Overview + Goals 17 team members Two-manned sub for
increased performance Newest entry for
Springstead High School Participation from entire
team
Design Philosophy Maximum human power New drivetrain design
Hull Design + Fabrication Students laid out a full-scale
drawing of SubZero SubZero was designed to be
15ft long with a diameter of 24 inches.
The hull of SubZero was created from a male plug constructed of plywood.
Hull Design + Fabrication (Cont.) The plug was sanded,
covered with visquen and coated with mold release wax. Two half-hulls were laid up
using two layers of 12oz. Bi-axial cloth with one layer of matt in between.
The two halves were joined together.
Propulsion Design +Fabrication The team worked with a
local machinist to create a straight 6 to 1 gear drive.
One pilot would be on his/her stomach and the other pilot would be on their back.
Stainless steel pipe for driveshaft.
Propeller SubZero’s propeller was created from flat stainless steel
stock. It was heated red hot and forged into the shape dictated by the
Java Prop program. Additional strengthening and filling was done with tig welding. It was finished off with hand sanding and polishing.
Control Design SubZero has two vertical
and two horizontal control surfaces that are actuated by Teleflex cables.
Three stabilizing fins.
Life Support Design Each pilot wears a spare air
on his/her chest. Two 30 cu.ft. scuba tanks
are mounted fore and aft. The front tank is located
directly below the pilot. The rear tank is located on
the ceiling above the pilot.
Safety The bow is heavily
enforced. Pilots are visible at all times
with a fore window as well as an aft window.
Hatches float freely when released.
Foot straps are clearly visible with red cloth.
Strobe light provides a steady location.
Testing SubZero is tested in the
Gulf of Mexico as well as the Weeki Wachee River.
Dozens of testing hours has been logged. This revealed numerous
needed to be resolved.
Training The SubZero team certified
7 new divers. Team members train using
stationary bicycles, actual bicycles and running.
Each team member was trained in each support position.
