THE HOUSE OFBERNARDA ALBAWED 18 – SAT 28 FEB

by Federico García LorcaIn a new English version by David HareDirected by Andy Love

Lorca's finest play, The House of Bernarda Alba,is a tragic tale of frustration and explosivepassions in a household of women ruled by atyrannical mother.

‘Better never to lay eyes on a man, never to haveseen one. Ever since I was a child, I've beenfrightened: the look of men, yoking up the oxen, picking up sacks of wheat, calling to each other, their thick voices, their thick boots. Every time Ipassed, fear of their hands, of their touch. Godmade me weak and ugly. It's his way of keepingthem away.’

So pronounces one of the five unmarrieddaughters of Bernarda Alba before her eldersister, being the richest if least attractive of thebunch, is hastily betrothed.

Lorca was murdered by Franco's supporters on 18August 1936, just two months after he finishedthis masterpiece of love, oppression and loathing.

CAFÉ CABARET A GREAT GALLIC EVENING...

TUE 3 – WED 4 MAR

Maggi Stratford & Jack Glover bring you a rich journeythrough all things musically French, from Edith Piaf toJacques Brel, Bécaud, Prévert and beyond, viaaccordion, piano and voice, chansons and musettes, alittle jazz – and qui sait? Maybe a surprise on theway...Bon Appétit!

An evening exploring the fabulous world of FrenchChansons Populaires – songs with poetry for lyrics, telling stories that still move to laughter and tears...andwith music which evokes a time and place and yet stilltouches us and sometimes takes our breath away...

The songs have been passed through the generations, threads of lost love & requited love, passions andplayfulness, peopled with characters who have livedlives of hope despite everything. And somehow thesesongs, with such an identity of time & place, nonetheless crept over the channel, and somehow itdidn't matter that the language wasn't ours. Somehowthe poetry and the passion make the unfamiliar utterlyaccessible and transport us beyond what we think weknow, to what we do know...Bon Voyage!

FRI 1 – SAT 23 MAY

Written by Donald FreedDirected by Damian CrudenDesigned by Lydia Denno

It was not a question of monsters or men, Doctor. We were all - we are all monsters, who’ve been called human beings too soon.

Summer, 1960, a basement room in an Israeli police building.

Adolph Karl Eichmann, Nazi war criminal, deprived of his belt andshoelaces scurries around, frantic, manic, holding his trousers up asthey slip from his prematurely aged body, searching through piles ofdocuments and records in the holding cell.

Elaborate safeguards outside the door are unlocked, a middle-agedIsraeli psychologist enters the room and a gripping confrontationbegins.

Adolph Eichmann’s past has caught up with the present and now hisdestiny lies with the hangman. But did Eichmann have anyhumanity? Was he a “White Crow,” opposed to the “Final Solution”?After his role in the Holocaust can redemption ever be found for this“desk-bound murderer”?

A gripping, tension filled, drama from award-winning playwrightDonald Freed (Patient No.1) that is essential viewing in a worldwhere despite the lessons of the Holocaust, genocide and ethniccleansing still exist.
