and thank you to Mrs Kelly Morris who will be leaving Springfield today. Mrs Morris has worked in school for the last few years, as both a cleaner and a Mid Day Supervisor, and we wish her well for the future. Attendance

Use of School Toilets—Before & After School

There have been an increasing number of requests, for both children and adults, to use the school toilets before school starts/ finishes and after 3.15pm. The school only has staff, not public, toilets and due to site security and safe-guarding we are not able to allow individual adults on the premises unescorted. It is not always possible for staff to be available to escort the public to a toilet or, indeed, right that they should then have to wait outside the toilets. Can we ask parents to respect our position on this and refrain from asking the School Office to use the toilet facilities as we do not like to offend by refusing. Could parents also check their child has used the toilet before setting off for school, where on arrival in class they can use the toilet when needed. Thank you for your co-operation.

Junior Governors I would like to congratulate our new Springfield Junior Governors for being voted by their class to represent the school on our School Council. Their role is to be ambassadors for the school, as well as be the voice of the other children in Springfield. They are Sammy Facey, Ava Yeates, Jacob Oakes, Ava Smith, Bella Hughes, Leo Phillips and Maya Braybrook.

School Photo

Tempest, the School Photographer, was in school this week to take individual photos of the children. Hopefully all the children had their photo taken, including some with their siblings. We are expecting the proofs to be with us within the next few weeks so keep checking the book bags. These will be wonderful reminders of their time in Springfield.

Flu Vaccination I

The deadline for returning the Consent Form for your child to have the flu vaccination was Friday, 21 September. If your child’s Form was not returned in time there are a number of catch up sessions in the local area, and details will be provided by the Immunisation Service at Brighton General Hospital. This will also apply if your child is away on the day and misses their vaccination.

Second Hand Uniform Shop

Will be open again on Wednesday, 3rd October, 2.45pm, in the Oasis.

Swim for Springfield

Congratulations to Miss Wlliams who last Saturday, 22nd September, completed a swim down the River Arun to raise funds for Springfield School. On behalf of all the staff, parents and children I would like to thank her for her heroic efforts! Thank you also to all who went along to support her.

Culture and Diversity Awareness

Our friends from ‘Open the Book’ joined Year 1 and Year 2 for Assembly on Monday, 24th September, to perform a short play and talk to the children about caring and looking after one another. Open The Book is a team of volunteers from our local community who come into school once every half term to retell a Christian story through a short play. It is based on Christian values which link closely to our own school and curriculum values, for example, sharing and responsibilities, listening to others and being respectful. Through-out each academic year we aim to ensure all children get a balanced view of diverse cultures and beliefs, to help them learn about and understand a range of religions and opinions, and also have opportunities to discuss. As a school we celebrate diversity in society through understanding similarities and differences. Every year we have a representative from the Jewish society sharing stories about some of their traditions and festivals. As well as lessons in class, other examples have included assemblies on Diwali, Festival of Lights, Holi, as well as an Indian dancer who came in to demonstrate and explain the style of dance and aspects of her culture. We welcome speakers from all religions and cultures in to school to talk to us, especially those from within our local community. If for any religious reasons you wish your child not to be included in any of our events, activities or specific assemblies please make your child's teacher aware.

Scope Assembly

On Tuesday we were visited by Scope charity, who presented a short story play in Assembly and talked about their work for all the children to watch and listen.
