SPRING CITY VETERANS MEMORIAL

By Courtney Syme The Spring City Veterans Memorial Association extends a heartfelt thank you to all who commemorated Veterans Day at our one-year-old monument on Monday, November 11. Members of the VFW presented a short program and students from Spring City Elementary School and community members attended. Students and staff at Spring City Elementary worked for a month writing and revising essays on the theme “What Veterans Day Means to Me.” The essays were touching and meaningful, and showed students are learning an appreciation for the United States and people who serve. Jane Stucki wrote the winning essay, and she read it at the ceremony. Runners up were Matea Straw and Annabelle Fryer. In the year since the monument dedication, many people have worked hard to improve landscaping with new sidewalks, gravel, and decorative rocks. Joe Bennion graciously donated the large oolite stones on the east side of the monument. Two additional benches will be installed on the east side this spring. Thank you all for helping create a beautiful memorial and monument to those who serve from Spring City. Just a note: Veterans Day does not have an apostrophe because it is a day for honoring all veterans. It does not “belong” to any veteran or multiple veterans. The difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day is that Veterans Day honors all of those who have served in war or peace—dead and alive—although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices. Memorial Day is a time to remember all those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds suffered in battle. Local veterans organizations will commemorate Memorial Day in the spring at the cemetery.

SANPETE PANTRY NEWS

There is only good news at the Sanpete Pantry! Its anticipated closure on November 1st created quite a response in the community. People of all walks contacted the pantry to see how they could help: volunteers, donations, and other offers to serve. There are still many challenges going forward, but we are thrilled to announce that Sanpete Pantry will not be closing its doors anytime soon! And Spring City's own Dave and Lurlynn Potter have assumed leadership of the organization. The Potters bring a wealth of enthusiasm, experience and knowledge, as they assume the role of Co-Directors of the Sanpete Pantry. In addition, a partnership with the Utah Food Bank has been forged and will bring valuable assistance. We can expect Spring City residents to become more involved in the work of this community organization, with Dave and Lurlynn at the helm. The Potters note the need for volunteers and funding. Watch for upcoming events and opportunities to provide assistance. You may call the Potters to see how you can help. Follow Sanpete Pantry on Facebook to get the latest updates. Making a Joyful Noise! By Randal B. Thatcher

The concentration of top-tier vocal talent in this little town of ours never ceases to amaze…

One of my neighbors is a world-class opera singer, who has performed spine-tingling tenor pieces in famous opera houses, cathedrals, and concert halls around the globe.

Another neighbor sang soprano for many years with The Tabernacle Choir.

Yet another neighbor is one of the featured soloists in a local production of Handel's MESSIAH every year.

And then there’s the rest of us: dreaming, perhaps, of such headlining performances, but rarely raising our voices in song outside of the shower.

And thus I am relegated to merely admiring these accomplished performers in our midst, knowing that I—with my limited vocal chops—could never pass a rigorous audition for any serious choir. Or, so I thought...

But then I discovered The Sanpete Valley Singers, and the dream was reborn!

Here was a choir with a tradition of performing a dozen challenging Christmas numbers each December, for audiences that include the inmates at Gunnison Prison, revelers at Temple Square, and local residents of Sanpete County; and led by an actual Doctor of Music (Dr. Roy Ellefsen). And, just like a professional choir, this one even appears decked-out in matching outfits. (Tuxedo shirt, with black bow-tie and cummerbund, for the men.)

And, best of all, there are no formal auditions. If you want to sing, you’re in.

Oh, the joy! A fond (if improbable) dream is about to be realized. After many weeks of rehearsals, I will soon be standing with the other tenors of this local choir, festooned in my newly purchased tuxedo shirt and bow-tie, and performing such Christmas classics as, Silent Night, Sleigh Ride, Do You Hear What I Hear, and Wexford Carol.

Having reconciled myself years ago to just singing congregational hymns on Sundays (where you don't really seem to worry about pianissimo or any other musical notations or dynamics), and having largely come to terms with my modest place in the musical firmament, I have found these past several weeks of rehearsal under the baton of Dr. Ellefsen nothing less than thrilling; and I'm looking eagerly (and a bit anxiously) forward to our upcoming Christmas concerts (including a local performance on Sunday, December 22nd, at 7:00pm, in the Mount Pleasant Stake Center).

And I’ll be there; striving to lighten hearts and spread some musical Christmas cheer.

Look for me. (I'll be the one in the tuxedo shirt and bow-tie.)

Merry Christmas!
