Welcome To SprintFor over a decade, Camden People’s Theatre has provided space, support and inspiration for new and innovative theatre makers, acting as a spring-board for many of today’s most exciting artists at the start of their careers. As the companies we’ve nurtured have grown, so have our ambitions; both for them and forourselves. At the heart of our work is a commitment to developing and presenting new work form emerging companies. The beating pulse of this heart is Sprint & Tonic.

Now in its 11th year Sprint has presented work by companies who have gone on to garner awards and international reputations. It was also my own introduction to CPT when I brought Ariadne here in 2004, and will always be an essential element of our work.

Over the last two years we’ve expanded the festival to one month and tried to present a broad cross section of work that we find exciting, exhilarating, daring, challenging and joyous. Some of this work I’ve seen on my travels around the country, and other pieces we chose on the basis of the idea. This year, thanks to funding from the Arts Council of England and Camden Council, we’re able to be more ambitious, and have expanded the festival to include two off site projects, including our first Sprintcommission Black Tonic by The Other Way Works.

Over these four weeks we hope you’ll join us to see the sun go down on midsummers night (Nightfall) experience miniatureecosystems created before your eyes (15 Storms In A Teacup), hear from a man who lived as cowboy (Finding My Inner Cowboy), experience a journey in a parked car (The Long & Winding Road), unravel a detective story in a hotel (Black Tonic) or...I could go on.

Some of the companies taking part you won’t have heard of, much of the work is brand new and being seen for the first time - so how are you supposed to know what it’ll be like? You can't. What we can offer you is something unique, surprising and completely of its time. These are new shows from emerging talents: your best chance to discover the leading artists of the future at the start of their careers. Take a risk with us; lead don’t follow - you might just be blown away.

15 Storms In A TeacupPeople In PiecesThur 5th & Fri 6th June, 8pm£8/£5

This is an attempt to capture weather in jar.

To make an experiment work.

To toy with the impossible.

And help you find your way out of the dark.

How could we get through a disaster.

How to survive.

The ForgottenBadac Theatre CompanyTues 3rd - Wed 4th June, 8pm£10/£8

By 1945 six million Jewish people had been destroyed by the NAZI policy of extermination.

The Forgotten is the story of one of those people.

An anonymous man, at the moment of his liberation, retells his nightmare journey to his watching saviours.

Beginning with the invasion of his city and endingin his imprisonment within the death camp at Auschwitz, he leads us through each stage of hisand his families humiliation, degradation andultimate destruction at the hands of the NAZI’s.

The Forgotten is an intense study of a process that was used to destroy millions of human beings.

This performance contains strong language andis not recommended for under 15 year olds.

“Arnolfini Arnolfini Associate Artists, Peoples in Pieces, make poetic work that contrast the

mundane with the quietly spectacular.

15 Storms in a Teacup was an intimate, hushed and shy performance that mixed

alchemy with anticipation. We enter their world of kitchen sink science and held our breath as low-tech chemical reactions take place before our eyes. The audience willed

the performers on, hopeful for the desired effect, which with a little patience gently

appeared before us.”Arnolfini

I take a large splinter of glass and hold it up to the light. As I slide it into the skin of my hand I feel something. Something akin to the first time. The first job. This will get me into their room, into their lives for at least long enough to shatter it.

The Other Way Works invites you to unravel this original detective story, where even love can be bought for the price of a cocktail from the mini-bar.

Check-in at Hotel Reception, and journey along corridors and into bedrooms to piece together the clues: a glass of expensive red wine; a housekeeper gripped with inquisitive mania; a hotel receipt from New York; a couple drunk on lust and jet-lag; a sliver of shattered glass; a sleek executive waiting to be caught; a single spot of blood.

Black Tonic is an interactive performance, incor-porating video, audio, and installations, as well as live performers.

Black Tonic is performed in the bedrooms and corridors of a Central London Hotel. Audience capacity is very limited and you will be advised on the location after booking. Suitable for ages 16+

Commissioned and Co-produced by CPT. Project development supported by Arts Council England, Birmingham City Council and The Sir Barry Jackson Trust.

The mementoes in the car are items that belonged to the artist's brother who died in an accident in Liverpool on 17 May 1998. The car tours to festivals until 2008 when Michael will drive the car into the River Mersey. Join him for a travel sweet and a car history. Commissioned by Fierce! Festival.

For my small audience I willlaunch a really big campaign. This one will be different from othercampaigns. This one will be the onewhere things really change! This onewill make us feel like different people.Or not even like people any more.Like birds, like trees, like the sea, like the mountains.

With some stuff she found in herbedroom, Lucy Foster will attempt toevoke the beautiful white world melting below our feet. She will try not to shoutat you, she will try to keep things merry, and hope that it doesn’t all comeflooding out.

In A Thousand PiecesThe Paper BirdsTues 17th - Wed 18th June, 8pm£10/£8

Suitcases, jig-saws, bus tickets andbuttons tell the physically and visually breathtaking tale of a young girl onher journey to England.

Like Russian dolls shedding skins; settings and worlds are packed and unpacked from battered and bruised suitcases by battered and bruised girls. Lives unfurl; carpets, lamps and washing lines unfold, magically taking audience’s to back streets, back seats and bedrooms.

Like a distorted kaleidoscope ‘In AThousand Pieces’ uses movement, words and live music to trace a touching and delicate depiction of a violent andisolated world that homes thousands of women forced into the sex industry.

Top of the World, Paperweight

Paperweight is the absurd story of two men trapped in mindless office jobs. As the pressures of work and the ever-present threat of the telephone ringing increase, chaos descends. An (almost) silent comedy ofescalating intensity and surprising tenderness.

Following successful showings at CPT in January, Top of The World are taking Paperweight to this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival where it can be seen at the Assembly Rooms from 1st-24th August.

For more details see: www.topoftheworld.org.uk

Unpacked, Jumping Mouse

Following the success of No Obvious Trauma and Funeral Games, Unpacked are developing their first productionfor children.

Unpacked take the audience on a magical bus journey with high-octane physicality, puppetry, live music and a transforming set built from parts of old London buses. It has their usual commitment to visual storytelling, whereall elements are used as richly as possible, combining humour with the darker truths of stories.

Pear-ShapedNathalie GuinamardFrom Wed 28th MayFree Exhibition

In this exhibition Nathalie Guinamard is showing a mixture of work made whilston a residency in Beijing and at home. Through both collage and installationshe explores the relationship betweeninterior and exterior space by a processof disrupting scale and architecture.

Working with images collected fromnewspapers, magazines and old interior design books, she is interested in howthese unaltered images can fit togetherto form something unique, and theirjuxtaposition provoke new connotations. She has always been interested inrepetition as a process of making workand the effect of a repeated elementwithin an image, and derives inspiration from observations of everyday culture, popular sayings, nursery rhymes and idioms.
