SPUR GEAR
KIFAYAT ULLAHCU-499-2012
GEAR Gears are toothed members which
transmit power / motion between two shafts by meshing without any slip. In any pair of gears, the smaller one is called pinion and the larger one is called gear immaterial of which is driving the other.
CLASSIFICATION OF GEARS
SPUR GEARS Spur gears have their teeth parallel to
the axis and are used for transmitting power between two parallel shafts. They are simple in construction, easy to manufacture and cost less. They have highest efficiency and excellent precision rating. They are used in high speed and high load application in all types of trains and a wide range of velocity ratios.
Gear and pinion Spur gear
MANUFACTURING OF SPUR GEAR Plastic, brass, steel, & aluminum are the
materials generally used for manufacturing Spur Gears.
SOME SPUR GEAR MATERIALS 17-4 PH Stainless Steel 303 Stainless Steel Aluminum Anodized Brass Cast Polyurethane
MANUFACTURING PROCESSES Gear hobbing Gear shaping Broaching
GEAR HOBBING Sequential cuts are made into the work
piece by the cutting tool Most widely used process for making
spur and helical gears Comparatively quick and inexpensive
but quite accurate Most of the gears of different types can
be produced with the help of this process
GEAR SHAPING Cutting tool itself is a gear Teeth are formed by meshing the cutting
tool and the blank together The cutter is generally made of ASP
2030 carbon graphite Spur gears, helical gears and internal
spline
BROACHING In broaching the cut is made in one pass
making it very efficient This process uses a toothed tool called a
broach. A broach has a series of progressive
cutting edges The tool itself is very expensive Spur gears, helical gears , Internal
spline, slots
APPLICATIONS Spur gears are used in many devices
that you can see all over, like the electric screwdriver, dancing monster, oscillating sprinkler, windup alarm clock, washing machine and clothes dryer.
A spur gear is one of the most important ways of transmitting a positive motion between two shafts lying parallel to each other.
