Tri-County Squares - A Bit of History

TRI-COUNTY SQUARES is a modern square dance club which was organized in Tillsonburg in 2005. When the Simcoe club closed down, local dancers recognized the need for a club in the immediate area. For the first few years, the club was cooperatively run under the leadership of the organizing committee Nick and Dorothy Dahm, Ken & Shirley Elbourne, Bob & Norma Loveys with the assistance of their chosen caller, Tom Charlton. In April 2007 they graduated their first group of 25 dancers in mainstream who were encouraged to take ownership of the club by participating in the new executive. This is now our tenth year of dancing in Tillsonburg and are planning to celebrate in September. Dancers range in age from 15 to 94. They currently dance weekly Wednesdays at basic and mainstream levels with occasional announced plus from September to April at the Tillsonburg Senior Centre, 45 Hardy Ave., Tillsonburg. Dancing visitors as well as spectators are welcomed at any time. The club gives back to the community by continuing the Trillium Benefit Dance originally coordinated by the Dahms at the Simcoe club each year in the spring as well as supporting the local Food Bank, the Salvation Army Toy Drive, and performing at community festivals, and nursing homes. The club is hosting the January 2015 SWOSDA dance at Courtland Community Centre. This will be their third district dance. They are hoping for a good weather and anticipating a good turnout. There are lots of good restaurants in the area. See the listings on the table at the dance but if you prefer bring a bag lunch

and join the group who choose to eat in and enjoy the social interaction that occurs over supper.

See you there, in a square. Nick and Dorothy Dahm for Tri-County Squares.

A Bright Idea ...

Please consider hosting a SWOSDA dance for the 2015 - 16 season. The cost is little and the reward great!

Duties of a host club are basically two fold: recommend a location, and provide the refreshments.

Hall costs and caller arrangements are covered by SWOSDA.

Without clubs who are stepping forward to host, these dances cannot occur. Smaller clubs might consider co-hosting with another club.

Contact Syd or Jane Fletcher at [email protected] OR

any member of the SWOSDA Executive if you are willing to host.

Remember When...Remember When...Remember When...Remember When...

“Any Flashback for January?” Dan OOPS! In the entire Christmas hubbub, I forgot. Oh well, I’ll just finish the research I had been doing on Christmas season celebrations around the area through the years and share what I found. As I’ve mentioned before, my research in the past Bugles and albums takes me a lot longer than I anticipate for a number of reasons – 1) some of our clubs are much better celebrators than reporters. I see mention of their upcoming Holly Ball, Snowflake Swirl, Panorama Dance, New Year’s Dance, etc, but little reporting of the actual activity. Again, I beg, PLEASE SHARE! For the sake of future historians. 2) I am easily sidetracked when I run across bits of articles like the one copied below and which I thought you might enjoy. From Bugle Sept. ’91 - excerpt from an article by Les Johnson. (Advance apologies to Neva for exposing your criminal past. DD) “….we received information (which is all true) that Caller, Neva McVittie had to appear before the Judge after serving a short period in Jail. The following is the transcript of the Court Hearing. Judge: His Honour Andrew Wilson, Owen Sound (formerly of Metro Toronto) Prosecutor: J. Barrie Doherty, Markdale (The Grey-Bruce Crime Stoppers called him out of retirement.) Defence: Lynda Thomas, Owen Sound – News Hound extraordinaire, CKNX TV, Wingham Location: Owen Sound Night Court (a local supermarket) Date: May 23, 1991 Charge: (Neva was escorted to the court by police and approached the bench at which point she greeted the prosecutor with a large YELLOW ROCK. It is quite apparent to the Judge and those present that Neva is trying to get some brownie points. However she upset the Judge, because he didn’t get one. The trial begins… Neva McVittie, You are charged with being a Martinet. You expect the participants of square dancing to carry out your orders without exception. HOW DO YOU PLEAD TO THIS CHARGE? Neva: Guilty as charged. However I wish to point that the prosecutor is a Member of SWOSDA and it might be a conflict of interest. Judge Wilson: Overruled. Mr. Prosecutor, please outline the circumstances of this charge. Prosecutor: Your Honour, I wish to point out the charge originates from the 17th century. Webster’s Dictionary defines a martinet as a strict disciplinarian (such as an army officer). There is no doubt that Martinet describes not only Neva but all square dance callers I have known. Her dancers try everything to please her, but she will have nothing to do with being pleased. When the dancers anticipate her next call, Neva will intentionally change the call, in order to make the entire squares break down in a state of mass confusion.

She directs the Bosses, Dishwashers and Lovers to promenade inside the square before their peers. Neva instructs them to outlandish configurations, such as: Relay the Deucey, Grand Square, Spin Change and Exchange the Gears as well as Triple Trade, Triple Scoot and Scootbacks. Then after they have done all those moves, she has the audacity to Recycle the dancers. If the dancers continue to make mistakes, the Martinet expects them to purchase square dance manuals and study and practice the tortuous moves contained therein before the next session. Again I must point out that, Neva McVittie is not all bad, she has been known to call and permit them to do an occasional Yellow Rock. Your Honour, that is the prosecution’s case and there is no doubt, this lady is guilty as charged and should be convicted. Judge Wilson: Miss Thomas, present your defence. Now Miss Thomas did her best with what she had to work with, but with the plea of Guilty and the Yellow Rock to the Prosecutor and the anger of the Judge – defence decided to ask for the mercy of the court and shed a few crocodile tears, praying the judge would be lenient. The Decision: The Judge invoked the stiffest penalty for the charge. The defence argued that Neva felt that what she did was in the best interest of her dancers and that she would present a demonstration of her skills. Because of this plea, the Judge set the fine at $150.00 and if she could not pay it - be returned to jail until she did. It was pointed out that the dancers had raised $230 and turned it over to the court. The demonstration turned out to be superb with the prosecutor and police getting involved. The Grey-Bruce Crime Stoppers extended their sincere appreciation to Neva and the square dancers for a job well done. NOTE: The Grey-Bruce Crime Stoppers held a Jail-A-Thon at a local supermarket on May 23 &24. Many of the area better known people were brought before the presiding magistrates during the two days. In excess of $23,000 was raised for the activity of the organization.” We’ll be pleased to hear about your special events involving SWOSDA and other clubs. Dorothy and Nick Dahm, SWOSDA historians

By the time you all read this Christmas will be over and you will be getting ready to celebrate bringing in the New Year. If you were all like us you had a great time at the Christmas Parties you attended. We had a super time down here including participating in a “Toys For Tots” event in Detroit. Now then, due to circumstances beyond my control you did not see the last Caller’s Corner in the Bugle. I hope that you all received my e-mail with updates to the January and March meeting Dates. We were unable to change the dates in order to accommodate Jeff Priest. The Church has their own functions on those dates. He has agreed however to do a Work Shop next season so that is good news. Here are the Dates again for the remainder of the meetings so that you can update your Diary :- January 11th 2015 March 8th 2015

We will, I am sure, have a good meeting and have some fun along the way. If you have something specific you would like to talk about or do, please let me know ahead of time so that I can put it on the Agenda. Do not forget that January will be the month for our Dues. Looking forward to seeing you all in the New Year. Do not forget to let your Dancers know that they are always welcome to come out to see what we get up to. At this time Joy and I would like to wish you all a Very Happy and Healthy New Year. Colin Aram Chairman , SWOSDA Caller’s Clinic.

“That’s Not My Job” (From Bugle Sept 1991)

There were four people named: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody.

There was an important job to be done and

Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.

Anybody could have done it, But Nobody did.

Somebody got angry about that Because it was Everybody’s job.

Everybody thought Anybody could do it, But Nobody realized

That Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody When Nobody did what Anybody could have.

Dear God, my prayer for 2015 is a FAT bank account and a THIN body.

Please don't mix it up like you did this year.

New Years Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

Read less. I want to gain weight. Put on at least 30 pounds. I will start buying lottery

tickets at a luckier store Stop exercising. Waste of time. Watch more TV. I've been missing

some good stuff. Watch less T.V. in standard definition Gain enough weight to get on The

Biggest Loser.

How Time Flies ... A new year begins, and one starts to think back, then wonders where the time has gone. In April 2009, the Bugle first appeared on the SWOSDA Web Site, and that's when I took on the position of Editor. Lee and Sharon Cox had previously done the job for 10 years, and decided it was time to retire.

With a new Editor, came a new way of doing things. The bugle went to the web; this was mostly a cost cutting requirement, with postage, paper and printing cost always on the rise. The Bugle would continue, and be available to all at no charge. By going to the web, we were able to handle colour photos making stories much more interesting, and add links for easy access to stories and dance flyers. We still have the same voice, only better. I want to thank the clubs and their representatives for keeping the Bugle current with what is happening in South Western Ontario. With your help I have been able to keep everyone informed as to what goes on at your club, what special dances are coming up, and it's a good place to share ideas. Speaking of ideas, if you have any new ideas for the Bugle, please let me know. I have had a few requests in the past, and have done my best to incorporate those. My aim is to create the best reading experience I can, for you! We hope everyone has an exciting new year ahead, with lots good health, much happiness, and plenty of dancing. Wishing You a Happy New Year from Centennial Beavers Centennial Beavers are having a great time each Friday night dancing to a nice variety of Mainstream and Plus Calls, as well as beautiful Phase II and III Round dances cued by Ed. With tummies full and happy hearts and lots of Warm Hugs and Best Wishes for a Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year we merrily left the hall.

With some very good weather so far this winter season we have not had to cancel dances except for just one. We appreciate all the dancers who come out faithfully and work with our novices to bring them up to the ability to dance Mainstream. Many thanks to Dan and Fran for their dedication to square dancing and Dan's patience in teaching not only the novices but us regular dancers who seem sometimes to forget what we are doing. Our Christmas Dance was held on December the 8th and we had a good turnout with lots of festively

dressed dancers and delicious treats. We have no dance on the December l5 thru to December 29th however we are holding our annual New Years Eve Dinner and Dance on December 31 at the Trillium St. United Church Hall. The doors will open at 6:30 and we ask that you bring your plates, cups and cutlery and whatever dish you signed up for. We will be waiting with a warm and friendly greeting and the cooked main meat dishes. After the clean up we will be dancing till we ring in the New Year at l0:30 pm (Newfoundland Midnight). We encourage all novice, mainstream, plus and round dancers to come out and kick up your heels, we are also providing a games room for those not able to dance as yet to be a part of all the festivities. Hoping to see you all there. The Club would like to express their sympathies for the recent loss of a long time member of the club, Laura Penny, who passed away a short time ago. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and for all the energy she supplied in organizing events and keeping the club running as Presidents for awhile. Our thoughts and prayers are with Art at this sad time. Our first dance back in 2015 will be on January 5. We wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe 2015. Hanover Happy Twirlers - Hanover The holiday season began well for the Hanover dancers. Our Christmas pot luck and final dance brought out almost all our members. We ate and danced with great enthusiasm, and enjoyed the company of a few extra family members as well.

Although some people will be going south for extended periods of time, the rest of us look forward to beginning the new year on the dance floor to whirl away the holiday excesses. The Happy Twirlers will begin dancing again Jan. 6, and we hope some of you will join us for our Western Night the following week, Jan. 13. We wish all our square dance friends a happy and healthy 2015, and hope to dance with you soon. Linda McCulloch, Bugle correspondent

Swinging Duo's - Strathroy

The Strathroy Swinging Duos completed the season on December 15th with a scrumptious potluck dinner. Dancers came dressed in various attire. From ugly Christmas sweaters to beautiful Christmas outfits, the hall was awash in a sea of red. As a gift to the club the evening of dancing was free and instead, an offering was taken up for the local food bank. President Jean Hamstra recognized and thanked Tom Charlton and Stan McKeen for calling and cueing as well as the social committee for organizing the evening. A good time was had by all.

On November 22nd the Duos hosted the monthly SWOSDA dance. Calling at that event was our own Tom Charlton as well as Colin Aram and Ed Dolson. Dan Roy did the cuing. When we realized that we would be sharing parking with the town’s Santa Claus parade we scrambled to change the format a bit and were able to accommodate all who attended. On behalf of the Swinging Duos we wish you a Happy New Year and we look forward to reconvening on January 5th .

Thames Valley Squares - Woodstock

2015 has arrived and we are looking forward to another active year of dance under the guidance of our caller Ed Dolson and his lovely wife Nancy. Although our club does not have a New Year’s Eve dance we did end the year with a lovely Christmas dinner and dance with great food, décor and laughter. Thank you “Buddy”, our little Elf, for helping Mrs. Claus deliver our Dutch treats this year. We will resume our dancing on Monday January 5th with Round Dance Teach at 6pm followed by Squares at 7pm until 9:30 as usual. REMINDER: January 12th is Hawaiian Night and we ask you to dress for the occasion. In other words get out those island shirts and grass skirts for a fun night – it might be winter on the calendar but we can be summer hot indoors. Light lunch to follow. Take a peak at our last theme night of the year “Canada Eh” night. We love to celebrate our Canadian Heritage and the décor is Maple Leafs galore along with wearing Red and White.

I have only one resolution.

To rediscover the difference between wants and needs.

May I have all I need and want all I have.

Happy New Year!

Tri-County Squares - Tillsonburg

Now that Tom has advanced to computer for his calling, he certainly provided us with evidence that his repertoire has expanded at our Rocking Good Time on the 26th. Then he followed it up with a rousing night of Christmas singing calls at our Annual Christmas Potluck and Dance where we collected toys and donations) for the Salvation Army Toy Drive. We were really pleased to have nearly all of our members out as well as a good group of visitors. We highlighted the benefits of square dancing that day as we had provided entertainment at a local nursing home in the afternoon, prior to our feast of good fun, great fun and fitness set to music that evening.

Thanks to Dave and Blanche for all their efforts to make it such a fun and enjoyable evening for everyone.

We continued dancing for the first two weeks in December and are now on a short break to enjoy the holidays with family and friends. Everyone is looking forward to getting back in January to dance off all the holiday treats that are being consumed. The Executive would ask all our members to think carefully about any contributions that they can make to the club in the New Year. We are still looking for 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents.
