~ VSDA Presidents Report

Hi All, Since last month the VSDA have put together some guidelines in rela­tion to the VSDA Face book page. These gu idelines can be found on the VSDA web site and we ask that you all have a look at these, so there can be no mis­take on how this will function from here on.

We have had the VSDA Aussie end of year dance and what a great night it was. Well attended by both dancers and non-dancers and who knows, they may just take up dancing. Well done to the organisers and all concerned for the effort they put in to bring this all together.

The VSDA will be having a demonstration at the Whittlesea Country Music Festival in Feb 2015 and we invite you all to come along. All the information is included in this issue of the SAV. Also plans are underway way for a large demonstration at Federation Square in the City in Feb and we ask for your help to make this a success. We will advise all the final details very soon.

We have had a number of inquires from people who were on the country cruise 5 and we might have some beginners real soon, so please make them welcome, as I know you all will and do with any new dancers.

Christmas is fast approaching and that means Christmas dances and break­ups. I hope you can get to a couple of clubs and help celebrate the festive season.

With the weather now getting warmer and some of you heading away for the break, I ask two things. Firstly, take extra care while driving and secondly, if travelling into rural areas, please be fire ready and if interested, you can down load free the fire ready app. from the CFA web site.

I would like to thank everyone involved in square dancing for their continued support of VSDA functions held during 2014 and I know this will be the same in 2015.

Karen and myself would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas with your family and friends and a safe and happy new year.

With only a couple of weeks till the early bird closes on the 31"t December it is now that time to get your Regis trations in. We would like to remind you all that we will only accept the correct completed signed registration form as there was a mix up with the one that was in cluded in the last SAV. You can down load the forms from

the VSDA web site or you can contact the registration officer or even see one of the convention committee . Also, if you are doing direct deposit into the bank, we ask that you include your membership number or your surname, so it will be easier to match the registration form with your payment. All our plans are now ready for the convention and the AGM for what will be a great weekend. To make it even better, has your club registered a dress set yet? If you would like to, a dress set form is also downloadable from the VSDA web site. Do you have something to sell and would like to book a stall? All the details regarding cost's etc are on the VSDA web site as well. If anyone, who is attending and would like to volunteer to be part of the First Aid team, please contact me. It was a strong field with 6 horses racing. James led out early whilst Di was caught in the stalls. In the end James came first on horse #2 (Dosido), Jeff second on horse #3 (Load The Boat) and third place was Ken Murray on horse #1 (U Turn Back). Our first Riviera Round-Up at Bairnsdale is over and by all accounts a great success. 150 dancers from Victoria, SA, NSW and ACT enjoyed a full week­end of interesting dancing to Brian Hotchkies. My thanks to all the dancers who came and filled the Boucher Hall at Bairnsdale Secondary College with the sounds and Sights of square dancing for the first time in many years. A special thankyou to all the Eastern 8's dancers who formed the team to make the dance go like a well-oiled machine, everyone worked and carried out their tasks admirably. Thank you also to dancers from other clubs who joined in the setting up and clean up. To Brian Hotchkies, as always a pleasure to work with and does a brilliant job making the dancing exciting. Thank you to visiting callers and cuers, who did a great job to make the Sunday session go with a bang. We are all looking forward to repeating the dose on the 4th weekend on Octo­ber 2015. Nancy and I couldn't be happier with the whole event.

Hello to all from Essendon. Well the time has come for the last report of the year and it has been an interesting year. We have all travelled fairly widely this year, to Shepparton for the State Convention and to Canberra for the Na­tional and to all the Club Birthdays and the other functions that have been held such as Golden Square's Christmas in July and the first Riviera Round-up in Bairnsdale. Most recently we have been to Mount Gambier for Pine City Twirlers Birthday, which was great success, so a big thank you to their committee and members for a first rate effort and a great weekend. Another thank you must go out also to the VSDA committee for the End of Year Aussie Dance, an excellent replacement for the annual Dinner Dance, a lot of work but well done. We all had a great time. Our last function for this year will be our Christmas Break-Up Party with Peter and Colin on 18th of December, and our first function for next year will be our Start Back Dance with Peter and Phillip on the 31st of January. The recent arrival of Brian Hotchkies rejuvenated our club numbers, as he pl ied his wares in his usual style to grateful dancers, but not as grateful as Young Matthew, who has received an early Xmas present winning the mem­bership prize. Speaking of big numbers; Don Moxey celebrated his eightieth birthday at the successful VSDA Aussie Dance and was in fine form with Gwen on the dance floor. At the end of the night Mike and Janice harmonised on stage assisting Howard, who nailed the final call before the dancers pleaded for an encore. At the 'Fashions on the Field' dance our energetic younger brigade of dancers acted as waiters, serving our elder racegoers with chicken and champagne. The Brown family have made a welcome return to the fold as did Emily, our own overseas import all the way from Sweden . The Magic of Xmas and Santa is not the presents, but in his presence. Catnap.

Our year seems to end quite suddenly when an election comes along to upset our plans (No Plus night now on 29 November). Report of Country Cruise No. 4 ____ ...........I

Sit right back and you hear a tale of a faithful ship that started from a fantas­tic port; Circular Quay, Sydney for a seven day cruise to the South Pacific Is­lands. They came by plane, car, train, bus and yes, even ferry to start a country mu­sic journey on the ship of light "The Rhapsody of the seas". For the last time, as she will not be returning to Australia next year. There were 2000 passengers from everywhere lining up to get on board, even passengers from Crossroads, Golden Squares, Actives 8 as well as others from interstate clubs and others. Once we all boarded and found our way to our cabins, it was muster time for the complete ship crew as well as all the passengers, to learn all about the evacuation plans and life boat drill and how to don a life vest, which is a seri­ous part of the cruise. The crew made it very interesting. Once this was completed it was up to pool deck for the sail away party and what a backdrop we had . The Sydney Opera house to one side and the Har­bour Bridge to our rear. The music was playing and with people line dancing and having the cocktail of the day, this was just unbelievable with everyone just having fun. As the sail away party started to subside, it was time to either take in dinner or go to the first headliner show, depending on what colour you were, as there were two shows each night which went for an hour and a half by the same art­ist's. First we had a Mr. Shane Nicholson from Brisbane to entertain us. Shane showed us his song writing expertise and was very entertaining. After dinner and the show we could take in bands such as "Simply Bushed" in the Centrum or see the "Willie and Roy show" in the "Shall we dance lounge", along with other bands playing all over the ship, so there was something for everyone to do if they wanted to.

Dancing at Southern Cross has been a lot of fun throughout the month. At plus we had our Spring Carnival Night, where there were lots of fascinators, non-alcoholic wine and chicken (even though the chicken was in biscuits). We had a horse race and the winning jockey, Coral, won by the length of the field. The jackpot continues to grow and if not won on the last night in November, then it will be a huge sum of money for our return in 2015 . At SCA we have had some great nights. We have been doing some workshops to enhance the fun and challenge. We would like to thank all of our dancers for their support throughout the year and look forward to 2015. Have a great Christmas and happy New Year.

We say many thanks to Graham for calling whilst Janet was away. Janet & Frank had a good trip to the USA, really enjoying the music and Sightseeing. Several of us got to Riviera Round-up an had a great weekend of dancing. Janet & Frank also got to Red barons Birthday weekend and enjoyed that. Both events are now on the calendar for next year for several of us, along with the NSW State Convention in May 2015. Some of our regulars are back but others still away, but we are still having lots of fun. We have welcomed Julie into the club, who got the Square Danc­ing bug on the Country Music cruise. Don't forget our Xmas breakup is on Sun 14th December - usual arrange­ments- bring a plate of finger food ( e.g. sandwiches) to share for lunch and something nice for afternoon tea.

The year is winding up with an abundance of activity . While a group of our dancers were away enjoying a great weekend of dancing in Bairnsdale with Brian Hotchkies, the ones at our regular dance ate cake for Graham's birth­day! Some stunning outfits presented at our dress up night for Cup Week with Jenny Wills, dressed as a jockey, winning the prize. Those of us that went to the VSDA End of Year Dance had a really fun night of dancing. Congratulations to the organizers and callers. Still to look forward to is our ten pin bowling night followed by a meal at the local restaurant plus our Christmas break up. DOONA'S TRAVELS (Continued) Last dances -3 local dances around LONDON I visited Black Arrows and Chalfont Grand Squares with Pau l and Hazel Bris­tow and Active 8's with Simon and Trudy Fielding . All were accessible by train, with a club member to take me from station to club . Someti mes, I stayed overnight with a dancer and sometimes caught the train home after the dance. The Bristows kindly helped with transport. Of course, I was warmly welcomed - By now, I was meeting some dancers for the second or third time. The UK square dance web site has details of heaps of UK dances and I contacted the callers ahead of time - to check times and holiday closures. Many clubs close in summer, like we do! Thank you for sharing my overseas dancing travels - and I wish you fun and joy wherever and whenever you dance. We have wonderful, exciting State and National conventions, club weekends and specia l events to dance together - all here in Victoria and Australia.

Another year bites the dust with this last report for 2014. Burra Cup dance was once again a fun filled evening with Alan Burns winning the cup. Winners of fashion on the field were Faye & Ken. We had a few visitors during the month, which is always nice to see. Alan & Jeanette are back from their trip to Bali, with Alan coming off second best when he decided to monkey around with a monkey and ended up in hospital, but fortunately all is well now. Our AGM saw the old committee re-elected with the exception of Alan Burns, volunteering to become President. The coming month will be very busy with all the Christmas breakup dances including our own. We were privileged to have Lois Cassidy from Mount Baker Singles Washing­ton State USA visit us recently whilst on holiday here in Australia. It was nice to meet her and we hope to see her again, it was also nice to have Ken and Mary visit the same night as well as our regular visitors. We went along to help Whitehorse celebrate their 62nd birthday, congratula­tions to Janice, Des and dancers. We had a very good night and so did Olivia, who scored the teddy bear that her grandpa won in the raffle. Another good day of dancing was enjoyed on cup day at Token Squares. Well, we have reached the end of another fun filled year. It is the time to re ­flect on our year and I am pleased to say we have had a great year at Cross­roads. Due to the support of a loyal band of dancers we have had some great nights, so a great big thank you to them. We have had a number of dancers on trips overseas or interstate, so we wish them all a great trip and hopefully, see them back on the dance floor soon. A number of us attended the VSDA End of Year Dance and enjoyed the new format. Our get-well wishes go to Heather after her little op. Letters to the editor Well the trad ition continues - with Brian Hotchkies continuing to spread his Brand of square dance moves to the delight of the 140 dancers, who went to Bairnsdale in October. Different venue, different committee, but t he same enthusiast ic dancers, who travelled to Bairnsda le for the Riviera week-end in October. Congratulations go to the Eastern Eights Square Dance Club, led by t heir Caller Max Hodder and Nancy. The atmosphere of the venue was warm and inviting. The Whittlesea Country Music Festival is Saturday 7th Feb 2015. We are looking for dancer participation. Come along and join in the fun at Whittlesea. 2017 Bendigo ational Convention -We have now filled all Committee positions with the addition of Neville Jarvis and Colin Collyer as Venue Managers and Christine Clifford as our Decorations Co-ordinator. The Committee now consists of: Mike Davey as Convenor, with l orra ine Davey (Secretary), Brenda Cockburn (Treasurer), Howard Cockburn and Janice Alexander (Program Managers), Coral Wegmann and Ella Whyte (Round Dance Coordinators), Ross and Wendy Maclean (Registrations), Mary Beerens (Publicity) and Tony Hooper (Board Liaison). If you are interested in assisting the National Committee in any way, please speak to one of the Committee.

VALE RON MENNIE Ron Mennie - Co-founder of the VSDA. and also the Program Manager for many State Conventions. He loved his square dancing and was always ready to tell a good story of days gone by. He was very encouraging to all dancers, whether they be round or square dancers. He will be missed by Callers and Dancers.

The RDAV held their AGM for 2014 in November and I am hon­oured to report that I have been re elected as President for 2015. Congratulations to Ella Whyte and Patricia Saunder in be­ing awarded Life Membership to the RDAV for their great service to the association over many years. The Christmas dance that followed, was well attended and a visit from Santa, albeit very early, was a highlight. Great dancing and

a lovely afternoon tea also made this a special occasion. Preparation for our next Social Round Dance is already underway. Please put Saturday 14th February 2015 in your diary. As it is officially Valentines Day, that will be our theme and there will be chocolates and sherries prior to an evening of dancing from 7.00pm onwards, at Pietro Rd Heatherton. Our 10th Spring Festival plans are taking shape and this promises to be a special event. Come along on the12th & 13th September 2015 to St An­thony's Parish Hall in Glenhuntly. I would like to wish all RDAV, VSDA and VCA members a very Merry Christ­mas. Have a great break and for those travelling take care. We look forward to seeing you all on the dance floor next year.
